UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES – DIVERSITY TIMELINE
The University Libraries Diversity Timeline has been created to highlight important events,
committees, initiatives, library resources and reports, to recognize the efforts of library staff
in promoting a diverse community

2003 - 2004
Dr. Julius Chambers Commemoration of Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court
Decision, UNCG Race and Gender Institute hosted by University Libraries
The online component of the Betty H. Carter Women Veterans Historical Project is launched,
funded through a Library Services and Technology Grant administered by the North Carolina
State Library
The Carolina Consortium began in 2003 to enable libraries in North Carolina and South
Carolina to use their bulk purchasing power to obtain favorable pricing on a variety of
electronic resources. Of the 180 member institutions, all 19 Historically Black Colleges and
Universities are members of the Carolina Consortium, a group founded by and run by UNCG
librarians. Through the consortium, these HBCU schools enjoy approximately $30 million
dollars per year in cost avoidance on important scholarly resources.
Community Forum and Information Fair on Local Literacy Efforts as a part of the UNCG Race

2007
Report of Ad Hoc Committee on Exploring Diversity Issues is released. The report included a
recommendation that we appoint a permanent Library Diversity Committee
Gerald Holmes’ position is re-titled to Reference Librarian and Diversity Coordinator which
includes being chair of the newly formed Diversity Committee, and Diversity Coordinator for
the new Post MLS Diversity Residency Librarian program
Library Diversity Committee is appointed
A planning committee was formed to create the components of a Post MLS Diversity
Residency Librarian program, which was approved by the Dean of the University Libraries
and the Administrative Advisory Group

Rosann Bazirjian (Dean of University Libraries) was appointed to the UNCG Sub-Committee
on the Recruitment and Retention of Minority Faculty
Sha Li Zhang (Asst Dean for Collections and Technical Services) is President-Elect for the
Chinese American Librarians Association
Gerald Holmes (Reference Librarian and Diversity Coordinator) is on the Executive Board of
Black Caucus of the American Library Association
2008
“Diversity in Libraries” was presented by Dr. Camila Alire during the University Libraries and
Department of Library and Information Studies Lecture Series in March 2008
After a national search, the University Libraries selects Jason Alston as the first Post-MLS
Diversity Resident Librarian in July
Diversity web page is created adding content to communicate with the campus and the
Greensboro community about the Libraries diversity initiatives
Hermann Trojanowski, from the Special Collections and University Archives Department
(SCUA) conducts the first two oral history interviews for the UNCG Institutional Memory
Collection (part of the African American Memory Project)
The University Libraries hosted Tonja Hunter as part of the Association of Southeastern
Colleges and Research Libraries (ASERL) and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Libraries Alliance (HBCU) exchange program. Ms. Hunter spent two weeks in the Reference
and Instructional Services Department, consulting with UNCG librarians and working on
projects related to information literacy and low performing first year students. Ms. Hunter’s
home institution was Lawson State Community College in Birmingham and Bessemer,
Alabama
Mr. Xiao Chen and Ms. Ling Xu from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE)
Library visited our library from September – November
The University Libraries hosted the visit of Ms. Zina Sochirca, Director of Information &
Library Science Department at the Free International University of Moldova. Ms. Sochirca
came to UNCG and discussed a potential grant proposal that would help the Moldovan
library to train its librarians and would enhance the use technology
2009
The first cohort of 14 students began in August, known as the ACE (Academic and Cultural
Enrichment) Scholars. The University Libraries and the Department of Library and

Information Studies at UNCG were awarded a Federal grant of $862,014 from the Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program to create
this program. The grant funded students from under-represented groups into a two year
master’s degree program to help increase the number of librarians from under-served
communities in the United States
The University Libraries hosted the visit from the U.S. Ambassador (Mr. Asif Chaudrey) and
the officers of the Moldovan Embassy (Ministry Counselor Andrei Galbur and First Secretary
Iurie Tabuncic) to UNCG in February 2009
Jackson Library Staff Association and the Libraries Diversity Committee collected $106.66
and three large boxes of school supplies for the Hampton Leadership Academy (Local
Elementary School) School Supplies Donation Project as part of the Libraries Holiday
Community Project
University Library Staff members volunteer to obtain SafeZone training. SafeZone creates a
network of allies who promote a campus environment that is open and welcoming to all
LGBTQ students. Approximately 12% of the current Library Faculty and Staff have completed
SafeZone workshops
Jason Alston (Diversity Resident) planned and moderated a UNCG Multicultural Resource
Center program that featured 3 African American faculty members who authored books
during the year
The University Libraries hosted two librarians, Ms. Hongxia Dai and Ms. Chiping Ji, from the
Shanghai University of Finance & Economics Library from September – December. They
conducted their research projects, interacted with library faculty and staff, exchanged their
work experience, shared the best library practices, and presented two sessions on library
projects in China. A Planning Team was formed to provide the two librarians with a pleasant
and positive experience at UNCG
Diversity Committee hosts a Brown Bag Luncheon presentation program with Ms. Hongxia
and Ms. Chiping Ji during their visit from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
Library in China
The University Libraries conducted ClimateQUAL®: Organizational Climate and Diversity
Assessment which is an assessment of library staff perceptions concerning (a) their library's
commitment to the principles of diversity, (b) organizational policies and procedures, and (c)
staff attitudes
The Journal of Black Masculinity was created. JBM is University Libraries’ first significant
attempt at maintaining an open access journal with Open Journal Systems (OJS)
Jason Alston spoke about his Residency position with the University Libraries in the Carolina

Peacemaker's article, "First diversity resident urges Blacks into library science field"
Libraries collaborated with LIS Department for first iDEAL (Information, Diversity,
Engagement, Access and Libraries) Summit “LGBTQI Out on the Open Shelves: Serving
Hidden Communities” in November
Gerald Holmes presented a poster session titled, “Ethnic Minority Librarian Recruitment: 2
Programs with 1 Goal!” at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, IL
Digital Library on American Slavery was launched in 2009
2010
Jason Alston completes Post-MLS Diversity Resident Librarian program and in July, after a
national search, the University Libraries selects LaTesha Velez as the second Post-MLS
Diversity Resident Librarian in July
Civil Rights Greensboro digital collection was funded in 2008 through a Library Services and
Technology Grant administered by the North Carolina State Library (Cat Saleeby McDowell,
Principal Investigator) and launched in 2010
UNCG African American Institutional Memory Collection oral history interviews were placed
online in 2010
Diversity Committee provides Disability Services Workshops for Library Staff
Diversity Committee provides a Diverse History of UNCG Workshops for Library Staff
Middle Eastern Student Panel on their Library Experience in the U.S. for Library Staff
University Libraries creates and host the JoAnne Smart (Drane) and Bettye Davis Tillman
Exhibit. They were the first African Americans to attend UNCG in 1956-60
Jason Alston served on the Executive Board of the Black Caucus of the American Library
Association. Also, Jason served as logistical co-chair for planning of the National Conference
of African American Librarians in Birmingham, AL
Tonja Hunter, Amy Harris and Gerald Holmes presented a panel session on the 2008
Exchange Program Tonja Hunter’s project related to information literacy and low performing
first year students at the National Conference of African American Librarians in Birmingham,
AL
Mr. Zhongming Xu, a visiting librarian from Tongji University, (Shanghai, China) visited from
September 2010 – December 2010

Cataloging Department hosted an ACE Scholars intern, Martha Parker, in Spring 2010
2011
The first cohort of the ACE Scholars Program graduated with MLS degrees in May. They are
either working (13) or enrolled in a PhD program (1)
Another grant was awarded from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Laura Bush
21st Century Librarian Program in partnership with the LIS Department. The second cohort
of 14 students began in August
Diversity Committee begins providing Diversity Movie Series for Library Staff
“What does it mean to be a Latino Poet?” – A Discussion of Ethnic Identity and Poetry was
presented by Dr. Mark Smith Soto in October
University Libraries Diversity and Inclusion Survey Report completed
North Carolina Runaway Slaves Ads Project digital collection was funded in 2011 and
launched in 2012, funded through a Library Services and Technology Grant administered by
the North Carolina State Library (David Gwynn, Principal Investigator)
LaTesha Velez completes two training programs sponsored by the Human Resources
Department: the Supervisory/Management Program and the Diversity Program
LaTesha Velez was also awarded a Reach21 Scholarship in June 2011 which paid for travel,
registration, and a three night stay in New Orleans, LA to attend the 2011 ALA Annual
Conference
LaTesha Velez was awarded a ACRL Librarian Scholarship which is given to new librarians and
paid for registration to the ACRL 2011 Conference in Philadelphia, PA and provided a $250
stipend
University Libraries staff both visited and hosted Jacquie Keleher as part of the Association of
Southern Colleges and Research Libraries (ASERL) and the Historically Black Colleges and
Universities Libraries Alliance (HBCU) exchange program. UNCG University Libraries staff
visited Ms. Keleher’s home institution to see firsthand their circumstances post Hurricane
Katrina. Ms. Keleher then spent 2 weeks in the University Libraries receiving assistance with
policy and process design and other issues related to combining various aspects of a small
Access Services department into a single service point in anticipation of reopening a
renovated 3 story library facility. Ms. Keleher’s home institution was Southern University of
New Orleans.
Dr. Xiaoye Li spoke at the Conference for Entrepreneurial Librarians. He was accompanied by

Ms. Na Li both from the Shanghai University of Finance & Economics Library in March
Mr. Fan Yang, a visiting scholar in the History Department, home institution in Renmin
University, helped with the translation of title pages from Chinese to English in the
Cataloging Department, June – September 2011
2012
Eight of the second cohort graduated in May and are already employed, 1 is enrolling in a
PhD program, and 5 continued and graduated the following year

After a national search, the University Libraries selects Nataly Blas as the third Post-MLS
Diversity Resident Librarian in September
Hermann Trojanowski made opening remarks and gave an update on the African American
Institutional Memory Project at the 1960-2015: An Interactive Session Between African
American Students during 2012 Alumni Reunion Weekend to promote the outreach efforts
of the University Libraries in March
Linda Burr coordinated the University Libraries assistance in sponsoring a session at the
Alumni Reunion to bring together UNCG's African American graduates from 1960-1970 with
current students. The discussion was an eye opener for current students and offered the
early graduates an opportunity to share their unique history
Gerald Holmes served on the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for the Office of Equity,
Diversity and Inclusion for the University
Gerald Holmes served on the Planning Committee for the 45th Anniversary (2013) of the
Neo-Black Society
Gerald Holmes served on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. UNC at Greensboro Campus
Observance Speaker Selection Committee for January 2013
Sha Li Zhang served UNCG International Students and Scholar Services (ISSS) Committee
Cross-Cultural Communication Brown Bag Luncheon presented by Nataly Blas and Emily
Mann for Library Staff
David Gwynn presented “Civil Rights Greensboro and other community-based collaborations
at UNCG” at the 23rd Conference on African American Culture and Experience (CACE) in
October

Diversity Committee provides two “Welcoming Patrons with Diverse Abilities” Training
Workshops for Library Staff in March
“Emotional Intelligence in Libraries” was presented by Dr. Camila Alire for the ACE Scholars
Training Session in April
Gerald Holmes and Michael Crumpton served as a Co-Principal Investigators for the third
ACE Scholars program grant that received $442,063 from the Institute of Museum and
Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program (2013-2014). This third
ACE Scholars grant focused on community college librarians
Xiaodong Liu (Leslie Liu) a MLIS graduate student at Beijing Normal University was a visitor to
the LIS Program for the fall semester. During her stay she worked with Mary Jane Conger in
the Cataloging Department to help catalog a variety of materials (books, DVDs, CDs) in
Chinese
The Libraries conducted a student survey to determine if resources and services
adequately serve diverse populations, including minorities, international students, the
disabled and the LGBT community. Follow-up included adding a translator to the web
page, installing a welcome sign over the Reference Desk in a variety of languages,
providing additional staff training, enhancing access to appropriate LibGuides and
addressing collections gaps.
2013
The UNCG University Libraries (along with ZSR Library, Wake Forest University) hosted
Cotina Jones as part of the Association of Southeastern Colleges and Research Libraries
(ASERL) and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Libraries Alliance (HBCU)
exchange program. Ms. Jones’s project focused on creating a Comprehensive Orientation for
New Library Staff. Ms. Jones’s home institution was North Carolina Central University. She
also presented on this topic at NCLA
Gerald Holmes was selected to serve as a Mentor in the Association of College and Research
Libraries (ACRL) Dr. E. J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor Program. He was matched with a
Spectrum Scholar who attended and graduated from Simmons College (MLS) and was hired
at the University of Delaware
Linda Burr coordinated the University Libraries assistance in sponsoring the second reunion
session which brought over 100 current students and returning alumni to discuss the
university's 1960's history
Richard Cox and the ERIT development team worked with Special Collections and University
Archives to complete phase 2 of 3 of the new Born-Digital Records Management tool. He
completed functionality and speed upgrades on the Digital Library on American Slavery,

and have added the NC Runaway Slaves Project and Buncombe County Slave Deeds project
to the search interface

Gerald Holmes was awarded the Outstanding Service Award for his service as African
American and Diaspora Studies Library Liaison
Exhibit - Making their mark: a collection of autographed works by African American Authors
in February
Urban Development in Greensboro digital collection launched, documenting the effect of
urban renewal on African American neighborhoods in Greensboro
University Libraries Diversity Strategic Plan 2014-2019 was completed
Linda Burr - Because of the African American Oral History Project, we were able to cultivate
three participants from the Class of 1964 to become Jackson Society members. This was
their first gift to the University.
The ACE Scholars Institute was held and invited student from all 3 ACE Cohorts to participate
Diversity Committee provides presentation “Developing an International Perspective on
Librarianship: Experiences Abroad” for Library Staff in December
2015

Orolando Duffus created and promoted the “Diversity and Global Engagement Exposition”
for the University Libraries to increase multicultural awareness and assist student
organizations in promoting themselves to students on January 15th. Orolando Duffus
created a proposal report that was submitted to the Library Diversity Committee and the
Dean of University Libraries
Orolando Duffus created a Virtual Presentation about the “Diversity and Global Engagement
Exposition” for the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in Portland, OR
Orolando Duffus will be providing a panel presentation about the Residency Program at the
American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco, CA
DGHi Explorers program launched in partnership with the Hayes-Taylor YMCA. This is a
history digitization outreach project serving at-risk youth and funded through an IMLS
Sparks!Ignition grant awarded in 2014 to David Gwynn and Stephen Catlett
Diversity Committee sponsors African American History of UNCG presentation for African
American History Month
Stacey Krim presents “Outreach to the Invisible: Archivists as Advocates to the LGBTW
Community” at the Spring conference of the Society of North Carolina Archivists in March
Gerald Holmes was awarded the 2014 Achievement in Library Diversity Research Honoree by
the American Library Association. “Importance of Libraries in Student Success” was the
program topic presented by American Library Association President Courtney Young. While
at UNCG Courtney Young met with the Diversity Committee and made remarks along with
others at a reception to recognize Gerald Holmes for receiving a National Award
Former ACE Scholar Martha Parker is a candidate for ALA Council
