From the Desk of Dr. Kasey Clowe: The American Academy of Family Physicians A 2009 graduate of St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine, Dr. Kasey Clowe joined the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) in the same year. He represents the incoming generation of medical professionals into AAFP, an organization founded in 1947. From its humble beginnings, the AAFP has grown to represent over 100,000 nurses, doctors, and students. The AAFP distinguishes itself from other medical groups such as the American Medical Association by reserving membership for family practitioners. While a specialist like a cardiologist or a nephrologist focuses narrowly on the heart or the kidney, a family doctor’s specialty is in the breadth of his or her medical responsibilities. Family doctors must care for individuals of varying ages, maintain awareness of conditions impacting each of the organ systems, and possess knowledge of a wide range of disorders. The AAFP provides the professional support these practitioners require. Its mission is to preserve the health of families by preserving the professional integrity of doctors. The continued enrollment of young physicians like Dr. Kasey Clowe demonstrates its strong reputation for doing so.
