The Trail Regional BCSPCA has a handsome

fell ill, so Nunu was surrendered to the shelter
on January 17, 2014.
Nunu can be nervous when things change too
quickly for him, so would do best in a quiet and
relaxed home. Nunu doesn’t require much to
be happy and ofers afection warmly when he
feels safe in his environment. Although he is
older, he has a lot of love to ofer the right home.
He did live with another cat in his previous
home, but prefers to get all of the attention
from his people, so would love a place where he
can be the only king cat. He will need a good
diet, as he is a little overweight at the moment,
but would love a little wet food from time to
time. If you are looking for a gentle addition to
your family, Nunu could be the cat for you.

Dive In And Make A Diference!
Te Greater Trail Hospice Society is looking for swim-
mers to participate in their annual Swimathon to raise
funds for the program. Swimmers support hospice by
committing to swim a certain distance and then collecting
pledges. Te Swimathon is the major fund raising event of
the year and will happen on March 6 between noon and
8 pm at the Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre. All money
raised at the Swimathon will support hospice in the Great-
er Trail area.
Tis event can be a great opportunity for experienced
swimmers to get wet for a great cause. If your resolution
was to get ft in 2014 and you have not started yet, training
for the Swimathon will give you a good start. For runners,
this is a great cross training opportunity.
Te Greater Trail Hospice Society provides trained vol-
unteers to provide bedside respite either in a home set-
ting or in a care facility. A trained professional works with
the families and medical personnel to provide symptom
management and co-ordinate access to resources for the
client and the family. Te society also provides commun-
ity awareness events, training for volunteers and medical
professionals, grief support programs, palliative equip-
ment loans and a library dealing with issues surrounding
end of life issues.
If you would like to swim for hospice, information pack-
ages, complete with pledge forms are available from the

Artisan Distillery
And Tasting Room Opens
Kootenay Country Craf Distillery, an artisan producer
of hand-crafed spirits, will host an open house 12 pm to
5 pm, Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8, to celebrate its
grand opening. It is located 8 km north of Winlaw.
Kootenay Country Craf Distillery will initially feature
Valhalla Vodka, a small-batch, handcrafed vodka, made
from Selkirk Mountain spring waters and heirloom grains
(organic certifcation pending) grown in the Creston Val-
ley. Valhalla Vodka will be followed with other 100-Mile-
Diet products: locally-sourced gins, favored fruit bran-
dies and aged whiskies.
“As the only distillery with a tasting room in the West
Kootenays, we are excited to give both local and regional
spirit lovers an opportunity to enjoy a taste of local spirits
just feet from where it was made,” said Lora Goodwin, co-
founder of Kootenay Country Craf Distillery.
Te 2,000 square foot distillery is a brand new facility,
designed specifcally for the distillation process. Te adja-
cent tasting room was converted from an existing building.
Snow Inspires Creativity For North
Valley Mountain Film Fest 2014
Te wonder of winter captures the imagination of sever-
al flmmakers showcasing their creative works at this year’s
North Valley Mountain Film Festival, to be held Saturday,
March 8, 7 pm, at the Silverton Memorial Hall. From the
professional team at Sweetgrass Productions, whose fea-
ture flm Valhalla has gained awards at international fes-
tivals, to local snow enthusiasts carrying cameras, this
year’s artists convey their love and appreciation for the
magic of snow.
But it is winter that receives the greatest attention at
this year’s festival. Local Noboard shredder Randy Spears
gives us a precious glimpse of an old growth forest in win-
ter with his flm Big Trees. Another local ski ripper, Pete
Schwartz, shares some of the beauty he has experienced
during his winter wanderings over the past few years. And
our feature flm, Valhalla, triggers nostalgic feelings for
winter’s most ephemeral feature, snow, in all its natural,
unpossessable glory. Valhalla’s storyline stitches together
layers of life wrapped in ski season metaphor, all in the
spirit of Kootenay values, as observed from the perspec-
tives of visiting flmmakers skiing and flming in this area.
Te visuals and soundtrack will be sure to inspire the im-
agination.
Please note the change in venue; this year the North
Valley Mountain Film Festival will be take place at the
Silverton Memorial Hall in order to accommodate a larger
audience. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth and
students, and children aged 10 and under are free. Tickets
can be purchased at Silverton Building Supplies in Silver-
ton or Rutabaga’s in New Denver. Tis event usually sells
out, so get your tickets early! Doors open at 6:30 pm, flms
start at 7 pm. Refreshments will be available.

Space Project Seeking Help: High
Altitude Ballooning Mission
Hello, we are a group of four students ranging from
grade seven to grade twelve, from Crawford Bay School,
BC. We started this project, Te High Altitude Balloon
(HAB) Eos Mission, as a small scale science project to ex-
pand our knowledge of physics and space. In this project,
we will send a helium weather balloon into near space,
and with our very best eforts, attempt to recover it. If we
recover the balloon, we will use the digital footage from
the onboard camera and devices to make a video pres-
entation. We hope to collect other data including: pres-
sure, temperature, altitude and humidity. We will present
the video and data to our school, and upload the footage
to Youtube and other online sites for everyone to see.
Tis project is going to be dependent on the community
around us for funding and mentoring. We will need help
with many subjects in this project, and we are searching
for mentoring in physics, space, weather, technical com-
ponents, to name a few. Funding is also going to be a ma-
jor component in making this project a success. If you
would like to support this project in any way, please con-
tact our mentor, Kate Okros, at [email protected] or call

our funding obtained by March 14.
Our launch will take place in the frst week of May 2014,

Cancer Society Needs Volunteers
With Dafodil Month just around the corner, the Can-
adian Cancer Society is reaching out and urging Koote-
nay residents to consider volunteering their time to sell
the dafodil pin this April. Te Society has an urgent need
for more volunteers during this month. Tese volunteers
will work in communities across BC during April to re-
mind us all to buy and wear a pin to show support for
those fghting cancer.
Volunteers like Cranbrook’s Susan Fahey help the So-
ciety to achieve its vision of creating a world where no
Canadian fears cancer – and just a few hours can make a
huge diference.
At age 37 Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer. Su-
san grew up in Cranbrook and has worked at the same job

Cancer Society cont’d from pg 32
During her recovery process, Susan became involved with
the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer. Her volunteer
role kept her going through her recovery. She felt it was
helpful to know that she could help others, that she wasn’t
the only one, and that she didn’t have to face it alone.
Afer a few years with the Cancer Connection program,
Susan went on to volunteer for Relay For Life and then
became a leader for Dafodil Month. “I know what its
like to get diagnosed, it’s extremely scary. I hope to show
people that you can survive it. Tere is hope and that is
what the Cancer Society has always shown me.”
Still a volunteer in Dafodil Month, Susan has now been
11 years cancer free. “Anything can happen in your life, you
can think ‘this is the end or the worst thing that ever hap-
pened to me’, and it was, but you can also realize you can
fght it. Join the fght!”
