SIMS courses

SIMS
The SIMS management information system incorporates many integrated modules to help manage pupil records, attendance and behaviour, pupil performance, curriculum and timetable organisation and more. SIMS has a strong focus on enhancing the standards in teaching and learning, supporting schools in reducing workloads and meeting the challenge of continuous school improvement. Information is entered into SIMS once and reused throughout the system, reducing the chance of errors and making sure the latest information is readily available. SIMS can bring these benefits to your school: • reduced workload for the whole school • more effective administration in the school office • improved pupil performance and raise teaching standards • improved management of special educational needs • record and tackle behaviour and truancy effectively • develop the curriculum and manage timetables • administer student options, examination entries and results Each course in this section deals with specific areas of SIMS, and gives delegates the knowledge to achieve these benefits for the school.

Course content The content of this course varies depending on the learning objectives set by the delegates. Previous workshops have covered the following skills: • how to use the report designer – choosing fields, setting filters, defining a sort order, setting effective dates • using simple presentation outputs – Word List and Excel • using related fields in reports • simple document formatting • creating label reports using a Mail Merge output • simple analysis reports Course prerequisites • delegates must be aware of the data held in SIMS • a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required Participants should bring • details of the reports they wish to create; if delegates have reports that they have previously created, and that they wish to adapt, they should bring these along in electronic format Other information • this is a sharing course: two members from one school may attend the course sharing a computer at a reduced rate to the second delegate. • There are two types of reporting courses - formal and workshop courses: - formal courses aim to solely develop delegate skills in the specific subject - workshop courses (such as this one) provide limited taught elements and focus mainly on creation of specific reports to utilise back at school. To benefit from the workshop course delegates will need to have ideas about which reports they wish to create by the end of the session

SIMS Discover - as featured in the Summer 2010 issue of our newsletter
SIMS MATTERS SIMS MATTERS Summer 2010 EdICT News 9

upil data is an incredibly powerful tool for raising achievement in schools and for understanding when and why pupils fall below targets. Teachers often do not have the time or the expertise to interrogate the data on their MIS to access this gold mine. That’s where a new tool called SIMS Discover will help unlock the power of the pupil information school leaders and teachers record on SIMS. SIMS Discover will use the very latest technology to aid teachers in their quest to raise pupil achievement by revealing which of their pupils needs help and why. Phil Neal, managing director of SIMS, says that “SIMS Discover will present the data in a highly visual way. Teachers can flick through a carousel of colour-rich graphs and charts to choose how they want the data interpreted, much as they would flick through a carousel of their favourite music album covers on an Apple iPhone.” Teachers can scroll through a list of pupils’ subject results and select grades in English, for example, then drag and drop other criteria into a graph to analyse it. They could easily compare these results against pupils with English as a second language, or those on free school meals, or against those with attendance issues, to understand the reasons behind individual pupil performance so that they can be addressed. The information is displayed using Venn diagrams, student progression lines, bar charts and pie charts, making it easier to spot where issues exist. Teachers are then able to click on the graphs to drill down to individual student names that may fall below expected targets. SIMS Discover is planned for full release next spring. Assuming a successful evaluation by EdICT it will replace SIMS Performance Analysis, so the good news is that it will be part of the standard core SIMS licence.

Microsoft Office software Microsoft Office enables you to process text and manage statistics and data. Text, data and graphics can be combined in a variety of ways. Whatever you create in one part of the system can be automatically used in the others, removing the need for data duplication. Our courses cover Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher. Many delegates will be particularly interested to learn how to create links between SIMS and the Microsoft Office applications. For example, SIMS Assessment data can be electronically imported into Excel, updated from the network and returned to the main SIMS database; Excel links with SIMS data dispense with the need to duplicate information.
