The ESL Game of Life: A Simulation
Scenario: Students are interested in learning how education levels and life
choices impact earnings and an individual’s standard of living. Students will
apply decision-making, problem-solving, and management processes to develop
a budget spending plan! to meet established goals. "he goal is to develop the
knowledge and skills needed to use these processes in real-life situations. "his
pro#ect is a real-world simulation rooted in each student’s personal goals. "his
simulation should be carried out over several classes, devoting appro$imately %&
minutes of each class to the activities. "he first and last days of the simulation
will take the most amount of time. "he pro#ect may be simplified for lower level
classrooms.
Objectives:
1. 'dentify individual lifestyle needs and wants
(. 'dentify possible educational and career choice with corresponding
income.
3. )repare a personal budget for an adult age 3(! to demonstrate
understanding of the material, human, and financial resources need to
accomplish goals.
%. *ake decisions+ solve problems.
&. ,pply basic mathematical operations to solve problems in oral or written
forms.
-. .rite checks properly.
/. 0valuate personal spending choices.
Activities and Procedures:
Pre-Activity: Setting the Lesson
"he 0S1 2ame of 1ife can be introduced to the students by asking the following
3uestions4
1. 5ow does an adult make decisions when making a budget6
(. .hat is the relationship between education and employment6 5ow does
that relationship affect the 3uality of our lives6
10%
't may be useful to pre-teach some lessons on the topics of credit, savings, check
writing, money management principles, consumerism, the social service system,
ta$ation, and the decision making process. "he more information that students
have in advance, the more smoothly the simulation will run.
To begin the simulation:
1. Students will assume a new identity and will then complete a 78onsider
*y 9uture: form, basing their identity on a 3(-year-old adult. "hey will
determine lifestyle choices concerning marital status, family composition,
housing, transportation, and education. "he teacher will keep the
completed forms to use later so that students do not change the
information. Some students may wish to make serious, realistic choices
based on their personal goals while others may wish to make choices for
fun. .hatever choices they make, they will have to keep throughout the
simulation.
(. Students e$amine the ;ccupational 5andbook, <ictionary of ;ccupational
"itles, or other reference materials for #obs=careers re3uiring the following
educational re3uirements before selecting their personal choice for the
78onsider *y 9uture: form.
a. 5igh school diploma
b. ( year associate degree
c. % year bachelor’s degree
d. >( years master’s degree
e. >3 years law degree=)5<
f. >- years *<, not specialist
3. Students convert the information from the 78onsider *y 9uture: form to
the Student )rofile form. Some students may try to change the
predictions now that they know that the forms will be used to make
purchases. "he teacher needs to make sure that students do not change
their original information.
%. "he teacher e$plains to the students that they will be involved in
simulation. 0ach day of the simulation will represent a month in the life of
an adult. "here will be paydays and bills to pay. 9or appro$imately %&
minutes per class, students will engage in the simulation.
&. ;n the first day of the simulation, the students will create a spending plan
on the 8hecking ,ccount Spreadsheet using the Student )rofile form and
the resource packet with costs for items needed. , computer may be
used for spreadsheet calculations or students may pencil in the costs and
use a calculator.
10&
-. Students will receive money for their 7Savings ,ccount:. "he amount
received will vary according to the students. "hey will receive ?& for each
day they have attended class, but one dollar will be subtracted for each
absence or day that they have arrived to class late. "he money in this
account will be presented in a 7check: See resource packet! and its use is
up to the students.
/. Students write a check to pay for each e$pense but leave their checks in
their checkbook until they visit the 7@eal .orld Spending )lace: room.
"he check register is to be completed accurately as well as the
information on the spreadsheet form. "he teacher needs to instruct
students on how to void a check. 'f possible, real checks can be usedA
#ust make sure that no checkbooks go home. ;r, the teacher can create
checkbooks for each student using the model in the resource packet.
B. <uring each day of the simulation, students will enter the 7@eal .orld
Spending )lace,: a room with payment booths for each item on the
budget. "hey will deposit a check for the amount of the item on the
budget. 'n addition, they will select a 71ife’s 1ittle Surprises: ticket
indicating an une$pected gift or bill.
C. .hen all their bills are paid, the students may visit the lu$ury table to
purchase additional items from dinner to a vacation, clothes to electronics.
10. 'n the event of a lack of funds, students may visit the bank to ask for a
loan or they may change some of their fle$ible bills e$4 car choice! but
they may not change the Student )rofile.
Materials and Resources
• , large room with several tables and a few chairs is needed to accommodate
the payment stations and payment officers at some of the tables.
