M
cKenney’s designed the HVAC,
plumbing and medical gas sys-
tems for a community hospital
—part of a larger regional healthcare system.
THE CHALLENGE
The owner of this small, rural county hospital
faced significant cost pressure. To ensure the
project would not exceed budget limitations,
the owner instructed McKenney’s to design
HVAC, plumbing and medical gas systems
that performed to minimum building code
requirements—rather than the more costly
standards of the broader healthcare system.
THE SOLUTION
By using its design/build expertise, the
McKenney’s team was able to reduce the cost
of all mechanical systems. For instance, the
team selected direct expansion roof top units
with variable air volume (VAV) and heat/re-heat
hydronic coils for low-cost HVAC efficiency.
Piping mains were kept intentionally small
and VAV flex was eliminated to minimize
seismic restraints labor and material costs.
Additional savings were realized by designing
the duct system with the static regain method
thus minimizing the total quantity of ductwork.
THE RESULTS
The owner’s savings goals were achieved
and the mechanical systems are performing
to specification.
