Thomas and Uber Cup Final Draft
Thomas and Uber cups are two of the most prestigious badminton world titles, which have
been involved by teams from countries. Some of the countries are China, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Korea, Japan, Denmark, Germany, England, United state, Australia, etc. Thomas cup are also
called the World Man’s Team Championship because the game played by men only since the
beginning it was started
1
. Uber cup are also called World Team Champions for Woman
because it played by women only and they go as one team from one country, the same as
Thomas cup
2
. This paper is focus on some changes of rule that was happen after 1984 which give
a big impact to the teams and players. And champion record of each season of the competition,
since the first game was started which also has an influenced to the players and countries.
Thomas cup and Uber cups were consisted of single player match and double player match
since the first competition that was started in 1949
3
and 1957
4
. There were some differences on
how the competitions were happen before 1984 and after 1984. Thomas cup since 1949-1982 in
each game (one country versus one country) were consisted of 9 matches
5
. For example the first
match of the game was single player match then the second match of the game was double player

match, the third part of the match get back to single player match with different players, and the
fourth part of the match get back to double players match with another different players and this
things will continue until the 9 matches were played. Uber cup also do the same things as
Thomas cup the different is since 1957-1981, but the Uber cup was only consisted of 7 matches
in each game
6
. Both of the cups were played once every three years. Before 1984 both of the cup
played in different schedule for example, if Thomas cup was played in January 1978 then Uber
cup was played in March 1979.
After 1984, Thomas and Uber cups were played together at the same year, month and week.
Since 1984 it was played once every 2 years
7
. The number of matches in one game also changed
to 5 matches in one game, which consisted of three single matches and two double matches
8
. The
last time Thomas and Uber cup were played was in 2010, which took location in Malaysia and
until 2010 this new rule were still apply the same. There are impacts that affect the players and
state according to the changes that were happened.
The first one is that Thomas cup become more prestigious than before because now there are
only 5 matches in one game so they must put extra power to win the game. This is also valid the
same for Uber cup. Second all teams in Thomas and Uber cups must have more good strategy
and strong team work. Third is that all of the players must have well concentration, strong mental
and strong physics during the game. This thing also talk about the skill of the players, which
mean the skill of the players must increase to make a strong hit on the shuttlecock, to make a
strong smash, to put a slight shuttlecock on the net, etc. Strong mental explain about how can
they hold out under pressure of their opponent when they keep attacking, it also explain about

how can the players put away their tiredness. For example player B was fell tired, then player A
know that player B was in tired situation, so it will give a chance for player A to strongly attack
player B, so instead that things happening player B must find away to show that he or she still
have a big enthusiasm to finished the match.
Champion records also make an impact to the players and especially to countries. The
champion records of Thomas cup hold by Indonesian which had won for 13 times, in second
place it is hold by China which had won for 8 times and in third place it is hold by Malaysia
which had won for 5 times. Only Denmark, Korea, Thailand and United State that ever become
the runner up, the rest of the countries never made to the final
9
. The champion records of Uber
cup hold by China which had won for 11 times, the second it is hold by Japan which had won for
5 times, the third it is hold by Indonesia and United State which had won for 3 times each of
them and the fourth it is hold by Korea which had won for only 1 time in 2010. Only Denmark,
England and Netherland that ever become the runner up, the rest of the countries had never made
to the final
10
. These results make some positive impact and some negative impact.
The positive impacts are that some country try to keep make a correction to their teams, but
some of the countries lose their enthusiasm to keep fight in the game. They just join with a target
of winning one game and this made the mental of the players become weak (negative). The other
positive impact is that some countries can use this as one of the things that show that that country
is developing well in badminton. The other one is actually by seeing the records the strong
countries can have a benefit like it give more confidence to the players, and the mental of
enthusiasm. It also gives benefit to the weak countries like it can be use as a measurement to

measure what things that they can do to make their country badminton team and the players
become better for the future.
So it is a good decision that Thomas and Uber cups organization change the rule after 1984.
This make the competition between one and another become more tide. If the competition
becomes more tide it will make the quality of every player increasing. So mostly the rule
changes after 1948 give a positive impact to the players, even though it seem it make their work
harder than before. It is also a good thing to have a champion record of the game since the first
Thomas and Uber cups was started. These records will become a mirror where every country that
joined this competition can look at this mirror and make a batter result for the future in Thomas
and Uber cups competition.
