u07d1 List and Coding of Meaning Units
Using your chosen research methodology, take the data collected from your virtual interview
with your fellow learner and list and code the meaning units (expressions). See attached example
for guidance.
Response Guidelines
Respond to at least two other learners. Your responses to other learners are expected to be
substantive in nature and reference the assigned readings, as well as other theoretical, empirical,
or professional literature to support your views and writings.
This interview was conducted with a phenomenological research design. The following response
data was collected from an interview conducted with Lee Calandra Kett.
ResQ1: What is the experience of being an online learner?
The five guiding research questions and one unscheduled probe (#3):
1) How would you describe your experience as an online learner?
2) Describe a positive and a negative experience you’ve had as an online learner?
3) Can you elaborate more specifically on what role "side conversations and direct person to
person contacts" played in your past educational experience?
4) What unique stress factors do you experience as an online learner?
5) What coping strategies do you utilize as an online learner?
6) How would you describe the effectiveness of online education?
List of meaning units:
Self Assertion
Self Assessment
Misunderstood
Connectedness
Planning and Organization

Self Examination
Determination
Internal conflict
-As an online learner, it’s difficult to engage with other learners and teachers given the
socialization limitations. (Internal Conflict, Connectedness/negative)
As a learner, I’ve utilized traditional classroom settings for my educational degrees and found the
side conversations and direct person to person contacts as very fulfilling. (Self
examination/positive, Connectedness)
-On the positive side, easy and convenient assess to the classroom during my free time and at
night allows me to maintain a quality lifestyle. (Planning and Organization, Determination)
-Also, one experience that stands out would have to be the first day of my orientation course.
Given my social nature, I wasn’t able to communicate and ask for direct assistance on how to
access certain resources, how to ensure my financial aid was complete, and how to communicate
in the classroom setting. (Planning and Organization)
-At that point, I knew there were resources such as tutorials but given the anxiety level, I was so
scared of the online learning environment that I withdrew from the course one day after it began!
(Self Examination/negative, Internal Conflict)
-Looking back it was the uniqueness of online learning paired with my fear of failing that
freaked me out. And now I look back on that experience that occurred two years ago and realize
how I overreacted to a situation that was scary because of the lack of expose to online learning.
(Self Assessment)
In a traditional classroom setting, being able to discuss difficulties including stressors was a huge
benefit. (Self examination, Self Assertion)
As I gained friendships with colleagues I was able to verbalize stressors which included time
management and assignment deadlines. (Self Assertion, Planning and Organization)
And it’s important to note how our internship experiences were a way to acknowledge our
successes as professionals. (Connectedness, Self Assessment/positive)
Overall, being able to share ideas and discuss how our course expectations in an informal way
through coffee breaks were very reassuring. (Self Assessment/positive)
For me, the need to be reassured and on the same page that we have similar feelings and thoughts
about a course allowed me to feel part of a group. (Self Assessment, Connectedness)

Worth noting, school events such as food drives and sports events allowed me to feel as though I
was part of something great and that there were visually other students sharing in the same goal
of obtaining education. (Connectedness)
-If there weren’t great experiences from past educational program as a comparison then my
perception of online learning would be very different. (Self Examination)
-The process of online learning seems to still be difficult at times. The anxiousness of starting a
new course every ten weeks isn’t the easiest thing to do. (Self Examination, Internal Conflict)
-Being able to quickly learning new materials with the expectation that you will have to do it all
over again in a couple months is a difficult concept to grasp. (Internal Conflict)
-The quickness of learning classroom expectations and even awaiting for my books to arrive via
UPS can be very stressful. (Internal Conflict)
-Also, although the online learning experience is convenient I’ve learned that, at times, having a
set time to complete work and join in the classroom can be beneficial for my schedule. (Planning
and Organization)
-Over the few weeks, I’ve realized that my life can’t revolve around online learning so I’ve
scheduled weekly meetings with myself so that I can get things done and have a few days where
I’m not thinking about school; similar to traditional classroom programs where study time and
classroom time is expected on the same weekday and time. (Planning and Organization)
-And by sticking to this manner of working, I’ve been able to enjoy my free time without
thinking, processing, and worrying about my discussion posts or discussion responses over the
weekend. (Planning and Organization)
-On a weekly basis, I’ve found myself talking about online learning, the weekend colloquiums to
people unfamiliar with it. With the goal of others understanding that online learning isn’t an easy
degree and can be very time consuming as well. (Determination)
-The online learning experience greatly impacts my personal life including significant others.
(Self Examination)
-Although I have been able to manage my time regarding school work and personal expectations,
the impact positively and negatively affects my life. (Planning and Organization, Self
Examination)
-I am able to manage my time around parties and events held by family and friends which is
greatly appreciated by significant others. (Planning and Organization)
Being able to continue managing strong relationships with family is especially important since
this is a value I hold. (Connectedness)

-On the opposing side, at times, being too flexible allows others to think as though I am available
at any time and that schooling isn’t a big deal. (Internal Conflict, Misunderstood)
There have been times by which others have expected me to attend events and fundraisers yet
when I am not able to attend, there is a negative reaction. (Internal Conflict, Misunderstood)
Negative reactions include the notion that I “don’t want to do it” and if I was committed to such
events than I would make time. (Internal Conflict, Misunderstood)
-Overall, there are feelings of high expectations and the need to be perfect as an online learner
since there are instances where online schooling “should” be an easier experience compared to
traditional programs. (Self Assessment)
-Being tough on myself with the need to be perfect in everything I do as an online learner can be
not only very overwhelming but stressful as well. (Self Assessment, Internal Conflict)
-I feel as though since I choose this nontraditional program for the convenience than I should be
able to put in 100%. (Self Assessment)
-And with this, even though there are high expectations placed on myself there is the feeling of
achievement and pride every time a course is completed. (Self Assessment)
