Invest Early - and Wisely -for College
School is back in session. If you have school-age children, you're probably busy getting them acclimated to another year of hitting the books. But the school years go by quickly, so it won't be long before your kids are ready to head off to college. Will you be financially prepared to help them? It's certainly a challenge, especially given rising costs of higher education. Consider these figures from the College Board: For the 2011-2012 school year, the average cost (including tuition, fees, room and board) was $17,131 per year for an in-state student attending a public, four-year college or university. For a student attending a private fouryear school, the comparable average cost was $38,589 annually. And these numbers are likely to increase in the years ahead. So, what can you do to help meet the high costs of higher education? For starters, you need to save and invest — early and often. And you'll also want to choose investments that are particularly well suited for college. Here are a few suggestions: 529 plan — When you invest in a 529 plan, all withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualigarten through 12th grade expenses and you can place Coverdell ESA contributions into virtually any investment you choose - stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, etc. Zero coupon bonds — A zero coupon bond is priced at a discount to its principal or face value. Oklahoma Main Streeet projects reach milestones
From Oklahoma Main Street
Figures released from the Oklahoma Main Street Center detail program totals and two local community programs hitting private reinvestment milestones in July. Private reinvestment in Kendall-Whittier, an urban Main Street program topped the $50 million mark in July. Kendall-Whittier has been a Main Street Community since 2010. "Kendall-Whittier Main Street is pleased to reach another significant milestone representing the continued growth in our historic district," said Nancy Phelps, Kendall-Whittier Main Street executive director. "We are thrilled that neighbors, businesses, developers and supporters believe that the Kendall Whittier area is thriving and an area with great promise. Their ongoing contributions to our neighborhood are greatly benefiting the future of our community." Ardmore, a Main Street Community since 1989, reached the $40 million mark. "It speaks volumes that we've reached the 40 Million dollar mark of reinvestment in Downtown Ardmore," said Julie Patterson, Ardmore Main Street executive director. "The momentum of reinvestment that's currently under way, as well as being discussed for the future, is truly a blessing for Ardmore as a whole and the Downtown Historic District in particular. Employers, both large and small often look at a city's downtown to gauge the community's spirit. The support this community is giving to downtown businesses is, I believe unique to very few cities." Information gathered throughout the year from the 38 active Main Street Communities including three urban areas includes: • More than $90 million in both private and public reinvestment • More than 138 building façade renovations • More than 41,000 volunteer hours • More than 322 jobs 140 business openings, relocations or expansions Cumulative numbers for the entire statewide program since 1985 include: • More than $940 million in both private and public reinvestment 4,100 façade rehabilitations • More than 1 million volunteer hours • More than 14,100 jobs • More than 4,500 business openings, relocations or expansions "Reaching one million volunteer hours is an incredible achievement," said Linda Barnett, director of the Oklahoma Main Street Center. "The success of the local program is built on the hard work of the many volunteers throughout the state. We appreciate each and every one of them and so do their communities." The Oklahoma Main Street Center is one of 42 state coordinating programs around the nation. Under the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Main Streets across the nation, operate off of the Main Street Four Point ApproachTM including Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring.
