FEATURES
 Non-cellular organisms

 ‘Head’ is surrounded by protective protein coat – encloses DNA or

RNA
 Range in size from 30 – 300nm  Cannot reproduce on their own, only

within host cells
 Attaches itself to a host cell and takes control

of its reproductive mechanisms
 The cell dies and bursts, releasing new viruses

SPREAD & RESPONSE
 Carrier organisms – mosquitos, fleas

 Atmosphere
 Transfer of body fluids – saliva, sweat, mucus, blood, semen,

vaginal secretion
 Immune system responds to the infection
 Produces pyrogens – cause our body temperature to increase  This slows down the rate of viral reproduction  Continues to fight it until it is eliminated

INFLUENZA VIRUS
 Turns into ‘the flu’

 Symptoms:
 Fever  Chills  Headaches  Muscle Aches  Dizziness  Cough  Sore throat  Runny nose

 Nausea or vomiting
