EARTH DAY
Beach cleanup Saturday
Earth Day was first celebrated April 22, 1970. This day has been set aside each year to recognize our Earth and promote greater environmental awareness through education, action and celebration. To commemorate this day the Port Clinton Recreation Department and the OSS Solid Waste District will once again be providing the Port Clinton City Beach and Park Cleanup. The cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21. Volunteers are needed and are asked to report to the Lakeview Park Shelter House with gloves, rakes and lots of energy. Dress appropriately for the weather. The Cleanup began in the early 1990s when it was a part of the “Lake Erie Shoreline Sweep,” which was an annual spring effort to clean all of the beaches along the Lake Erie Shoreline. Those beaches included the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge/Crane Creek Beach, East Harbor State Park Beach and the Port Clinton City Beach. On average, close to 100 volunteers have collected approximately 3 tons of debris at the Lake Erie Shoreline Sweep event. Areas that will be cleaned this year during the event include the beach, Lakeview Park and Water Works Park area, an approximate 1-mile strip of our valued shoreline. Past volunteers have included scout groups, high school science and government classes, service organizations, members of the Friends of Lakeview Park committee and concerned citizens who simply wanted to make a difference. A pizza lunch is being planned for volunteers after the event. Gloves and bags will be provided. For information on the event, call Brad Schwan at the OSS Solid Waste District 419-734-6783 or Tracy Colston of the PC Recreation Department 419-734-5522, ext. 6.

Boat show coming up in Catawba

Most boats displayed in the water will be available for demos on the lake. Boat show visitors, will have unique opportunities to purchase some of Ben Richmond’s last works each day. Musician and island regular Steve Brownell will provide daily entertainment, including songs from his recent Nashville album “No Matter What.” Visitors will be able to sample some of the latest offerings from Sandusky’s Firelands Winery on Saturday. All proceeds from the tasting will be used to help fund scholarships given by the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association Educational Foundation. Free sailboat rides will be provided by Huron-based Harbor North. An antique boat display will be set up on land with a variety of vintage crafts from the North Coast Ohio Antique Boat Club. Admission is free and open to the public. The show runs from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, May 4; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Satruday, May 5; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. CIC is located at 4235 E. All activities are free to the public. Events begin at 10 a.m. with a Garlic Mustard Pull at the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, which is sponsored by the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy. “This service learning opportunity provides an opportunity for people of all ages to get involved, make a difference on the island, and learn skills that can help protect their own local ecosystems,” said Superintendent Blanca Stransky. Best Kept Secrets
The Leadership Class of 2012 is looking to shed light on Ottawa County’s best kept secrets — those little-known projects locals quietly undertake to help others. These volunteers donate their time or efforts for nothing more than the satisfaction of knowing they have made someone’s day a little brighter or their life a little easier. If you know of such a project, e-mail details to locclass2012@ gmail.com. For information on Leadership Ottawa County and an application for the class of 2013, visit www.leadershipottawacounty. com.

Sound Off
Here’s to All Volunteers
“Here’s to all volunteers, those dedicated people who believe in all work and no pay,” penned speechwriter Robert Orben. This National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, we at the Greater Toledo Area Chapter are celebrating our own dedicated volunteers and partners, the people who make the American Red Cross run. Our volunteers bring food, shelter, comfort and hope to hundreds of local families faced with rebuilding after fires, tornadoes and flooding each year. Volunteers provide services to members of the military, veterans and their families, including communications linking military members to their loved ones during an emergency. Red Cross volunteers teach first aid, CPR, swimming, babysitting and other health and safety courses. They staff community fairs to encourage their neighbors to learn these lifesaving skills and organize celebrations to recognize people who use their Red Cross training to save lives. If you’re looking to serve your community, become a Red Cross volunteer. Right now the Greater Toledo Area Chapter especially needs people who are interested in providing relief to individuals displaced by local and national disasters. To volunteer, contact us at 419-329-2900 or visit www.redcrosstoledo.org. Tim Yenrick, Executive Director American Red Cross — Greater Toledo Area Chapter

Sheriff’s Association
Many residents of Ottawa County have recently received, or will soon receive, a mailing from the Buckeye State Sheriff ’s Association. Ths mailing has my name attached to it and requests your becoming a member of the BSSA for the 2012 membership year. I would like to let the citizens of Ottawa County know that the Buckeye State Sheriff ’s Association is an organization that does a great deal for sheriffs within the state of Ohio, as well as all county sheriff ’s offices. BSSA offers sheriffs, deputies and civilian employees of sheriff ’s offices up-to-date training of many key law enforcement components that are crucial in our ability to perform our duties properly. It also offers constant updated information on changes within legislation,

legal updates, law enforcement issues within the state of Ohio and upcoming training available in other venues. Another key benefit to sheriffs and sheriff ’s office employees is that BSSA provides a lobbyist within the statehouse who fights for law enforcement rights, sheriff ’s office authority and laws to protect our citizens that keep our communities safe. I strongly endorse the Buckeye State Sheriff ’s Association and I am proud to be a member. However, this letter is not asking anyone to join, contribute or endorse BSSA. This letter is just being submitted to let each of you know that the letter from BSSA is not a scam and is a legitimate request. As with any questionable mailing, I invite all citizens to check with our office regarding the validity of the mailing. You may contact dispatch at 419-74-4404 or call my direct line at 419-734-6877. Congratulations to the six St. Joseph, Marblehead, students who made their Confirmation at noon Saturday, April 14, at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in Toledo with more than 100 other students. Samantha Puckett represented St. Joseph and her class by taking up the gifts during Mass. A special thank you goes to many other members involved in ushering, distributing Holy Communion and serving at the Cathedral. The students have been preparing the past two years by studying and doing service projects. Between them they have more than 120 hours of service to the Church and the community. Most recently, staff of Smile Express visited each classroom in Bataan Elementary to educate children on how to keep their teeth healthy, what food causes cavities and other dental education tips. The Friends of Port Clinton Parks has a new treasurer. Sharon Mefford, who has been performing that function for several years now, stepped down and turned over the checkbook to Dave Mehl. The group has several projects on its list for 2012, including replacing the wall and sidewalk around the Lakeview Park garden rebuilt by Masonry Construction and obtaining new picnic tables. Also, the City has a statue of a girl walking her dog which will be placed in the garden. Several small, concrete pads are also planned so that the trash containers don’t have to be put on the sidewalk. To complete these projects, they need to raise about $2,500. To help, send a check to Friends of Port Clinton Parks, 105 Hayes Ave., Port Clinton, OH

Detective Mark Meisler and patrolman and firearms expert Josh Smith from the Danbury Police Department recently came into Sue Hartman’s technology class in Danbury Middle School to help students better understand some of the information they had been learning in the forensic unit. The officers fingerprinted the students and discussed topics relating to fingerprinting. Meisler and Smith brought in some firearms and bullets to discuss ballistics and firearm safety. The first-hand knowledge and expertise the officers provided the students about police work and forensic topics allowed the students to make a connection between classroom activities and law enforcement careers.
