The center will retrain 200 unemployed people for new careers in the next year. Reagan said the program justified his., hopes that the American people would take the challenge to retrain themselves," said Garvey. "He said it vindicated his belief that the American people are|self-reliant enough to pull themselves through this time of high unemployment," Garvey recalled. "It was quite a surprise to me." DrJGarvey said, "As soon as I heard that voice, I knew it was the* President." Dr. Garvey feels J that Reagan is "warm and vibrant." Cordes Resigns As Director. Coach
Garry Cordes, former director of the Criminal Justice department, resigned late last week for "personal reasons," according to Academic Dean Dr. David Palmer. * The resignation, which became effective Monday, May 2 at 9:00 a.m., was prompted by the health of Cordes* wife, Palmer said. With only three weeks left in the term, Dr. Palmer said that he will direct the department, working closely with the other Criminal Justice faculty members,,-rather than appoint an interim department director. During the summer, a department head will be named, Palmer said. Cordes was teaching only one class this term, which will now be Incumbent editor Donna Peterson said, "The Assistant Editor position is an important one in the organization of The Merciad, providing support, high technical competency, and managerial skills. Palmer doesn't see this disruption as having any negative effects on the students, especially as Cordes already had much of his class material prepared. "I think the transition will be quite smooth," Palmer said. ..> There should be "very little interruption in academics," Palmer added. .* I

On Taking AChance
Some short takes../ The 1983-84 editorial leaders off the MERCIAD were chosen last week and will assume management of the newspaper in mid-May. The new Editor and Assistant Editor, Carla Anderson and Martha Camp respectively, both possess the drive, the ambition, and the talent to produce an A-l publication with a well-trained, well-supervised staff. As the two new editors already realize, it is not easy to write and design a weekly newspaper and expect to please each and every one of the more than 2,000 readers. But they knew that when they applied for their posts and didn't let it discourage them. For anyone entering a new position, the MSG officers for example, the support of the college is so important. What they do can only become better if the community offers feedback, both positive and negative. As one academic year closes and another goes into the planning stages, everyone should take notice of the new student Jeadership core and let them know what you think. The success off the sellout David Brenner concert last Saturday night must be credited to the dedicated efforts;of the MSG reps who worked for months on the event. The ticket sales, publicity, stage, lighting, audio, and coordinating crews made the performance professional and pleasant. The risk in bringing in a top-name comedian was well-worth taking. MSG took the chance and it paid off. The crowd size and spirit proved that. Hopefully, the major special event will become an annual occurrence for Mercyhurst in the*future.

"If you go up real fast like a rocket, you're going to come down like a rocket, but if you plot along in a nice gradual incline over the -years, when it starts to go down, it'll go down slowly, building a strong foundation ... \ MERCI AD News Editor Students applying for apartments last week discovered it was the favored place to reside for the upcoming year. * f Approximately 216 students sought one of the 36 available apartments which house 144 students. Although apartments were awarded on a point system, students crowded the hallway of second floor Main and the office of Housing and Safety Director, Phyllis Aiello, to assure'themselves of an apartment. Aiello awards apartments through the point* system rather than on a first come basis because "everybody has the same shot," she said. if * Competition for apartments was limited to juniors and seniors because the number of applicants was higher as compared to other years. "The original intention of the college is to house juniors and seniors in the apartments," Aiello said. I £ Upperclassmen who presently live off-campus decided to return to on-campus housing causing an increase of apartment applicants. Aiello cited another reason why it was so difficult to acquire an apartment. "Students are retaining their apartments because they like the 11festyle. Those students who stay, eliminate the.younger population." r Presidents apartment building (third building) was the most sought after building with 23 groups of students interested in residing there. Twenty-two groups applied for Founders while 14 groups wanted to live in the Mercy apartments. Third floor front apartments facing Old Main were the most requested, Aiello said. Points were determined by the academic credit of each student. Aiello tried to accommodate students with their first or second choices. However, if neither choice was available, Aiello placed them in an apartment which was in the building they specified. Students who did not have sufficient points to get an apartment will be forced to live in the resident halls another year or seek off-campus housing. Those students who selected to live in the dorm another year signed up yesterday. This process was done on a seniority basis using a lottery system, Aiello said. Seniors were first, followed by juniors and sophomores.i j

The New SAC Officers Assume Duties
By Amy Wood worth MERCIAD Staff Reporter The Student Activities Committee (SAC) officer core]for the 1983-84 academic year has been selected. ^ A selection committee consisting of Marjorie McDermott, director of the Student Union; Dave Robinson, MSG President; John Jones, SAC chairperson; and Laura Copney, outgoing SAC chairperson led an interview process exploring each candidate's qualifications. b "We directed each candidate through a series of questions and asked them their plans for next year if chosen," explained Jones. Everyone on the selection committee offered valuable opinions and comments. They were a great help," Jones added. * The position of SAC secretary President Reagan asked Dr. Garvey if federal regulations p o s e d a p r o b l e m in establishing the pilot program. "I told him that one problem from the beginning was that if people were unemployed, they could not go to school," Dr. Garvey said. He explained that state and federal regulations governing unemployment compensation prevent unemployed people from going to college. "I told him that state and will be filled by freshman Pat Callahan. "I feel very qualified and happy to be a part of SAC," said; Callahan. "We have our work cut out for us, and as a group, we're anxious to make next year a success," he added. Callahan will also be publishing an SAC newsletter on a bi-weekly basis, lit will contain points brought up during SAC meetings, information on up-coming events on the campus as well as within the Mercyhurst community, and a report of past events. Sophomore James Sherrod was s e l e c t e d for SAC vicechairperson. "He is qualified and has always been involved with SAC. I know 1 can depend on him," Jones said. { Freshman. Christie Smith will serve as SAC treasurer. "I have held similar offices in high school federal government had to waive the regulation for the program," added Garvey.» Reagan told Garvey.he was unaware of the regulation and said he would immediately begin taking steps to eliminate that clause ofjthe unemployment regulations. ^According to Garvey, ithe Washington Department of Education, at the request of the White House, called Mercyhurst on Monday, May 2 to

and feel I am capable of keeping the books and managing* the funds," said Smith. "I hope to do the job as well as Joanie Podolinski has done this past-year," she added. The director of public relations will be filled by two officers next year. Junior Brent Scarpo and sophomore Jean Moniewski will be holding the position, and hope to improve this facet of SAC. As part of next year's public relations drive, SAC hopes to establish a representative from each dorm to receive input from students and help initiate activities. The new SAC also has big plans for next year with activities including film festivals, movies, inviting small bands to entertain and establishing the Christmas formal as a tradition. * "We have many ideas and goals," said Jones. "We all work really well together and I am looking forward to next year, it ought to be the best SAC ever," he added. check into the problem with the federal regulations., for Dr.^Garvey also said that a letter was sent to President Reagan on Tuesday, May 3 inviting him to come to Mercyhurst this summer or next fall to meet some of the careers program participants and tour the campus. * "f J f Garvey said, "President Reagan said he thought the private college sector should be commended for coming forward and establishing such a program.'' Dr. Garvey said it was great to talk with Reagan for ten minutes. "It was a very pleasant experience."

President Robinson i Takes Gavet At Meeting
By Darlene Nolan MERCIAD Staff Reporter | At the Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG) meeting on Tuesday, May 3, the newly elected officer core took their posts to run the meeting. MSG President, Dave Robinson welcomed the new department representatives for 1983-84. After the^ interview, Brenner said he would most likely go to "The Props Room" lounge in downtown Erie where young comedians, many from New York City, perform.?. Looking for something to do ourselves, my friends and I headed for "The Props Room, too. Shortly after our arrival, David Brenner and his friends came through the door. He sat in a corner and enjoyed the two talented comics just like the rest of us. Before he left he signed a few autographs, including a copy of Soft Pretzels, With Mustard, owned by newlyappointed MERCIAD News Editor Karen Merkle. My mother was right. Hurst Blasts Boro
Revenge seemed to be on the minds of the Lady Lakers as they faced Edinboro State in a local double-header. The Blue and Green dropped two the year before to? the Lady Scots, but this meeting proved different. The first game saw extra^ innings with the score deadlocked at 1-1 with Laura Ames coming through with the winning hit. Mary Butler was credited with the win on the mound. Perfect, could be the only word for the performance of pitcher Laura Ames and the rest of the Lady Lakers as they downed the Boro 5-0 in the night cap. Laura Ames pitched a flawless game as the Laker defense went errorless. Candy Hoover had the big stick at the plate for the Blue and Green as she went 3-3 in the contest. The Lady Lakers now stand at an impressive 12-2-1 on the season.
