Difference between a Counsellor and a Counselling Psychologist

There are some distinct differences between a Counsellor and a Counselling Psychologist that are related to training, methods and scope of practice. A Counsellor is able to help individuals and families deal with stress, family issues, depression, work problems or adjustment issues. They can provide a listening ear and support, and use a limited number of therapy approaches to help their clients. They do not require any academic qualifications but usually train for at least 6 months before practicing. Counsellors are not supposed to give any advice but are there to guide you to your own conclusions. Their main role is to listen. A Counselling Psychologist will provide counselling intervention using the latest research and approaches that are specifically tailored to each individual. We may use cognitive behaviour therapy, behavioural treatment, or other forms of psychotherapy. We may also use specialised assessments to identify what is the best approach for you and, in some cases, where the exact problems lie if you are unsure. We can help with a broad range of difficulties including depression, anxiety, marital difficulties, social anxiety, phobias, bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorder. Counselling Psychologists usually undertake 6-7 years of university and post university training, continually update their qualifications and are always subject to some form of supervision. Counselling Psychologists have strict codes of ethical guidelines from the British Psychological Society and from any other bodies to which they belong.
