The Dwelling Place
of New York

By Paul Lostritto

As a Franciscan friar, Paul Lostritto works with a number of
outreach organizations across Manhattan. In addition to
his service as parish priest of St. Francis of Assisi Church,
Paul Lostritto sits on the board of directors for The
Dwelling Place in midtown.
Founded by the Allegheny Franciscan Sisters, The
Dwelling Place of New York serves as a transitional
residence for women. It has offered shelter and food since
1977, and thousands of formerly homeless women have
found the support and care they needed to rebuild their
lives. The shelter houses 15 women at a time, each of
whom receives individual guidance and a space of her
own.
When a woman arrives at The Dwelling Place, she
receives a comprehensive mental and physical health
check. She continues to receive assessments twice each
month from the Project Renewal Outreach Team, and
referrals for counseling are available. Residents also

receive money-management and medication-management
education as well as continuing respectful support as they
work toward independence.
