CODEC : Compression / Decompression

DESKTOP COFERENCING
CODEC : Compression / Decompression

Hardware that can convert audio or video signals between analog and digital forms (coder/decoder) Hardware or software that can compress & decompress audio or video data (compression/decompression) Compress (1mb  552kb)

DESKTOP COFERENCING
CODEC : Compression / Decompression

The combination of coder/decoder & compression/decompression. Generally, a codec compresses uncompressed digital data so that the data uses less memory.

(What means by compresses uncompressed data?)

DESKTOP COFERENCING
CODEC : Compression / Decompression • A video codec is a device or software that enables video compression and or decompression for digital video. • The compression usually employs lossy data compression.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
BUSINESS RISK OF VIDEOCONFERENCING

Management’s GOALS for video conferencing must be clearly defined to determine appropriate videoconferencing applications. Increase productivity through real-time interaction between team members, specialists, and management.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
BUSINESS RISK OF VIDEOCONFERENCING

Reduce costing & timing of traveling by holding minor meetings via videoconferencing. A reduction in travel time translates into more time in the office to work on projects.

Time is $$$$$

DESKTOP COFERENCING
BUSINESS RISK OF VIDEOCONFERENCING

Reduce long distance charges by leveraging the corporate WAN for communication needs. Slow computer response time / bandwidth limitation can actually make videoconferencing processes longer than non-automated processes. How will the videoconferencing applications interact with existing systems?

DESKTOP COFERENCING
VIDEOCONFERENCING EXPENSES FALL INTO THREE MAIN CATEGORIES

Hardware • PC Connected to a Local Area Network • Desktop Video Camera • Microphone and Speakers Service and maintenance • IT expenses associated with maintaining equipment • Offering enough bandwidth for the application

DESKTOP COFERENCING
INVESTMENT JUSTIFICATION

Economics Perspective • Savings as of result of reduced air travel • Savings in long distance charges

DESKTOP COFERENCING
INVESTMENT JUSTIFICATION

Soft-dollar economics • Soft-dollar economics include productivity boosts resulting from increased communication among employees and work teams. • You can use the money that you spent on traveling while in meeting to boost up your business performance.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
INVESTMENT JUSTIFICATION

Soft-dollar economics • Taking the individual's salary and multiplying it by the time spent traveling to and attending a meeting. We estimate that each offsite meeting costs an average of RM125 per hour (including salary, airfare, meals, and lodging) for each hour the employee is "unavailable / not at office“. Thus, a meeting that takes two and half days costs the company RM2500.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
Network and Networking Components

The ABC Company (Designs & manufactures Widgets -- What did you expect?) • Corporate HQ in Cyberjaya • Branch Office in KL & Penang • Branch in JB

DESKTOP COFERENCING
Network and Network Components

Network Equipment already in place The corporate WAN consists of T-1 leased lines with dynamic & fixed bandwidth allocation capability. Each T-1 consists of twenty-four 64K channels (24*64k in transfer rate)

(T-1 ? Please refer to cabling discussion)

DESKTOP COFERENCING
Network and Network Components

Each channel is capable of carrying 56K of data with 8K of overhead Channels can be dynamically allocated for conference setup & break down. This occurs when a conference is a scheduled event and the LiveLAN system is to be used.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
Network and Network Components • Processor : Higher in processor hertz, GHz) • 10/100 Mb Ethernet at each location

DESKTOP COFERENCING
Network and Network Components • Each LAN is a Microsoft NT Network • All locations have PRI connectivity to the Internet

DESKTOP COFERENCING
EQUIPMENT COST

One LiveLAN System at each location • Setup in a small board room for scheduled conferencing and small group interaction at each location. • Cost  RM1200 / location for equipment.  RM1000 / location for board room furniture. • Total  RM2200 * 4 locations = RM8800

DESKTOP COFERENCING
EQUIPMENT COST : LiveLAN

LiveLAN is a TCP/IP-based visual collaboration solution for your Windows desktop. LiveLAN brings all the benefits and enhanced communications of full-motion & full-screen videoconferencing to your network.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
EQUIPMENT COST : LiveLAN

By installing the bundled of camera, audio and video codec card, speakers & microphone, you'll have the most in visual collaboration capabilities on your corporate LAN/intranet.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
EQUIPMENT COST : LiveLAN

Because LiveLAN is a hardware-assisted solution, CPU utilization is low. Therefore, unlike software-only videoconferencing products, LiveLAN maintains its frame rate and video quality when other applications are run at the same time.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
EQUIPMENT COST

Intel Desktop Conferencing System • Setup on desktop of team members for everyday interaction between locations and departments. • Cost  RM70 * 10 for each location • Total  RM700 * 4 locations = RM2800 Total Investment in Hardware

RM11,600

DESKTOP COFERENCING
LINE COST

It is estimated that each location will use the LiveLAN System an average of 20 hours per week. Four 64K circuits are allocated to the LiveLAN system for scheduled conferencing • • • • On average each circuit costs RM3 / hour (4 circuits * RM3/hour) * 20 hours/week Equals RM240 / week for line expenses Average of RM12,480/year on line expenses.

DESKTOP COFERENCING
LINE COST

The desktop systems utilize the internet connection and are used on a less formal basis for everyday communication between work group members.
