Opinion essay

“A wise traveler never despises his own country.”

Travel is said to be the art of discovery, the art of observing. A traveler is to
be forever aware of what lays around him and to see with his heart more than his
poor human eyes are left to see. But that is not all. I believe a traveler is maybe the
most self-aware out of all of us, He knows truths that have been kept secret from
the humankind since the beginning of time, but not because he is more intelligent
or because he is somehow chosen. Do not dare blame his destiny on faith. He
knows the truth because in his travels, the world stops being a place and it start
being a feeling, and his country will always obey this rule.
To begin with, a traveler will always start somewhere. He will always be a part
of a place. He will always belong somehow to his country, in a sentimental way. But
as soon as he leaves for the first time, he will never come back again, in a way. He
will return, indeed, but his heart will forever and each time be changed. He will have
learned love and lust and loss and this three “L”s will have changed his nature. His
country will never look the same, because it will always be compared to other
places. It will finally become he lost and then found, it will be maybe the exact same
place, but looked at through other eyes. It will be a place to return to and maybe, if
you are really lucky, it will finally become a feeling. Your country will continue to be
flawed and there will always be things that disturb you, but it will also be that
wonderful place that will show you how much you’ve changed. Coming back is not
the same with never leaving and this is one of those truths you have to feel and not
read about.
Also, travel is more about beauty than anything else will ever be. The sole
purpose of traveling is to see beauty in all of its forms. You will learn that a journey
is different from a trip in so many ways. You will learn to see the beauty of the road
ahead and not of the destination. Also, you will learn that beauty is as much of a
feeling as joy and love and sadness. And maybe beauty is the greatest amongst
them, because in a way, it has them all and is made of everything you’ve ever
known. So, it would be a against a traveler’s nature not to find beauty in his own
country. You see it in humans and in the sky and in that feeling of coming back and
realizing that homesickness is not always crushing. Sometimes, it is a faint touch
that you can’t feel until it stops. And most of all, you see it in that feeling of being

awake one morning at 4 o’clock in the morning when everything feels both awake
and asleep at the same time, making you feel both alone and not-so-much. Because
in those moments, you don’t see the flaws. You see the greatness of it all. And that
is something you’re never told. That is something you learn when traveling.
To conclude, a traveler’s country will always be a part of him and he will
always be a part of it. The country in its true nature is not seen, it is felt. A traveler
and his own country are not two separate notions that coexist, but rather a single
one, two parts of a whole, completing each other. A wise traveler would never
commit such an injustice to his own home as not to see it as beautiful at it should
be seen.
