The righteous path
I got a brand new car that drinks a bunch of gas I got a house in a neighborhood that’s fading fast I got a dog and a cat that don’t fight too much I got a few hundred channels to keep me in touch I got a beautiful wife and three tow-headed kids I got a couple of big secrets I’d kill to keep hid I don’t know God but I fear his wrath I’m trying to keep focused on the righteous path — Drive-By Truckers, “The Righteous Path” “A new survey of Americans’ knowledge of religion,” says an Associated Press report from September 28, “found that atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons outperformed Protestants and Roman Catholics in answering questions about major religions, while many respondents could not correctly give the most basic tenets of their own faiths.” The results were sad. The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, who surveyed 3,412 people earlier this year to conduct the poll, has seemingly confirmed that while Americans claim to be a religious people, there are appalling gaps in their knowledge. Like the man in the song quoted above, they fear the wrath of “God” (whoever He may be to them) but don’t really know Him. The righteous path, as they define it, is a very expansive roadway, accommodating just about anyone who would travel it. Yet the Lord says that “wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait [i.e., confined] is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matt. 7:13-14). Finding this narrow way requires knowledge. A vague, nebulous understanding of the things of God will lead inexorably to that wide gate. Paul exhorted Timothy, “Study to show thyself approved unto God … rightly dividing the word of God” (II Tim. 2:15), and while the word study here means to give diligence rather than the sense we usually give it, the meaning is essentially the same. We are to diligently seek and acquire knowledge of God’s will for us. It is essential that members of the Lord’s body avoid the kinds of ignorance found in this recent poll. The true righteous path is narrow and we are bound to find it and stay on it.
