About the Institute: Jain Vishva Bharati Institute is located within the campus of Jain Vishva Bharati (JVB) Ladnun, a center of education, literature, culture, social service, meditation and spirituality which was founded in 1970 under the inspiration of late Acharya Tulsi, the saint and scholar,. In 1991, the Government of India notified JVBI as Deemed to be University under Section 3 of University Grant Commission Act, 1956. The Institute continues to enjoy the patronage of Jain Vishva Bharati in its campus. Late Acharya Tulsi was the first constitutional Anushasta (moral and spiritual disciplinarian) of the Institute. Acharya Mahaprajna is its present Anushasta. The Jain Vishva Bharati Institute endeavours to promote, practice and propagate the high ideas of anekant, ahimsa, tolerance and peaceful co-existence for the weal of the mankind. The main objective of the Institute is to provide instruction & training and conduct research & experimentation in the field of oriental learning, shraman culture and other related subjects. It aims at working out a synthesis of the spiritual heritage of ancient Jain scriptures with modern touch. Even though Ladnun is located in arid zone, the campus is full of greenery with parks and gardens. The environment is free from pollution and noise, ideal for studies, research and meditation. About the Department: Jainology has one of the richest heritages of learning and culture, with a tradition of tolerance, catholicity and synthesis. The Department of Jainology and Comparative Study has come into being as project even before recognition of JVBI as a Deemed to be University. After recognition it has completed its 15 years of glorious achievements. It has produced more then 100 PG students. The number of the students of the department who have qualified is also

matter of pride. The department has also the unique distinction of being the first in producing the scholars who are serving the academic institutions of repute in different capacities at national and international levels. The regular Ph.D. programme was ushered in 1996 where as The M.Phil. course was added to the department in the year 2005.. The Department is proud to have produced, so far, 50 Ph.D., 1 D.Litt. and 14 M.Phil holders. The UGC sponsored Refresher Course are being conducted regularly by the Department since 2005. As a major academic exercise, national seminar, international summer schools, workshops, educational tours, lectures by the visiting professors and special talks by the faculty members etc. are being held for enhancing Jain and comparative studies. The writing, editing, translation of the study materials for DEC and of the Jain philosophical classical texts are being done by the faculty members. Need and Relevance of the Seminar: Jainism is an ancient eastern religion. The cardinal principles of Jainism propounded by Lord Mahavira, since twenty-six century ago are based on reverence for life, equality, equanimity and a sense of interdependence. The Jain philosophy has enriched the arena of human thought by its principle of ‘Anekant’ i.e. non-absolutism. The Jain culture has exercised profound influence on the lives of millions of people through their non-violent attitude, universal friendliness and restraint behaviour to have peace in this materialistic world. It is to note that Jain community is well known for its significant qualities of vegetarianism, non-absolutism and nonviolence in every aspect of life. These principles are most relevant in the present era, when human existence is experiencing problems like decaying of values which is giving birth to terrorism, fundamentalism and other related problems. Today the entire world is facing global threats of economic inequality, disparity,

poverty, war, ecological disaster and spiritual despair. Moreover, in the age of globalization, members of remote clans have now become our immediate neighbours, in both actual and virtual realities. With the emergence of such a global village arises need for a dialogue on global ethics and intercultural faith. Traditional ethical systems were developed primarily to deal with human relationships within a particular ethnic, religious and cultural group. In this global village, however, we are more and more interacting with people with ideals, ideas, cultures, religions and customs very different from ours and from each other. In this era, a new paradigm of philosophy appropriate for global ethics, intercultural dialogue and ecological balance would, thus, enable us to deal with such entirely new relationships. The ideas of global ethics, inter-cultural dialogue, equality, equanimity, and human solidarity unfold themselves in the nonviolent, restraint, rational and symbiotic Jain ethics of tolerance, interdependence and reciprocity, and in its realistic and pluralistic postulates which preserve unity and diversity without undermining any one of the two. Although our religious or philosophical traditions are diverse, like the natural environment, we are discovering the global interdependence of human hearts and minds. We need to participate in the modern experience of interfaith encounters and exchanges, which marks a new phase in the human quest to discover our full humanity. Jainism has a lot to share with the people of the world in solving problems arising because of dogmatism, materialism, consumerism, terrorism, science and technology. To think of the solutions of the problems stated and unstated by correlating Jainism with humanities and other social sciences is the aim of this seminar. The Sub-themes:

• •

Jainism and modern, post-modern and contemporary philosophy The role of Jainism in evolving a global ethics (applied, practical, bioethics and environmental ethics) The role of Jainism in developing intercultural faith The role of Jainism in socio-economic conflict Resolution The role of Jainism in human solidarity through Ahimsa (Nonviolence), Anekant and Icchaparimana (limit of wants, consumption and possession)
