Technical Publications Technical Publications, also known as Academic Publishing, is the literature produced in the subfield of publishing which distributes academic research and scholarship. The majority of such literature is then divided into specific industries, particularly (in the technological sector) the Aeronautical, Automotive, and Heavy Engineering industries. The term ‘Technical Publications’ in the broadest possible definition relates to published information of any type which is produced for the sole purpose to describe the handling, functionality and architecture of a certain product (ranging from a complex computer system to a child’s remote control car) which is either under development or actually in use. During the development of a product there is a number of document types which play a very significant role. These can be categorised into three subgroups: System Requirements (the guidelines dictating the required prerequisites of the software and hardware which are to be present on a computer); System Design (the process of defining the components, modules, interfaces, and data which are necessary to satisfy the product’s system requirements); and System Architecture (the conceptual model that defines the behaviour, structure and also the views of a system). The intended audience for Technical Publications is not only the (proficient) end user, but also the administrator or the service and maintenance technician. In comparison to the format of more typical ‘cook book’ style used by the majority of instruction manuals, the majority of Technical Publications are intended to provide the user with enough information so that they are able to understand the inner and outer dependencies of a certain product. This is the brief most commonly given to Technical Writers and Technical Translators who are employed to translate the very specialised and formalised documents of Technical Publications into an easy to read prose format which would be easily accessible to the highest number of potential readers. It is therefore more common practise that engineers, scientists and other professionals tend to produce a highly technical document and then employ a professional technical writer in order for them to proof read, edit and format the documents. This is often the case if a technical writer does not already fully comprehend the audience for their product and the best method through which to convey its purpose. The five phases of producing a Technical Publication are: Information Gathering and planning; Content Specification; Content Development and Implementation; Production of the actual document itself; Evaluation followed by publication.
