Where to start in Psychology
Whether you want a qualification or not, we recommend you start your studies at Level 1. But choosing the right type of course at Level 1 is very important. Start with our 30 or 60-credit Level 1 courses if you're fairly confident about studying. If you are not sure which qualification you want and are looking to just take the first steps in this subject, we can recommend three good starting points. 1. For a sound basic introduction to psychology we recommend you start with Discovering psychology (DSE141) and Introducing the social sciences - Part 1 (DD131). 2. For a more scientifically orientated approach, try Introducing health sciences: a case study approach (SDK125), followed by Discovering psychology (DSE141). 3. A good alternative if you want to keep your options open would be to do either the 60-credit Introducing the social sciences (DD101) or the two 30-credit courses Introducing the social sciences Part 1 (DD131) followed by Introducing the social sciences - Part 2 (DD132). • Introducing health sciences: a case study approach (SDK125) • Introducing the social sciences - part one (DD131) • Introducing the social sciences (DD101) These are all popular first steps in this subject. You'll learn how to study at university level, get a thorough grounding in your chosen area of study and, in addition, you'll become a confident distance learner. Starting with psychology (Y183)
This offers a gentler introduction to OU study and is an ideal preparation for the other Level 1 courses above. With lots of support and no exams, it will build your confidence and study skills. If you already know that you want a particular qualification – see the descriptions below for advice about where to start. Combined Social Sciences Develop a rich synthesis of knowledge and skills drawn from the breadth of social sciences subjects: criminology; economics; geography; politics; psychology; sociology; and social policy. Computing & IT and a second subject With this flexible joint honours degree specialise in computing & IT and combine it with a second subject: business, design, mathematics, psychology or statistics. Criminology and Psychological Studies Our society is fascinated by crime and punishment. This degree will help you understand the issues behind the headlines. Philosophy and Psychological Studies Explore concepts, theories, methods and debates in philosophy and psychology, relevant to a broad range of careers, including advertising and marketing, social services, administration and management. Psychology If you’re fascinated by human behaviour and what goes on in our brains, this is the degree for you. Open degree The BA/BSc Open Degree is a qualification that gives you a huge choice in terms of subjects and modules that you study to make up your degree.
