Paid Dental Graduate Pathway Opening soon for 2014
Dental Graduates have the opportunity to be part of an exciting professional pathways program in 2014 The Voluntary Dental Graduate Year Program offers selected new graduates not only a full 12-month paid experience, but a $15,000 bonus incentive when they complete the program. 50 Graduates will be selected for 2014, with entry to this valuable program being on a competitive basis. The program is supported by the Australian Dental Association, the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Australian Dental Students Association. It centres on experiences in a range of clinical settings, with on-line curriculum, mentoring and professional support throughout the year. Both metropolitan and regional/remote clinical settings will be available to enable graduates to extend their expertise while addressing oral health challenges. The curriculum has been specifically designed for the VDGYP by the Australasian Council of Dental Schools and offers two streams. Stream 1 is a general one while Stream 2 leads to the primary examination of the RACDS. The curriculum is structured so that 80% of the program is devoted to clinical activity. The remaining 20% of placement time will be allowed for the non-clinical curriculum component, with professional support from an experienced mentor. It offers 60 hours’ Continuing Professional Development. The placements are accompanied by full graduate salary, including annual leave and personal / carer’s / sick leave. Online applications open 11 September and close 9 October 2013 Perhaps the most interesting feature of the program is that it provides young dental professionals the chance to help people and communities in need. More young health professionals are joining Doctors without Borders and similar initiatives to “make a difference” in communities that need them. The Voluntary Dental Graduate Year Program offers a similar vehicle through which dental graduates can gain professional experience and capability while serving those who need their help the most. Indigenous communities, regional and remote communities and urban communities can all benefit from the skill of the participating dentists. Graduates will be matched and placed to meet their interests in balance with the oral health needs of communities. It is possible that a Graduate will work with 2 or more service providers during their graduate year, especially to experience urban, regional and remote clinical settings. A warm welcome will await each participant from service providers and feedback has been very positive from both service providers and 2013 Graduates. General information is available on the website including detail about the application process and documentation. Please start gathering any required information and be ready, as no late applications can be accepted.
