This year’s Harvest Festival, Sept. 28-30 on Madison Street in Port Clinton, will have a Kid Zone. From Second Street south will be activities especially for kids, including a dunk tank on Saturday and Sunday; “Sit Means Sit” dog demonstrations Saturday at 12:30, 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 and 3 p.m:, a presentation by the Port Clinton Fire Department on Saturday; and Wendy on site throughout the days Saturday and Sunday. Over 50 crafters, a food court, beer tent and musical entertainment will be featured throughout the weekend. On Saturday morning from 8 to 11 a.m. there

will be a pancake breakfast served by Team Magruder, with proceeds benefitting the Oncology Department. Entertainment for the festival begins Friday evening at 7 p.m. with Classic Trendz playing oldies from the 50’s-70’s. On Saturday from 2-5 p.m. Rumours, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band, will entertain. Saturday evening will feature The Earthquakers, a crowd favorite. On Sunday, local DJ Hondo will provide the music. The opening ceremony will take place Friday at 5 p.m. and the festival will continue through 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Tuesday was a windy, gloomy day in Port Clinton, but not so much for the Friends of Port Clinton Parks, who received a very nice gift to continue their efforts to make improvements, particularly at Lakeview Park. The Beck Suppliers Inc., owners of the Friendship Stores throughout the area, presented a check for $6,500 to the group on Tuesday morning. Volunteer readers needed to help preschoolers
Ida Rupp Library is looking for volunteer readers. Reader training will take place on from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Oak Harbor Public Library. A volunteer reader plays an important role in increasing a child’s academic success and engagement in learning. That’s why the United Way, Ida Rupp Public Library, Ottawa County Family and Children First Council, Port Clinton News Herald and AmeriCorps have teamed to recruit 100 readers. We all benefit when kids succeed in school. Readers are needed from the Port Clinton area, Oak Harbor area, and Harris Elmore and Genoa areas to complete training and then read at area preschools. Camp for the Cure
Tall Timbers campground, Port Clinton, held Camp for the Cure Weekend activities on Sept. 11. Proceeds were donated to The American Cancer Society. The event was created and planned by Sally Durnwald, campground manager, and other campground residents who wanted to support and commemorate loved ones battling cancer or who had been lost to cancer. In the morning, kids and adults donated $5 each for a variety of crafts, decorating luminaria, “Camp for the Cure” tshirts and cancer ribbons to wear in memory of someone who had or has cancer. In the afternoon, beach activities, water balloon fights and Pink Bingo were enjoyed. Evening activities included a chicken barbecue, Road to Recovery golf cart and bike parade, kids camp, a live band and the movie “The Lorax”. The evening concluded with a Remembrance Walk and luminaria ceremony. Over $1500 was raised and donated to The American Cancer Society. Durnwald said that this has already been scheduled as an annual event at Tall Timbers, and is challenging other area campgrounds to join them by creating their own Camp for the Cure weekends next year. St. John’s confirmation students help fill the gap
There is a gap for those in need. “Snap Cards” are provided to those who are not able to purchase food and clothing on their own. They cannot, however, be used for many needed hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, body wash, deodorant, tooth brushes, tooth paste, razors, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap, dish soap, female hygiene products, diapers, wipes and baby formula. The confirmation students of St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, are collecting and purchasing these items to help fill the gap for those in need. From Sept. 22 to Oct. 21 the community is asked to participate in their Community Needs Project by donating as many as possible of the items listed above. There will be a drop box at the church located on Adams Street. For those unable to drop off their donations, call the church at 419.734.5548 and someone will arrange to pick up the donation.

He married Kathleen Mains on Feb. 26, 1946, and she preceded him in death on June 30, 1990. Mr. Twining was a self-employed painter/contractor and he also worked for the railroad out of the Marblehead Quarry. He was a United States Army veteran serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Surviving are his daughters: Cathy Twining of Marblehead and Micky Nielsen of Marblehead; son: Tim (Kathy) Twining of Ashtabula, OH; sisters: Mary Miller and Lilly Mae Dress, both of Marblehead; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Interment services will be held Sept. 24 at 10:30 am at Meadow Green Memorial Park, 2602 Bogart Rd., Huron, followed by a bereavement meal at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 541 S. Church Rd., Marblehead. Verta Voy Arnold
April 25, 1918-Sept. 17, 2012 Verta V. Arnold, 94, of Pittsford, Michigan, passed away on Monday, Sept. 17, at Country Living of Hillsdale. She was born April 25, 1918, in Fayette, Ohio, the daughter of Jesse and Alma (Beal) Double. She married Harley Arnold in Angola, Indiana, on Jan.12, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1985. Verta lived most of her life in Toledo and Port Clinton, and has resided in Pittsford for the last 15 years. She was a member

of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hillsdale. Surviving Verta are two daughters, Janet (Allen) Myers, of Sevierville, Tennessee, and Karen Hodos of Pittsford, Michigan; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, one daughter, Anita Louy, five sisters and four brothers. The Beacon Waterworks Park
We recently read a letter from Mike Snide which was in the Sept. 6 Beacon addressing the delay in entering an agreement with JMBM. As owners of a building and a business in Port Clinton, we urge you to look forward to a better future for Port Clinton. As we drive down Madison Street and see the empty shops and buildings, it saddens us as we remember a town differently. We know economic times have hit hard everywhere, but we have a unique little town here on the shores of Lake Erie and we could draw tourists from all over. We could have a bustling little town just like the towns on Lake Michigan, but we need a focal point in which to draw them. That focal point would be the creation of Waterworks Park. People just want a place to come in their boats with their families. We could be the family place by having a pool and small mini water park for toddlers, playground, mini golf, etc. Our little port could be the overflow from Put-in-Bay. The tourists love our little town, but wonder what direction we are heading as you look around. It is as though we don’t care and have given up. We all care about this town and want a better place for our children and grandchildren. We have to have a vision and we need help and advice from experts. I urge you (the mayor and members of council) to move forward with the development of Waterworks Park. That is what the voters requested in the referendum vote. Port Clinton deserves a second chance. It appears that those elected to City Council are once again divided on the Waterfront Development Programs. Need I remind you that businesses are closing and the economy is on a downhill slide. We had our chance once before and blew it. We had a developer who would have provided over 1000 new jobs and wages between $25 and $50 an hour. Dragging things out like we did before drove the developer away. This mistake was very costly and should never be repeated again. The only way you are going to find a developer who would bring year-round jobs and retail sales is to go out for proposals and qualifications like we did. There are several council members who are holding things back. (I hope you remember them at election time). Council and Mayor, how many economic development conferences have you attended this year? We went to Indiana to find ours. Look what the Huron Basin has done to spur business. We are mowing grass at $4000 per square foot. We need a marina, hotel convention center, etc., to compliment our downtown businesses. Do it in phases if you have to, but do something. Personally, I worked 18 years on this project and watched naysayers turn it away. Do not let this happen again if you love this city. If you do nothing, change will happen and it will not be pretty. Every year, since 2002, The Salvation Army-Port Clinton Service Unit has offered a school supply assistance program (Tools for School) in August. This year the program served 600 local students with school supplies and a new backpack. Since this program was completely funded by donations, the overwhelming success was due to our local residents, businesses and organizations that donated funds such as The Ottawa County Community Foundation Grant. From Oak Harbor to Mozambique
In August Ron Overmeyer of Oak Harbor, former Ohio State University Extension educator for Ottawa County, volunteered for a CNFA Farmer-to-Farmer Program to assist with agricultural development in Mozambique, Africa. Overmeyer’s assignment was to assist the Agricultural College of the Catholic University of Mozambique to perform a feasibility study for developing 750 acres of their land into a commercial farm operation. They want to accomplish three objectives with the farm, (1) operate the farm so that it generates income to support the farm operation, (2) serve as a model for commercialization of agriculture in Mozambique and (3) serve as a teaching and research facility for students and faculty. Mozambique is on the eastern side of Africa, bounded by South Africa to the south and the Indian Ocean to the east, is about twice the size of California and has 21 million people. The Faculty of Agriculture of the Catholic University of Mozambique is located in the town of Cuamba in Northern Mozambique. It took four days of flights and a seven-hour Land Rover ride to travel from Oak Harbor to Cuamba. Around 80 percent of Mozambique’s population is involved in subsistence agriculture. Most people grow just enough for their families and try to market any production that they do not use. There are 3.2 million small farmers producing 95% of the agricultural GNP. The annual per capita income is $885. Most of the corn and soybeans are raised without high quality seed, fertilizers or pesticides. The soybeans are mainly sold to large poultry producers and the corn is sold locally for making flour. About 100 acres of soybeans have been raised on the university farm during the last two years. The farm has averaged 18 bushels per acre without the use of fertilizer or chemicals. Probably another 200

As part of Coastweek”s International Coastal Clean-up Day, the Port Clinton Kiwanis group helped clean up Lakeview park and beach this past Saturday. Along with thousands of other volunteers from around the Great Lakes, nine Kiwanians armed with gloves and garbage bags picked up 10 bags of litter that would have eventually ended up in Lake Erie. “An event like this allows residents to take ownership of our local waterways. acres can be developed into farmland. The rest of the farm is composed of a mountain and a very stony area. The university also maintains cattle and goat herds on the farm. After 20 days of working closely with the university farm manager, Overmeyer developed a farm business plan. The immediate focus will be on perfecting the commercial farm cultural practices for the 100 developed acres, along with establishing markets for the farm production. Additional farm acreage will be developed after the cultural practices are perfected on the 100 acres. Email exchanges will be used to complete the additional farm business planning activities. On the return trip, Overmeyer traveled by train the 12 hours from Cuamba to Nampula, Mozambique. “The train was a great way to experience Mozambique,” according to Overmeyer. “We stopped at about a dozen villages along the way to pick up farm produce to be transported to Nampula. We also passed fantastic scenery of huge granite ridges, mountain ranges and mountain peaks just rising out of the flat landscape without any foothills.” “It was a tremendous cultural experience, along with the opportunity to share my agricultural expertise. I had many experiences with food, facilities and people that are much different than experiences in the United States. There are many wonderful people in Mozambique who want to improve their quality of life and appreciate the sharing of expertise by people from the United States.” The Farmer-to-Farm Program in southern Africa is implemented by CNFA. OVI checkpoint set for Sept. 21
On Sept. 21 the Ottawa County Sheriff ’s Office will come together with area law enforcement agencies and the Ohio State Highway Patrol in an effort to detect and apprehend impaired drivers with an OVI checkpoint. The checkpoint will be in conjunction with aggressive patrols during and after the checkpoint. It is the hope of all participating agencies that the public will choose to designate a sober driver if they intend on consuming alcohol. Judge Winters led discussion for symposium
The National Judicial College (NJC) announced that the Honorable Bruce Winters of the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court in Port Clinton served as a discussion leader for the Ohio Justice Leaders Symposium: Enhancing Court Efficiency through Emerging Addiction Science, Aug. 20-22 in Columbus. After attending this symposium, participants are able to describe the WINTERS extent of substance abuse in the justice system and relate it to the specific issues in their own jurisdiction, describe addiction as a brain disease that impacts behavior, identify the key elements of recovery and management in the community, and apply the science and evidence-based practices in judicial decision making throughout the entire criminal justice system. The symposium was also attended by some of Judge Winters’ colleagues, including Judy Flood, chief probation officer; Angie Plant, chemical dependency counselor; James VanEerten, court administrator; Erin Cain, defense attorney representative; and David Boldt, assistant prosecuting attorney. The training and travel was without cost to the county tax payers. The National Judicial College was founded in 1963 and is the nation’s leading provider of judicial education. The NJC and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges assisted the University of Nevada, Reno, in developing one of the nation’s first Master’s and Ph.D. in judicial studies programs. Both programs provide a formal academic setting in which trial judges can integrate technical and academic studies to attain an intellectual understanding of the American judiciary. The NJC is also home to the National Tribal Judicial Center and an International Program. The College’s curricula include a Seminar Series, made up of courses that provide judges the opportunity to study diverse and interesting topics at historically and culturally rich locations across the United States. Cheyenne Meek named to Scholastic All-American Swim Team
USA Swimming has announced the 2012 recipients of the Scholastic AllAmerican Swim Team award. Cheyenne Meek, junior at Port Clinton High School, was named to the 20112012 team. The award honors elite students that have excelled not only in the pool but also in the classroom. There are only 460 female swimmers in the U.S. that achieved a 4.0 GPA like Meek, and only 23 girls in Ohio that made the SAA cut. Cheyenne and MacKenzie Stewart, 2012 Port Clinton High School graduate who is continuing her education and swimming at Virginia Tech, gave PCHS two swimmers on the Team. This is an honor for the students, for PCHS coach Danny Diaz and for Port Clinton Schools.

Port Clinton City School District celebrated the opening of a new school building with the community on Sunday, Sept. 16, with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House. Danbury High School celebrates Homecoming
Danbury High School is celebrating Homecoming week. Monday was P.J. Day, Tuesday was Dress Like a Tourist Day, Wednesday was Costume Day, Thursday is Nerd Day and Friday is Blue and White Day. Kalinoski has played well for much of the season leading the Lakers to a 2-2 record and a 1-0 mark in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. With six games remaining, Danbury has a chance to establish themselves as one of the TAAC’s better teams. Becoming a mid-level team in the conference is the next step the Lakers must take as they attempt to become one of the league’s top teams. With a dynamic offense and a defense that is improving, it is certainly a possibility. It won’t be easy. Competing in a conference with the likes of Northwood, Ottawa Hills and Edon, three teams that qualified for the playoffs last season, the Lakers have their work cut out for them. But the team has made progress. Several years ago, there was talk that the football program would be done away with and now the team has won three games in back-toback seasons after experiencing no- and one-win seasons for several years. Kalinoski, along with fellow seniors Branden Bahnsen (WR/DB), David Gast (RB/LB) and Chance Mackel (WR/ DB), is hoping to turn around the program and believes that hope is fast approaching because of its popularity that is growing with the younger people. “We have a lot more kids that are coming out and playing football – coming out in the junior high games and pee wee,” Kalinoski said. “I just want to win games. I don’t care about the stats, I just want to go out with my seniors on a high note.”

Danbury improves to 2-2 with victory over Stritch
BY YANEEK SMITH Any good team responds from a devastating setback. After losing 56-0 to St. Mary CC last week, the Danbury Lakers stormed out to a 23-6 lead before defeating Cardinal Stritch, 26-18. Behind an incredible performance from Zach Kalinoski, who completed 12-of-18 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score, the Lakers won their conference opener. “We thought going in that we’d have a good chance against (Stritch),” Danbury head coach Bryan Dudash said of the game. “The kids came out fired up and we made some things happen early. They fought till the end. Late in the game, they dug deep, and they came through.” Lakers kicker Jim Dorko opened the scoring with a 23yard field goal and Danbury pushed the lead to 10-0 when Kalinoski connected on a 90-yard touchdown pass to Jim Chamberlain. The touchdown came off a double reverse that passed through the hands of two wide receivers before ending up in the hands of Kalinoski. Kalinoski scored on a one-yard run to push the lead to 16-0 before the Cardinals responded with a 25-yard touchdown run by running back Zach Denomy to cut the deficit to 16-6. Kalinoski later connected with Chamberlain for a second score on a 16-yard hitch-and-go route. Denomy, who finished with 31 carries for 194 yards, helped Stritch get back into the game by rushing for 33- and 11-yard touchdowns to make it 23-18. Another field goal by Dorko pushed the lead to 26-18 before the Lakers held off the Cardinals’ final rally. “We weren’t clicking offensively and they just kept pounding us with the run and we can’t make a lot of substitutions (because of our numbers),” Dudash said. “A holding call took a (Stritch) touchdown off the board and then we stopped them. It got a little tight and thank God I don’t have any hair or I would have pulled it all out.” Chamberlain finished with eight catches for 173 yards and two scores, Brandon Bahnsen had four receptions for 90 yards and running back Cody German rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries. This week, the Lakers host the Edon Bombers, who are 2-2 on the season. Last season, the Bombers advanced to the Div. VI Playoffs and defeated Danbury in the regular season, 64-34. This year, Edon has defeated Antwerp (396) and Edgerton (28-13), two schools that are a combined 0-8 and have lost to Hicksville (63-20) and Northwood (49-12), two quality teams. “They’re not as talented as they’ve been in the past years,” said Dudash, “but they’re still pretty good — they’ve still got some players that can do some damage. If we’re not careful, we could give up some points to them, (but) if we score 35 or 40 this year, we’ll win the game.”

Port Clinton falls to Genoa, drops to 1-2
BY YANEEK SMITH For the second week in a row, Port Clinton faced one of northwest Ohio’s best teams and suffered a tough loss, falling to the Genoa Comets, 49-7. Genoa dominated throughout, taking a 28-0 lead into the half and outscored the Redskins 21-7 in the second half before the game was called with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter because of lightning. Genoa’s All-Ohio running back Kyle Nutter ran 13 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns and broke the school’s all-time rushing record. Wide receiver Casey Gose also scored twice, once on a 30-yard reception and the other on an 85-yard kickoff return. Port Clinton’s lone touchdown came on a nine-yard run by quarterback Addison Rospert with 4:38 left in the third quarter. The score was set up after the ‘Skins recovered a fumble on a Genoa punt return. Rospert finished with 34 yards on 16 carries and running back Cody Smith led the team with 11 carries for 38 yards. Brock Moore contributed with three receptions for 13 yards as Port Clinton’s offense was held in check. Despite the tough loss, Port Clinton head coach Toby Hammond was able to take some positives away from the game. Last season, the ‘Skins defeated Edison, 20-6, but the Chargers appear to be much improved from last season. Hammond spoke of how his defense must defend the option. “You start with being very disciplined,” Hammond said. “You’ve got to be very assignment-oriented. You make sure someone’s got the dive and the quarterback and the pitch. If two guys jump one, then you leave one guy open. (Edison has) everyone back and they’re using some different formations this season.” For the ‘Skins, it is a chance for them to start the conference season off on the right foot after suffering two tough losses. “It’s probably more important for the kids to realize that (we’re starting the conference season off),” Hammond said. “I think it depends on your senior leadership. We’ve got a good senior class and for a lot of kids, this is their third year playing — the offensive line, Rospert, Smith and Chris Stokes.”

Oak Harbor trounces Margaretta in SBC opener, 42-20
BY YANEEK SMITH Behind a solid running attack and a defense that held Margaretta in check, Oak Harbor defeated the Polar Bears, 42-20, to improve to 3-1 and 1-0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Running back Mark Konieczny had another fine performance, running 29 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Rockets. Quarterback Austin Wiegand was magnificent, completing 10-of-12 passes for 141 yards and two scores. “Mark is our workhorse and will run as many times as we want him to,” Oak Harbor head coach Mike May said. “Austin was on target when we went to the passing game and he did a nice job of running our two-minute offense before the half to get us a few scores.” On the game’s third play from scrimmage Margaretta quarterback Tyler Hilton ran a naked bootleg and, after breaking two tackles, raced 69 yards down the sideline to put the Polar Bears up 6-0. Oak Harbor, however, responded, scoring 42 unanswered points, including 28 in the second quarter, to take control of the game. The Rockets dominated, gaining 22 first downs to Margaretta’s nine, outgained the Polar Bears in rushing yards (298-174) and total yards (439-250) and won the turnover battle 3-0. Oak Harbor’s first two scores came on drives that went the length of the field. Oak Harbor’s first drive covered 63 yards in 11 plays and culminated with Konieczny scoring from two yards out to take a 7-6 lead on Jourdan Maguire’s extra point. The offensive line was able to create holes for Konieczny, who carried the ball eight times for 53 yards on the drive. After forcing a punt, the Rockets proceeded to take it 80 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a one-yard run by Konieczny to make it 14-6. McGuire, who kicked the extra point, was 6-of-6 on PATs and is perfect in 22 attempts for the season. This week, the Rockets host cross-town rival Port Clinton. If Oak Harbor is to win, it will have to hold Redskins quarterback Addison Rospert in check, both on the ground and through the air. Last season, the Rockets defeated Port Clinton, 28-7. In 2010, Oak Harbor edged the ‘Skins, 10-7, in a hotly-contested affair.

person interested therein, and must be accompanied by a bid guaranty. The bid guaranty may be of two forms: 1. A Bid Guaranty and Contract Bond using the form in the Contract Documents. (The amount of the bid does NOT have to appear on this form.) 2. A certified check, cashier’s check, or letter of credit in favor of the Ottawa County Commissioners in the amount of 10% of the bid. required under the Ohio Revised Code, Section 5719.042 that the bidder was not charged with any delinquent personal property taxes in Ottawa County, Ohio. The successful bidder shall be required to pay not less than the minimum wage rates established by the Department of Industrial Relations. Each bidder shall complete a “Non-Collusion” Affidavit and include it with his proposal. Bids received after the scheduled bid opening date and time, or not accompanied by a satisfactory bid bond or check, will neither be read or considered. Bidders with unresolved Finding for Recovery on the State Auditor’s web site will be disqualified.
