MORE LONG-RANGE BOMBARDMENT One game after matching the school record for threes in a game, JMU made it a two-game record with a 15for-21 performance against Rider. That established a new program record for percentage (71.4) on at least 15 attempts. A.J. Davis was 8-for-9 from the arc, the fourth-most makes in school history. % .750 .750 .667 .667 .500 .500 .600 .417 .300 .300 .167 .000 FIRING FROM DOWNTOWN JMU matched its team school records for three-pointers made (16, also a Convocation Center record) and attempted (34) in its loss to Robert Morris. A.J. Davis and Humpty Hitchens each had five threes while Julius Wells had four as the Dukes shot 47 percent from the arc. Davis had five career threes entering the game. DAVIS HITS 20 (TIMES FOUR) After his eye-opening debut with 23 points against Canisius, A.J. Davis followed that with 21 points at La Salle, 22 against Robert Morris and a career-best 29 vs. Rider. He is the first JMU player to begin a season with four 20-point games since Steve Stielper had seven in a row for the 1978-79 season. He is the only player in the program’s Division I history to begin his JMU career with four 20-point games. A TALE OF TWO HALVES Through eight games, A.J. Davis showed a trend for big numbers in the second half after a quiet opening frame. He had 33 total points in the first half and 110 in the second half. He finally reversed that trend in game nine with 17 of his 22 points in the first half at George Washington. TWO PLAYERS POST 20 Davis and Hitchens became the first teammates to score 20 in a game since Denzel Bowles (27) and Julius Wells (23) in a loss at Hofstra in January. More notably, they are the first JMU teammates with 20 in a season opener since Joe Posey (21) and Juwann James (22) in 2006 in a 91-82 loss at Wake Forest. Davis and Hitchens did it again just two games later with Davis posting 22 and Hitchens 21 in a loss to Robert Morris, a game in which they both had five three-pointers. WELLS CLIMBS CAREER CHARTS With 1,395 career points, Julius Wells stands eighth all-time at JMU, entering the top 10 vs. Penn. He needs 306 points to reach as high as third. Wells also needs 15 total games, 15 starts and 531 minutes to match each of the career standards. He stands 74 shy of the three-point field goals record and 83 shy of the threepoint attempts mark, already ranking second for both. DYMANIC DEBUT FOR DAVIS Junior guard A.J. Davis, a transfer from Wyoming, scored 23 points, including 22 in the final 25 minutes of the game, in his JMU debut against Canisius. He is the first JMU player to reach 20 in his debut since Julius Wells with 21 in 2008 against Davidson. His 23 points were the most in a debut since Ray Barbosa with 28 in 2003 vs. Furman. Davis shared honors for best debut in the CAA with UNCW freshman Adam Smith, who had 23 at Maryland. HIGH MARKS FOR HITCHENS Senior Humpty Hitchens opened his second JMU season in strong fashion with a career high of 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting with four three-pointers against Canisius. It was his first 20-point game at JMU and topped his career high of 23 against North Carolina A&T as a freshman at Akron. Playing point guard the first seven games in the absence of Devon Moore, Hitchens had a career-high 10 assists vs. Robert Morris for his first double-double. 12-GAME MONTH With 12 games scheduled in January, JMU will have its busiest month since playing 12 in January during the 1979-80 season. Most recently, the Dukes had 11 games in the month of January during the 2009-10 season. JMU IN SEASON OPENERS JMU is 23-20 all-time in season openers, 5-5 in the last 10 years, and 2-3 in the last five seasons. The win over Canisius was the first opening win for Matt Brady in four seasons at JMU. That followed top 25 losses at No. 3 Kansas State in 2010 (75-61), at No. 16 Ohio State in 2009 (72-44) and vs. No. 20 Davidson in 2008 (99-64). DRIESELLS AND THE DUKES JMU’s Dec. 19 game hosting The Citadel included the return to the Convo of Bulldogs’ head coach Chuck Driesell (198897), who worked on the staff of his father, JMU Hall of Famer Lefty Driesell. The Dukes won or shared five consecutive CAA regular-season titles during his tenure and captured the 1994 CAA Championship, earning the program’s last NCAA tournament bid. Chuck Driesell is in his second season as head coach at The Citadel. FOUNDING FATHERS HOOP IT UP James Madison will meet each of the institutions named for fellow Colonial era contemporaries, all in the same season this year, for the first time since the 1978-79 season. James Madison was known as the “father of the Constitution” and was fourth President of the U.S. Robert Morris (Nov. 22) was the chief financier of the American Revolution. George Washington (Dec. 22) was Commander in Chief of the Continental Army and first President. George Mason (Jan. 14, Jan. 28), like the other three, was part of the Federal Convention to form the U.S. Constitution. Unlike the other three, he did not sign the Constitution for lack of what later became the Bill of Rights, which derived from many of his ideas from the Virginia Declaration of Rights. NOTABLE FIRSTS: • Senior Julius Wells scored the first points of the 201112 season with a three-pointer 1:16 into the game vs. Canisius. • Freshman Enoch Hood’s first basket came on a powerful putback slam at the 13:15 mark of the first half vs. Canisius. • Freshman Arman Marks posted his first JMU points on a three with 15 minutes left to cap a key 7-0 run vs. Canisius. • In his fourth season as a college basketball player, Gene Swindle, a Virginia Tech transfer, played his first official minute of action after subbing in at the 16:09 mark of the first half vs. Canisius. His first collegiate points came at the 6:26 mark of the first half at La Salle on two free throws and his first start came at Penn. SWINDLE ELIGIBLE IMMEDIATELY Transfer center Gene Swindle received a waiver from the NCAA’s rule requiring Division I transfers to sit out a year, instead declaring the former Virginia Tech big man eligible immediately in August. In three years with the Hokies, Swindle was limited to less than one minute of official action due to a severe knee injury. FLORES LEAVES PROGRAM Junior forward Trevon Flores left the program on Dec. 19 for personal reasons. He played in 55 games with 28 starts in three seasons while averaging 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds. MILLEN RULED OUT Guard James Millen was denied his appeal of a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA on Nov. 4 and thus will not appear
