Thesis Writing Tips for Graduate Students
Thesis writing tips may come in handy in the later years of graduate school. Studying psychology at the graduate  level can be particularly challenging because at the end of their studies, graduate students face one final task, the  culmination of six to eight years worth of intense academic study: writing a thesis paper for an advisory  committee.

Psychology graduate students can expect to read hundreds of papers and case studies during their time at  graduate school. Writing a thesis requires summarizing many years worth of research as well as conducting an  analysis of other people’s research. Before starting to write a thesis, a graduate student must assemble his or her advisory committee, which is a  group of psychology professors that guide the thesiswriting process. This committee is responsible for hearing  the defense of the thesis as well as making recommendations and finally approving the thesis. Students are  strongly encouraged to select committee members that they are familiar with and have worked with in the past.  Getting to know graduate faculty members is essential to succeeding in a psychology graduate program. The first step in writing a thesis is to choose a topic. Through the course of their studies, psychology students  have probably come across a few research interests. Students should discuss topics with their committee chair  before committing to writing a thesis on the subject. Students should remember that if they are not interested in  writing about a topic, no one will be interested in reading about it. After settling on a topic, students need to formulate a thesis statement. It goes without saying that the statement  must be unique and original, otherwise students may be deemed guilty of a form of plagiarism. Students should start their research only after getting their thesis statement approved. To make things easier, they  should document their research along the way to save time later. Students must let the research guide them  through the writing of their thesis paper; it will give them an outline that they can flesh out later.

The best time to start writing the bulk of the paper is after all the research is complete Students must focus  completely on their writing while they work on the first draft and present it to their advisory committee chair.  The final draft will likely take several full days to complete, after which they must defend it before the  committee.
