Rabbi’s Message

Cornerstone of Reform Judaism. . . . From the beginning, one of the hall-
marks of Reform Judaism has been its bold and ongoing commitment to so-
cial justice, based on the Prophetic teachings of our Biblical heritage. From
the formation of labor unions, to the Civil Rights Movement, to the rights of
undocumented citizens, to women’s equality, to gay and lesbian inclusion,
to environmental concerns, to help for the poor and disadvantaged, and so
on, the Reform Movement has been out in the forefront of social justice in
every corner of our nation and the world.

RJVNYS. . . . Reform Jewish Voice of New York State, as its website ex-
plains, is “a project of the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism,
modeled after the nationally renowned Religious Action Center in Washington D.C. It takes positions consis-
tent with those of the North American Reform Jewish Movement as they apply to New York State. RJV en-
gages congregations as advocates for progressive social and economic policies at the state level. Through con-
ferences and advocacy programs, RJV interacts with more than 100 Reform congregations in New York State
with nearly 100,000 members. RJV brings Reform Jewish values and the spirit of tikkun olam to state policy
makers through this extensive network of individuals and congregations. . .”

Issues. . . . In the past few years, RJV has focused on issues before the NY State Legislature including: Re-
productive Choice, Sex Education for school children, Marriage Equality for Same Sex Couples, Protection of
Gay and Lesbian Youth, Emergency Contraception, particularly in hospital emergency rooms for victims of
rape and incest, measures to address poverty and homelessness, and the like.

“And Justice For All” . . . . This October 22-24, RJV will be sponsoring a statewide effort within the Re-
form congregations all over the state. RJV has dubbed this Shabbat as “And Justice For All,” and will devote
its efforts to Marriage Equality. Union Temple will be one of the participating congregations in this program-
ming. Resources and materials will be provided by RJV. We will devote our Fourth Friday Shabbat in Oc-
tober to this critical and pressing issue. At present, there are six states in which same-sex marriages are legal:
Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, and California. Astoundingly, and shamefully,
New York is still dragging its feet on this issue, which is, at its core, a question of basic civil rights. RJV is
committed to making our state the next state to pass this critical legislation.

We hope that you will join us for our “And Justice For All” Shabbat, Friday, October 22. Dinner at
7:00 PM, Service at 8:00 PM, Oneg & Program at 8:45 PM. Please plan to be with us for this very im-
portant Shabbat.

-Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman

I am asking you, as an individual, to make a difference at your temple. If your reaction is: How can I
make a difference – I ask you to read the following:
One day an old man was looking down on the beach and noticed a very young boy picking up a starfish and
putting it back into the sea. There were hundreds of starfish lying on the beach as far as the eye could see from
the previous storm. The boy would slowly pick one up and walk down to the beach and place it back into the
water. The old man watched this process for awhile and then approached the boy and said. “Little boy there are
hundreds of starfishes lying on the beach for miles and you are just one little boy. Why do you continue to do
this when you cannot possibly make a difference?” The little boy walked back, bent down to get another star-
fish and placed it in the sea. He looked up to the man and said, “I made a difference to that one.”
Now you can make a difference:
If you can help give out name tags to people at a temple event - that would make a difference.
If you can volunteer to get the desserts for a program at the temple - that would make a difference.
If you can agree to coordinate Mitzvah Day at the temple - that would make a difference.
If you can serve on a committee - that would make a difference.
If you could sit at a sign in desk before an event - that would make a difference.
If you could speak on a topic dear to you on a fourth Friday - that would make a difference.
SO, if you can volunteer, please email me at [email protected] or call me at the temple office at 718-
638-7600 and we can talk.
I promise that whether you volunteer for a one time hour long project or a long term commitment it will be
truly appreciated and it will make a difference to Union Temple and to you.

"One of these days I have to get organized!" How
many times have most of us said that? And how many
times have we looked at the clutter on our desks, in
our closets, and all around us—and given up in de-
spair? Well, despair no longer. The Clutter Clearers
are here, and Sisterhood has them!
Sunday, October 17th, at 10:00 AM, join profes-
sional organizers Karen Guccione and Lisa Reeves for
a discussion on creating peace in the home:
"Tchotchkes, Papers, and Keys on the Table! Oy!
Where Will We Eat?" Even neatniks will want to join
in the fun as, with humor and ingenuity, these dy-
namic experts show us how to clear clutter and
streamline our surroundings, bringing peace and order
into our lives and our homes. As always, our table will
be set with delicious delights, so bring your appetite as
well as your enthusiasm.
We thank all of you who sent in your dues. If it
slipped your mind in this busy season, not to worry.
Your membership checks are always welcome. Just
write one for $36, made out to Sisterhood of Union
Temple, and mail it to the temple office. It's one small
but important step on the road to tikkun olam.

Preschool
Happy Birthday to Preschool!
Union Temple Preschool opened its doors on September
20th, and greeted 81 students—some new and some re-
turning. All in all the students were excited to see their
teachers and to meet their new classmates! This is an ex-
citing year for the preschool, as we are celebrating our
20th anniversary. In 1990 Union Temple Preschool
opened its doors to one class. Twenty years ago, we
were a one-room school house; since then, the preschool
has changed dramatically. We have grown from one class
to five classes overall (with students ranging in age from
two to four years old). In 1990, the professional staff
consisted of a director, who was also the classroom
teacher, and one assistant teacher. We currently employ a
full time director, four head teachers, four assistant teach-
ers, two “floaters” and two part-time administrators. We
also have a consulting social worker, and a music and
yoga specialist. In order to accommodate the growing
enrollment, the preschool added three new classrooms
over the years—carved out from the old kitchen and li-
brary.
We will mark this special year with some exciting
events—one of which was an anniversary celebration
scheduled for Sunday, January 30th. We are currently
looking for volunteers to help plan this celebration. If
your child is a Union Temple Preschool graduate and you
would like to help plan this wonderful event please call
or e-mail the preschool at uniontemplepre-
[email protected].

Religious School
Union Temple + Religious School = Fun
Jewish learning is fun!
Ask the three new teachers in our school
this year. Ariel Brickman, our first/second
grade teacher, studies in the joint program
between Columbia University and the
Jewish Theological Seminary. She says: I
look forward to sharing my passion for
Judaism with your children and instilling
them with a fun and enjoyable Jewish edu-
cation.”
Allison Gutman, our assistant educator
and Kinder Kef teacher, is a candidate for
a master’s degree in Jewish Education at
the Jewish Theological Seminary, where
she will also earn a certificate in Jewish
Early Childhood Education. Allison, who
has worked at Jewish summer camps,
community centers, and synagogue schools,
lives in Fort Greene with her husband Brian.
David Marx, our third/fourth grade teacher, has lived on a kibbutz and served in the Israeli Army. He is currently
working on a doctorate in child psychology and living in Windsor Terrace. He says: I am teaching Sunday school
because I believe education is the best way to convey the beauty and richness of our Jewish tradition.
We welcome back our vatikim (experienced UT teachers) Rachel Dayan, who teaches the older students, and
Tzippy Hazan, our roving Hebrew tutor.
Jewish learning is fun!
Ask one of the three madrikhim (Jewish leaders) who work in our school Sunday mornings. What motivates
teenage boys to get up early on the weekend? Erez Mirer says: I’m working in the Religious School because
the students, the teachers and my partners, Leo and David, are fun and great to be with. I love this environ-
ment and place that I work in.
A reminder that our school’s educational philosophy is focused on experiential learning: creative, interactive,
hands-on programming for children and families. First Friday Family Shabbat is an important part of this
year’s program. We encourage all congregants to join us on the first Friday of the month as our students help
to lead the service.
I welcome all your questions and concerns. Feel free to contact me at [email protected].

summer camp and building models,
he enjoys music. His public debut on guitar

Social Action Update

During Yom Kippur, at the afternoon Social Action
meeting, I mentioned that President Obama had es-
tablished an entity called Organizing for America that
built on the internet organizing he had done during
his presidential campaign. People working for this
entity organize activities throughout the country,
neighborhood by neighborhood. they were active
around healthcare they are active again around the
November elections. Just Google it and you will be
able to participate in a phone bank or other activity.
You will be able to help support democracy.
