MORATILLA, PICARD-ARCENAULT WIN TEXAS10 KATY
AS 43 RUNNERS RAISE MORE THAN $40,000 FOR CHARITY
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (November 6, 2014) – There was no truth to the rumor
that Quebec City's Josee Picard-Arcenault brought the cool temperatures and brisk winds
with her from Canada to Sunday's second annual Texas10 Katy.
However, what she and Houston's Roberto Moratilla did bring was a bit of
international flavor - and racing experience -- to the Texas 10 Series with their decisive
overall wins Sunday at Katy’s Morton Ranch High School.
Moratilla, 36, who moved to the greater Houston area more than a year ago from
Spain, has quickly found himself at or near the top of each greater Houston area race he's
entered.
That is, until Sunday, when his winning 10-mile Texas10 Katy time of 53 minutes, 38
seconds was not only good for his first overall win in the States but also the fifth-best in the
Texas 10 Series' short 10-race history.
Picard-Arcenault, a 26-year-old physiotherapist from Quebec's capital city, meanwhile
produced the seventh best women's time in Texas 10 Series history with a near 10-minute
win in 1:03:26.
The duo not only earned $150 for their overall win, but they each also took home the
$75 prime for reaching the five-mile split first.
Katy residents Michael Manning, 34, and Ben Cohen, 29, were second and third
overall in 56:42 and 1:00:50, respectively, while Plano's Trudie Dugan, 45, and The
Woodlands' Hope Jimenez, 30, trailed Picard-Arcenault in 1:13:15 and 1:14:36.
Snook's Jose Garcia, 45, posted his second consecutive Masters win in 1:04:11 -- his
Texas 10 Series-personal best in five 2014 Texas 10 Series races while Dugan moved into the
top female Masters spot after finishing second to Sheila Natho last month at Texas10 Fort
Worth.
The Woodlands' Ken Rieger, 46, and Alvin's Heather Welsch, 12, defended their 5mile titles from last year's inaugural Texas10 Katy with winning times of 31:10 and 31:41,
respectively.
Rieger holds the Texas 10 Series companion 5-mile Series record of 30:33 while
Welsch's time was the best female five-mile time ever in Series history.
Forty-three (43) athletes not only competed in Sunday's Texas10 Katy presented by
Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, but also participated in the Texas 10
Charity Challenge, partnering with Reason2Race.com and raising $42,307 for eight different
charities.

Included was a $1,000 prize from Texas 10 Race Management to the charities of the
top five fundraisers.
Houston's Wanda Lewis earned $500 for Cherish Our Children International (COCI)
as the Charity Challenge's top fundraiser by raising $4,400 while Offshore Energy
Center benefited $200 as a result of Houston's Lynne Hackedorn's $3,150 of fundraising.
Christopher Olson and Crystal Cunniff each won $100 for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation after raising $3,051 and $2,995, respectively, while Shevela Hunter collected
the last $100 prize for COCI with her $2,415 fundraising efforts.
Just prior to the race, the singing of the National Anthem was performed by the
McMeans Junior High Choir from the Katy Independent School District under the direction of
Steve Kalke.
Sunday’s age group winners in the marquee 10-mile event earned a free entry to the
2015 Texas10 Katy and 12 points in the Series’ Armadillo Cup competition, which awards the
top three runners in 26 different age groups – 13 male and female – up to $14,300 in age
group prize money at the end of the Series.
All running clubs and training groups – for finishing all three races, including the 5miler and the Lil Texas Kid’s Race – earned points in the Series’ Ten-Gallon Club Cup
competition.
All organizations with finishers – including Spring’s Volte Endurance Training, the
Cypress Running Club, HARRA and Black Girls Run (groups with the most pre-registered
runners on Sunday) -- are competing for a $3,250 prize purse that will be divided among the
top five clubs.
During the awards ceremony, post-race cash drawings earned runners $1,350,
including ten (10) $100 bills for 10-mile finishers, five (5) $50 bills for 5-mile finishers and
one $100 bill for a finisher of the Lil Tex Kid's Race.
The Texas 10 Series wraps up its third year of existence at its founding location -Conroe -- on Sunday, December 7.
Online registration for all future events, including the first two races of 2015 -Texas10 College Station and Texas10 Boerne, results from past events and details of the
