The Ottawa County Historical Society is pre-
senting a two day commemoration of the frst
battle on Ohio soil of the War of 1812. It will be
observed on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and
23, at the Wolcott Keeper’s House, 9999 E. Bay-
shore Road, Lakeside-Marblehead. The Keeper’s
House is the 1820’s stone home of the frst keeper
of the Marblehead Light, Benajah Wolcott, on
and around whose property this ‘Skirmish on the
Peninsula,’ as it came to be called, took place. The
activities will start with reveille at 7:30 a.m. on
Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and events will
continue throughout both days. The Keeper’s
House is 2 1/2 miles southwest of the Marblehead
Lighthouse on Bayshore Road.
Several dozen War of 1812 re-enactors will set
up camp on the Keeper’s House grounds Friday
afternoon, Sept. 21, and de-camp Sunday af-
ternoon, Sept. 23. They will demonstrate drills,
camp craft, and everyday history of the era. An
off-site location, 0.7 miles west of the Keeper’s
House at 9336 E. Bayshore Road, has been re-
served to hold three skirmish reenactments, at 10
a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, and at 1 p.m. on Sun-
day. Shuttle service, bleacher seating, portable
toilets, and traffc control will be provided for the
safety and comfort of participants and specta-
tors. Visitors will be encouraged to interact with
the re-enactors, to learn about both military and
daily camp life of the time.
A distinguished group of speakers will present
on the history of the event, the daily lives of the
early Ohioans, and the lives and gifts of the Na-
tive Americans whose territory was in play. Hu-
manities scholar Dr. Lorin Swinehart of Piqua,
an adjunct professor at Ashland University, is
a former ranger with the National Park service
and author of many books and articles on U.S.
and Native American topics. His talks at 9 a.m.
and noon on Saturday will feature stories of
the Skirmish based on a frst person account by
Joshua Giddings, who fought in the Skirmish as
a 16-year-old and recorded it in his journal. Gid-
dings later became a U.S. Representative and an
early abolitionist. Swinehart will explore native
American food, pharmaceuticals and medical
practices on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Genot Picor, a member of the Wyandot/Huron
Nation, also known as Winter Elk, will partici-
pate, sharing authentic music, story telling and
the perspective of the Native Americans of that
era. He will present Meet Etienne Brule at 11:30
a.m. on Saturday, and Talk with Tecumseh at 11
a.m. on Sunday. Brule is an interactive presenta-
tion about the Voyageurs who came early to the
Great Lakes. Wolf Thomas, a prominent First
Nations representative and PBS commentator,
will present the Keynote Address at 4:30 p.m.on
Saturday.
Representatives of the National Park Service,
Perry International Peace Memorial, will also
participate with talks and uniform and frearm
demonstrations, and will interact with visitors.
Local and state offcials and U.S. representative
Marcy Kaptur have been invited to participate in
a memorial service, wreath laying, and rededica-
tion at the Giddings Monument, Battlefeld Park,
just west of the Keeper’s House, at 2:p.m. on Sat-
urday. An experienced re-enactor will portray
Joshua Giddings at the memorial. In 1857, when
Giddings served as a U.S. Representative, he came
back and dedicated the monument to his fallen
comrades.
A military church service will be held at 10 a.m.
Sunday, according to the traditions of the fron-
tier.
Portable handicap accessible toilets will be
provided for sanitation and the comfort of par-
ticipants and visitors. Shuttle service will be pro-
vided between venues. The Port Clinton Rotary
food wagon will offer food for purchase Saturday
and Sunday, starting with breakfast.
The Skirmish on the Peninsula
Bi-Centennial event Sept. 22-23
Local donors contribute to the Skirmish commemoration
Local organizations are partnering to support the Ottawa County Historical Society’s Skirmish
on the Peninsula event.
The Marblehead Bank, in partnership with the Marblehead Lions Club, will provide bleachers
for the Skirmish reenactments. The First National Bank of Bellevue, Catawba Branch, is joining
with the Port Clinton Rotary to provide fsh and brat dinners from the Rotary food wagon. Ot-
tawa County Commissioner Jim Sass is providing straw for bedding at each re-enactor’s campsite,
and Dan’s Tree Service is providing seasoned hardwood for the camp fres. The OCHS was also
recently awarded grants by the Ohio Humanities Council and Thrivent Financial in support of
the event, the largest the Ottawa County Historical Society has undertaken.
In an historic event on Sept. 9 the
Perry Group, in conjunction with
the US Navy and US Coast Guard,
installed a commemorative marker
buoy at the site of the Battle of Lake
Erie, off Put-In-Bay.
The US Coast Guard Cutter Mo-
bile Bay lead the installation of the
historic commemorative marker
buoy, located at GPS Coordinates
41-44-50.00 N and 083-02-00.00 W.
Mobile Bay departed Put-In-
Bay at 9:30 AM on Sunday with a
cadre of guests for the actual site
of the Battle of Lake Erie. Upon ar-
rival, commemorative wreaths were
placed in the water, followed by the
deployment of the Buoy.
The deployment was originally
scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8, but
had to be rescheduled due to a gale
warning for Lake Erie. Other
events scheduled for Saturday
continued as planned, including a
christening of the buoy with guest
speakers from the British Royal
Navy, Canadian Consul General,
US Coast Guard and the Perry
Group, speeches at Perry’s Victory
and International Peace Memorial,
a reception and performance by the
Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
The Friends of Perry’s Victory
and International Peace Memorial,
also known as The Perry Group, is
a volunteer, 501c3 non-proft orga-
nization working with the National
Park Service and the local, national,
and international community to
commemorate the Battle of Lake
Erie and celebrate the long-lasting
peace between Britain, Canada and

Waterworks Park
After reading the current
article on Waterworks Park
in the Beacon I felt com-
pelled to write a note to all
concerned.
I feel this city can either
go forward or backward and
there is no status quo! Look
at the empty stores in down-
town and the condition of
the buildings. I have seen
similar size towns in mid-
Ohio that look much better
than our town. The build-
ings are occupied by many
businesses and the towns are
thriving. I realize it is very
diffcult to pay rent when
your customers are here less
than six months a year. The
businesses need to take ad-
vantage of those months -
especially the nights - since
summer is so feeting.
We desperately need new
business to attract future
residents and tourists to
Port Clinton on a year round
basis. This is where Water
Works parks is the answer to
this town’s problems. Delay-
ing making the decision to
go forward only hurts every-
one in town. Now is the time
to go forward!
I realize there is a very small
vocal faction that is against
anything new, and this will
always be the case, but what
about the silent majority?
My big question is: Why is
this group of council in favor
of tabling this ordinance? I
want to know their reasoning
and their plan. Please give
the people of Port Clinton
an answer. Why are you not
considering the referendum
that was approved fve years
ago? Yes, it is easier to table
the ordinance than to put up
with complaints from a few
but that does not help the
economy of this town or the
people who live here. People
want improvements, sew-
ers, streets, parks, more jobs,
but the budget for these and
other needs make them out
of reach for Port Clinton.
We need to go forward not
backward. Please reconsider
your decision to table the or-
dinance.
From the article I read in
the Beacon, our Mayor has
no opinion on this matter.
We need you, Mayor Leone,
to stand up on this issue and
not take a wait and see atti-
tude.
Fred & Dianne Pachasa
Port Clinton
Waterworks Park
In regards to Mr. Snider’s
email\letter to the editor in
this week’s Beacon there are
clarifcations that need to be
addressed, as follows:
First and foremost, I AM
NOT anti-development in
regards to the Water Works
Park property. However, to
beneft our City of Port Clin-
ton, the development HAS
TO BE one of sustainability
and longevity, for the next
generations; NOT TO PRO-
CEED with a “quick-fx”
mentality.
To correct the 2nd para-
graph of Mr. Snider’s email\
letter to the editor, it WAS
NOT any “delay tactics” of
the anti-development fringe
that resulted in the Puller
Group backing out of the
deal. They DID NOT (do)
the fnancials to undertake
the development they pro-
posed. They were led to be-
lieve for seven months that
they would be able to use
TIF monies in the construc-
tion of their proposed de-
velopment; TIF monies can
only be used in the process
of creating the infrastruc-
ture needed for proposed
development. This informa-
tion was brought forth sev-
eral times to Council and
Administration, as well as
other unqualifcations of the
Puller Group, but was chose
NOT to be acknowledged.
To correct paragraph 3, the
Planning and Development
Committe of PC Council
recommended to the full City
Council to add Ordinance
32-12 to the agenda, which
thus opens the proposed or-
dinance up for discussion,
and only then for discussion.
It was NOT recommended to
full council to pass said ordi-
nance, simply ONLY to add
it to the agenda.
To correct the 5th para-
graph, tabling the ordinance
IS NOT an attempt to put a
stop to the hopes of the de-
velopment of Water Works
Park. Also, it IS NOT a direct
confict of what the voters
requested during the refer-
endum vote nearly fve years
ago. The voting citizens of
Port Clinton ONLY voted to
change the property to Com-
mercial Zoning, and NOT
for a specifc type of devel-
opment. Tabling said ordi-
nance is for much needed
discussion, due diligence in
researching properly, to pro-
ceed diligently in the best
interest for ALL constituents.
To correct the 6th para-
graph, those of us on Coun-
cil who voted to table the
ordinance ARE NOT only
hearing from the anti-de-
velopment fringe. THAT
NEEDS TO BE MADE PER-
FECTLY CLEAR. To make
such a statement based on
complete fabrication of one’s
own mind, and without any
substantial facts to back such
an erroneous, blatantly bi-
ased statement, is a TRUE
DIS-SERVICE to ALL CON-
STITUENTS, by making
fabrications to fulfll certain
personal agendas.
To correct the 7th para-
graph, the leaders of Port
Clinton ARE WILLING to
take the necessary steps
needed to put Port Clinton
on the right path! The key-
words here are “NECESSARY
STEPS”. We must proceed
with due diligence, NOT
sloppily plowing through the
process like a bull in a china
shop.
Do the research; study
JMBM’s website: http://
www.jmbm.com/global-hos-
pitality-group.html and you
will see that this law frm/
consultant frm in Califor-
nia deals with developers of
Hotel/Hotel Resort proper-
ties. Their has NEVER been
a decision made of what type
of development has been de-
cided for Water Works Park,
something in JMBM’s own
words, “decision needs to
have been made on a type of
project”. That HAS NOT been
done, so to proceed with vot-
ing in an ordinance for the
Safety Service Director to go
into contract with JMBM at
this time with an up-to fee of
$25,000.00 is in disregard to
the proper steps in this pro-
cess, therefore in disregard to
the City of Port Clinton we
were elected to serve.
Back in May, I presented,
after doing much research,
the frm PPS, http://www.
pps.org/multi-use/ , WHO
GUIDES IN BONA-FIDE
MIXED-USE DEVELOP-
MENTS WITH USE OF
PUBLIC SPACE procedures,
with specifcs on making
waterfronts a vital mecha-
nism for communities. This
is a much more adequate
ft to this process, since the
purpose of any type of de-
velopment of Water Works
Park is to “...be the catalyst to
the economic engine for the
revitalization of downtown
Port Clinton...”
Why are we not follow-
ing proper steps and doing
our due-diligence for our
citizens who have elected us
to serve them?
Respectfully yours,
Randall G. Lipstraw,
Councilman 3rd Ward

The Ottawa County Task Force
on Aging conducted a county-wide
blitz at the end of August to distrib-
ute newly developed Senior Abuse
Protocol cards. Members of the Task
Force visited over 250 local businesses
and agencies in an effort to increase
awareness of and provide direction
if someone suspects abuse, neglect or
exploitation of someone in our com-
munity over the age of 60.
The Ottawa County Task Force on
Aging recommends the following Se-
nior Abuse Protocol:
For those in immediate danger, call
911.
For those with important questions
or concerns, call Adult Protective Ser-
vices, 419-898-3688 and dial 0.
For those inquiring about non-
emergency aid or services, call the
United Way, 211.
The Ottawa County Task Force on
Aging is a partnership dedicated to
building awareness of elder mistreat-
ment through education, advocacy
and community-based services. This
collaboration of agencies works to
solve problems and fnd practical
ways to respect the quality of life for
seniors in our community. The key
to helping our seniors and protecting
them is a coordinated community re-
sponse.
It is the responsibility of all citizens
of Ottawa County to recognize and
report elder abuse, neglect and exploi-
tation. If you are part of a business
or agency and feel your organization
would beneft from further education
regarding senior abuse, a speaker’s bu-
reau has been established and can be
scheduled through the Probate Court.
If you have questions or would like

Task Force, please contact the Ottawa
County Probate Court at 419-734-

Elder abuse awareness blitz
BY JOHN SCHAFFNER
Last spring it was announced that
Mary Heineman and her family had
donated the former Heineman Dis-
tribution Company building on West
Second Street in Port Clinton to be-
come the new location of the Portage
Resale Center. After some unexpected
delays, the work on that facility is
progressing nicely, although slightly
behind the original schedule.
According to Bob and Linda Sny-
der, the opening of the new facility is
about a month away. In the meantime,
they believe they are far enough along
with the renovation of the 10,000
square foot building to begin to set
some dates for operations. First, after
this Friday, Sept. 14, all donations for
the quality second hand store should
be delivered to the new location at
301 W. Second Street in Port Clinton,
about a block west of the Post Offce.
Second, they will continue to run
their operation at the east end of the
old Portage School on State Road un-
til the end of September. Finally, there
will likely be a delay between the clos-
ing of the Portage School facility and
the opening of the new facility of be-
tween one and two weeks.
“Things are starting to move now,
although we ran into some glitches in
the beginning that we didn’t expect,”
says developer and philanthropist
Bob Snyder. “I think we are now far
enough along to soon update the peo-
ple as to some specifc dates.”
The Portage Resale Center opened
about a year ago and was an instant
success. In addition to the Resale
Shop a new and improved Food Pan-
try will be located in the new facility.
Seed Faith Missions Food Pantry will
operate simultaneously with the Re-
sale Center, helping those in need in
Ottawa County.
According to Snyder, they are still
in need of volunteers to help with the
sorting of clothing and other items.
The purpose from the beginning is to
donate the surplus of funds generated
by the operation back to the commu-
nity in the form of donations to all the
areas non-proft agencies. Marie Ber-
ry, who started the operation as their
frst manager, will continue to serve as
the manager for both Portage Resale
Center and the Food Pantry.
Remember, drop off times for do-
nations are Monday, Wednesday and
Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please
consider donating some of your time
and talents to this community project.
The interior of the “Old Church” portion of the old Heinemann Distributing property on West Third
Street in Port Clinton is ready for fnishing work in preparation for the new Portage Resale Shop.

Carl Keller Field is the site of the
Sept. 16 meeting of the All-Ohio
Chapter of the Ninety Nines, Inter-
national Organization of Women Pi-
lots. Pilots and spouses, who are 49
½’s, will fy or drive to Port Clinton
airport for a meeting and later join
in the festivities of the Gypsum Re-
union. This is the 19th year the 99’s
have met in conjunction with the an-
nual Gypsum reunion.
Guest speaker this year is Judge Tom
Corogin, who will speak about his
trip in a sailboat below South Ameri-
ca. He was requested as a speaker by
members who had read of his trip in
their various local newspapers and
online.
Ninety Nines were named for 99
charter members. They formed in
1929 when all 117 licensed American
female pilots were invited to assemble
for mutual support and the advance-
ment of aviation. Amelia Earhart was
the frst president. International and
local chapters give scholarships to pi-
lots for furthering their aviation edu-
cation.
Chairman of the All-Ohio Chapter,
chartered in 1933, is Roberta Jones
of Columbus and Put-in-Bay. Other
chapters in Ohio are Lake Erie [1974],
Scioto Valley [1981], Greater Cincin-
nati [1986], and Women with Wings
[1993] in the Akron-Canton area.
For many years at different airports
the All-Ohio Chapter has held the
Buckeye Air Rally, open to men and
women. Chapters cooperate with the
FAA and other aviation organizations
to present safety seminars through-
out the year. Pinch-hitter courses are
designed to help a non-pilot land a
plane if the pilot has a medical emer-
gency.
99’s and other women pilots in the
area are invited to attend the social
time at 11 a.m., the program at noon
and meeting at 12:30. Many will view
progress of the ongoing restoration
of the Tin Goose [Ford Tri Motor]
being done by the local Experimen-
tal Aviation Association [EAA] at the
Aviation Museum.
Aviation activities for those fying to
Port Clinton were organized by Linda
Blodgett and Chris Creamer of Ash-
land. For further information about

Even those who did not grow up in Ohio
likely have family roots that extend into
the Buckeye State. The Hayes Presidential
Center offers a class specifcally designed
to help you fnd your Ohio ancestors.
Head Librarian Becky Hill is instructor for
Searching Your Ohio Roots. The class takes
place 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in
the Hayes Research Library and is spon-
sored by RootsMagic Inc. Cost is $10 for
adults and $5 for students through high
school. Pre-registration is required. Call
419-332-2081 or email [email protected]
to register.
Searching Your Ohio Roots zeroes in on
resources that are available for tracking
down family members who lived in Ohio.
These resources include vital records, land
records, and printed and online materials.
The class also touches on migration pat-
terns to the state. Hill also leads a tour of
the Hayes Research Library to familiarize
attendees with the locations of various re-
sources and how to use the library’s free-
access computers.
The Hayes Research Library houses one
of the area’s most comprehensive collec-
tions of genealogy resource materials.
Knowledgeable staff always is on hand
to help with questions and advice. The
Hayes Library offers genealogy classes on
a regular basis as a means of introducing
the public to its vast resources and the lat-
est innovations in the feld of genealogical
research. Library hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tuesday-Saturday.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential
Center is located at the corner of Hayes
and Buckland avenues, Fremont. The facil-
ity is affliated with the Ohio Historical So-
ciety. Check the Hayes Presidential Center
website for a complete list of year-round
special events.
Hayes helps genealogists
locate Ohio roots
Rutherford B. Hayes enjoyed trav-
eling. He was the frst United States
president to travel to the West Coast
while in offce. After his beloved wife
Lucy died, Hayes flled the void of her
loss with travels. His children and
grandchildren caught the travel-bug
as well, as evidenced by their numer-
ous steamer trunks and travel jour-
nals.
Inspired by this unique global ar-
chive within its collections, the Hayes
Presidential Center created Tales of
Travels from the President’s Attic. The
exhibit opens Tuesday, Sept.11, and
continues through Jan. 27, 2013 in
the Hayes Museum. It is made pos-
sible through the generosity of title
sponsor Croghan Colonial Bank.
Tales of Travels from the President’s
Attic takes a look at travel when it was
a luxury few people could afford and
when the risks were very real. Visi-
tors can see what early tourists – like
Rutherford and Lucy Hayes – saw
when they visited Yosemite National
Park in the late 1800s, what a 19
th
-
Century hunting party encountered
on the Great Plains, or the barely-ex-
plored lands of Alaska three decades
before it became a state.
A focal point of Tales of Travels from
the President’s Attic is dozens of travel
trunks left by the Hayes family in the
attic of President Hayes’ home. From
leather to wood, small to large, cam-
el-back to square, the trunks tell not
only the story of varied trips but also
the evolution of travel. Along with
these behemoth-sized precursors of
the suitcase, the exhibit showcases
travel photos, clothing, souvenirs and
journals dating from the late 19
th
to
mid-20
th
centuries. A video compo-
nent of the exhibit plays 20
th
Century
home movies of the Hayes family’s
travels to France and Scotland.
The Hayes Museum is open 9 a.m.-
5 p.m. Tues.-Sat. and noon-5 p.m.
Sunday. Admission is $7.50 per adult,
$6.50 per senior (age 60+), $3 per
child ages 6 through 12, and free for
children younger than six. For infor-
mation call 800-998-PRES or visit

be hosting the second Sheriff ’s Citizens
Partnership Academy.
According to Sheriff Levorchick, “The Cit-
izens Partnership Academy is a great oppor-
tunity for us to interact with the community

to share information with the public which
enables them to see what our duties consist
of. This is such a great way for us to partner
with our community.”
The Citizens Partnership Academy is a
free, 10-week program that will offer in-
formation on Patrol Operations, Victims’
Rights, Sex Crimes and more. The classes
will be held on Wednesday nights from 6 to
8:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 26. Included in
the program will be a tour of the Sheriff ’s
Offce facilities and interaction with the
various divisions and specialty units. Partic-
ipants will also be given an opportunity to
ride along with a Deputy. Graduates of the
program will get a certifcate of completion
at a ceremony on the last day of class.
Participants must be at least 21 years of
age, complete an application, pass a crimi-
nal background check, have no felonies or
violent misdemeanors and be in possession
of a valid Ohio Driver’s License.
“The Citizens Partnership Academy is
a great opportunity for the citizens of Ot-
tawa County to have positive contact with
law enforcement and to learn more about
the day-to-day operations of our offce,” ac-
cording to Capt. Brad York, who will oversee
the academy.
Applications may be picked up between
the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday
through Friday, in the Sheriff ’s Administra-
tive Lobby, or by emailing Capt. York at: by-
[email protected]. Applications

of the Academy.
All sessions will be held in the Emergency
Operations Center located at The Ottawa

What happens to an artist’s work when a
gallery closes? Sometimes they never see
their work again. However, most of the
time arrangements are made to return the
stored and unsold work to the artist.
“A little more than four years ago, a
painter friend invited us down to the sun-
ny south to see what their paradise looked
like, and to learn that palm trees are harder
to paint than those we are accustomed to
in the north,” according to Rick Dziak,
Marblehead artist and gallery owner. “We
would walk to the dunes and beaches and
side streets. Colors were defnitely differ-
ent, but wonderful to the painter’s eye.”
“We would paint every day, and although
we didn’t stay long, a sizable amount of
work was established. There were Art
Mart’s on the beach each Saturday, and we
would try to sell our works, wet and un-
framed, in most cases. It was fun! Many
times, as with wet paintings,
we didn’t want to haul them
back to Ohio. So they were
left at a gallery or put in
storage.”
Recently, a gallery that
had sold some of Dziak’s
paintings had to close its
doors. The friend who had
initiated the painting trip
brought back the paintings.
After assembling the re-
turned paintings, Dziak had
the idea to show the contrast of the south
coast paintings with paintings done on the
north coast. Most of the Gulf Coast paint-
ings are small, having been mostly done
en plein air, or on the spot. The northern
works are more varied in size.
It is with this background that the Dziak
Gallery is offering a show of new works.
The vast majority of the south coast paint-
ings have never been seen north of the
Mason-Dixon line, and will be shown
alongside Dziak’s recent works from in
and around the north coast.
The show will run from now until Dec.
16 at the Dziak Gallery. Hours are 1-4 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday and by appointment.
Dziak Gallery is located at 810 West Main
St. in Marblehead. For further informa-
tion, call 419-798-4994 or 419-494-4445,
email [email protected], or visit their website
at www.dziakgallery.com.

About type 1 diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every
organ system. It strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime. Type 1 diabetes is
an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone
that enables people to get energy from food. People with type 1 diabetes must take multiple
injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump just to survive.
Taking insulin does not cure any type of diabetes nor prevent the possibility of its devastating
effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack and stroke. There
are approximately three million Americans living with type 1 diabetes and more than 30,000
children and adults are diagnosed every year.

PCHS senior Sean Black
qualifes for National JTBA
Port Clinton High School senior Sean
Black traveled to Dayton and fnished
sixth in the Junior Tournament Bowlers
Association (JTBA).
Sean qualifed fourth out of 94 boys on
a Sport Compliant Lane Condition with
games of 186-178-230-210-249-203.
In the semi-fnals he rolled 186-188-
181 and fnished in sixth place, earning
$146.25 in scholarships. More impor-
tantly, Sean qualifed for the 2013 National
Junior Gold Tournament to be held in the
Detroit area. Over 1700 youth bowlers
compete for $250,000 in scholarships and
the opportunity to earn a position on Ju-
nior Team USA.
“Overall I am happy with the way I
was able to compete this weekend. I am
a little disappointed with not making the
step-ladder fnals after setting myself in a
good position after qualifying, but you can
never be upset with a top 10 fnish and it is
always nice to take home some scholarship
money. I am also glad to get the monkey
off my back in earning a junior gold entry
to compete at the national level with some
of the best players in the country next
summer.”

LEGAL AD/NOTIFICATION
National Grandparents Day was celebrated on Septem-
ber 9. If you’re a grandparent yourself, you already know
the pleasures of having grandchildren in your life. So you
may want to take this occasion to think of ways you can
help those grandchildren get the most out of their lives.
Perhaps the most valuable thing you could give to your
grandkids is the gift of education. Consider this: Over a
lifetime, college graduates earn, on average, about $1 mil-
lion more than those without a degree according to the
Census Bureau. So, putting money toward your grandchil-
dren’s college education is probably a pretty good invest-
ment.
Furthermore, your grandchildren may well need the
help, because college is expensive and costs continue to
rise. Consequently, you may want to contribute to a 529
plan. You have several options for how the money can be
invested and contribution limits are quite high. All with-
drawals are free from federal income taxes, provided the
money is used for qualifed college expenses. (Keep in
mind, though, that non-qualifed withdrawals will be tax-
able and possibly subject to penalties.) Plus, if you invest
in your own state’s 529 plan, your contributions may be
deductible on your state income taxes.
If you name one grandchild as a benefciary of a 529
plan and that grandchild decides not to go to college, you
can switch the account to another grandchild — in other
words, you maintain control of the money for the life of
the account.
Of course, despite its economic benefts, college is not for
everyone. So if you wanted to provide fnancial help to a
grandchild who seems likely to choose a different route in
life, what could you do?
One possibility is to set up a custodial account, often
known as an UGMA (Uniform Gift to Minors Act) or
UTMA (Uniform Transfer to Minors Act). You can fund
a custodial account with many different types of invest-
ments, but the use of the money is entirely up to your
grandchildren when they reach the age of termination in
whatever state in which they live. But if your reason for
funding a custodial account is simply to provide a gift,
then you might not be concerned with how the money is
used.
On the other hand, if you want to give your grandchil-
dren a fnancial gift with greater control, you may want to
speak to your attorney about your options. One possibility
is to set up an irrevocable trust. You can fund this trust
with either cash or securities and specify at the time the
trust is created when the funds can be used. So For exam-
ple, you can provide that the trust pay your grandchild a
certain amount of money at one age, with another install-
ment coming several years later. Keep in mind, though,
that trusts are complex instruments and may have tax con-
siderations, so in addition to consulting with an attorney,
you’ll want to discuss your plans with your tax advisor.
Whichever option is right for your family, use Grandpar-
ents Day as an opportunity to consider the ways in which
you can give something to the grandchildren who give so
much to you.
