Position Opening Job Description: Technical Director for The Kitchen
The Kitchen, one of New York City’s oldest nonprofit performance and visual arts organizations, is seeking a full-time Technical Director for its 155-seat black box theater and 2,000 sq. ft. gallery space. The Technical Director oversees all technical aspects of The Kitchen’s gallery exhibitions and works with the Production Manager /Lighting Supervisor to oversee the technical aspects of The Kitchen’s theater productions. In addition, the TD serves as building supervisor for The Kitchen building. Primary responsibilities include: leading technical exhibition planning meetings, hiring gallery staff, and providing technical guidance and support to gallery artists; working with PM/LD to schedule and hire technical crew for all theater productions; attending production meetings with artists and curators; providing technical support and advice to artists as needed; working with and co-supervising technical crew during load-ins, rehearsals, performances, and load-outs. Shared responsibilities include: managing the purchase of new equipment and production supplies within an annual allotted budget; supervising the maintenance and repair of all theater and gallery systems including lighting, sound, video, scenic, and rigging systems; and ensuring that all performance, backstage, gallery, and public areas are clean, safe, and well-organized, while meeting all current New York City Dept of Buildings and FDNY code standards. As building supervisor, the TD is responsible for the safe and proper operation of all kitchen facilities and equipment, and as such manages outside contractors to handle HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and the elevator, while taking care of minor repairs when possible. The Technical Director works closely with two in-house curators on artistic projects and supervises a part-time janitor / handyman. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. Candidates should have at least 5 years work experience in the performing arts and be well versed in sound, video, lighting, stage management, and stage construction techniques. Sound engineering experience a plus. Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential. Position available immediately.
