Vehicle Accident and Injury Attorney in Austin, Texas
The motto "Keep Austin weird" is great for a city that seems out of place compared to the rest of
Texas. But not when it comes to traffic, which has been growing increasingly congested over the
past few decades as our city has grown and attracted more visitors and permanent residents.
While Austin may be culturally different, we still face the same high rate of traffic accidents (and
unfortunately, deaths) as the rest of Texas. In fact, a disturbing report shows that in 2012, there
were 78 traffic-related fatalities in Austin! That’s an increase of 42% from the previous year!
Overall, Texas saw an eleven percent increase over 2011, compared to seven percent
nationwide.
In Texas statewide, there were 3,350 traffic fatalities in 2012, and 25,580 in the U.S.

Texas is known for wide-open spaces, which makes for a lot of driving. Over the past few decades,
our large metropolitan cities, including Houston, Dallas and now the fast-growing Austin, have

also become known for their traffic. It is common sense backed up by solid research—the more
time someone spends traveling on a regular basis, the greater their “exposure to being in a
crash.”
Over 70% of Austin employees drive to work alone, with another 10% carpooling. That leads to a
lot of frustrating congestion during rush hour and can contribute to one of the leading causes of
car accidents, serious injuries and, sometimes, fatalities: Aggressive Driving.
Austin’s Car Accident Danger Zones
Accidents were especially prevalent along the dangerous I-35 Corridor, which accounted for 8 of
the leading 25 crash locations in 2012, with 12 of the city’s 78 transportation fatalities taking
place on 1-35 and its frontage roads, according to traffic studies submitted to the Austin City
Council.
Other crash prone areas including many sections of downtown Austin and sections of US 183.The
most dangerous intersection was Palmer Lane and Lamar Blvd., which accounted for 34 of
Austin’s 15,011 crashes in 2012. Other dangerous intersections included Lamar Blvd. and
Rundberg Lane, Airport Blvd. and Oak Springs Drive and the aptly named Slaughter Lane and
Manchaca Rd. intersection.
The numbers for 2012 reflect a 14% increase in the number of traffic crashes over 2011.
Aggressive Driving is Dangerous Driving
Aside from drunk driving, which contributes to about 20,000 Texas traffic accidents a year,
aggressive driving (which sometimes escalates to full-blown “road rage”) leads to several leading
causes of Texas traffic accidents, including speeding, following too closely and failure to yield.
It’s also a symptom of drivers who change lanes frequently, darting in-and-out of traffic. Taken
together, “speeding,” “faulty evasive action,” “failure to yield” and “following too closely” lead
to over 100,000 traffic accidents each year in our state.

Drunk, drugged driving a special concern in Austin
For Austin specifically, driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and medications may be more
of a concern. According to the city’s summary report, alcohol and drugs contributed to 51% of
traffic fatalities in 2012, and an equal percentage of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents were
impaired.
If you or a family member were injured by an impaired driver, you deserve just compensation
and may need strong legal representation to obtain it.
We make no promises, but when you choose to work with us, know that Ross Law Group’s Austin
car accident lawyers have taken many cases involving drunk drivers, earning compensation for
our clients through negotiating skills and by taking cases to trial, when necessary.
Speeding Kills Too
While alcohol and drug-related traffic fatalities spiked in 2012, speed, as always, contributed to
a high percentage of fatalities (32%) and crashes overall. This reflects a nationwide trend. High
speeds cause one-in-three U.S. traffic fatalities, according to information provided by the DOT.
Eating, Drinking, Texting, Watching Videos all lead to accidents
While today’s cars are far safer than those of 30-40 years ago, they also present more
opportunities for distractions. From hundreds of choices presented by satellite radio to minivans
with video screens to drivers who apply makeup while trusting their safety to “cruise control”
and other conveniences, the opportunities for deadly distractions behind the wheel are
countless.
One of the worst offenders is the temptation to text while driving. It’s deadly among teens, but
is creeping into the habits of stressed-out executives and multitasking parents.

At Ross Law Group, we believe texting while driving is one of the greatest dangers on the road
today and the DOT backs us up, reporting “distraction or inattention” was a contributing fact to
as many as 78% of passenger vehicle accidents each year.
