New restaurant opens in downtown Villa Rica
After working as a chef for 17 years at a luxury hotel chain, Faji
Ababulgu knew he wanted to open his own restaurant. That dream
became a reality on August 21 as he introduced his creation De,
Castella’s to Villa Rica.
The restaurant is located in the former Covalli’s location at 135
Main Street. It is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and din-
ner, and from noon to 3:00pm on Sunday.
According to Chef Faji, “We do not take any shortcuts in prepar-
ing our food. We offer healthy portions of fresh food prepared from
chef-created recipes. Your meal will always be cooked to perfec-
tion with warm, friendly service in clean and comfortable surround-
ings.”
A large, mostly Italian menu is offered with most entree prices
in the $10 range. Pizza and sandwiches are also available, as is a
kids menu. Fresh home-
made soups include
chicken potato, Italian
minestrone, and Vidalia
onion. Six salad choices
are also on the menu,
as well as eight appetiz-
ers including Calamari.
Several unique desserts
include fried cheese-
cake, bourbon pecan
pie, and peach bread
pudding. A lower priced
lunch menu is available
with smaller portions,
and carry out orders
are accepted.
Since the restaurant
is in an historic build-
ing, the atmosphere adds extra enjoyment to the dining experi-
ence. Hardwood floors, and antique lighting fixtures and decora-
tive ceiling tiles give the diner the feeling of stepping back in time.
For information or carry out orders, you may call the restaurant
at 770-456-6363.

Life Insurance: It’s For the People Who Live
Submitted by Amy L. Brown, 228 S. Carroll Rd, Villa
Rica, 678-840-5000, www.amybrown.biz
The death of a family member can be devastat-
ing to survivors both emotionally and financially. Life
insurance can provide cash to help with your family’s
immediate and long-term needs.
* Immediate needs include funeral expenses, unpaid medical
bills and taxes.
* Long-term needs include care for a disabled child or elderly
parent expenses and, in general, the chance for members of your
family to continue to live the life to which they are accustomed.
Life insurance is not for the people who die, but for people who
live. It’s wise to explore options while you are still healthy; health
problems can make life insurance expensive or unavailable. Three
forms of life insurance are most common today:
Term life insurance - this is temporary life insurance for a spe-
cific time period (one, five, 10 or more years). It can provide short-
term coverage on a limited budget. Term insurance, however, costs
more to buy as you get older.
There are two common types of term life insurance:
* Level term: the amount of protection remains the same during
the coverage period.
* Decreasing term: the amount of protection gradually declines
during the coverage period.
Whole life insurance - premiums are generally level with cash
value growth throughout the life of the policy. Cash values can be
borrowed (with interest charged) during the insured person’s life-
time to help meet temporary or emergency needs. Funds borrowed
reduce the death benefit and cash surrender value.
Universal life insurance - this offers many traditional advan-
tages of whole life insurance (such as protection for life), but also
offers flexibility.
Coverage amounts and premium payments are flexible to help
meet changing needs during an insured person’s lifetime (subject
to certain conditions).
When you buy life insurance, you buy a promise of protection
against financial loss caused by death. The promise is only as good
as the company that stands behind it. In today’s marketplace, life
insurance buyers should be concerned about including the finan-
cial strength of the insurer and customer service.

Preparing for the Pandemic Flu
By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab
Center, 770-834-8243, [email protected]
Since my career is in the health care field and I am a Nursing
Home Administrator, I have had the opportunity to receive some edu-
cation on the H1N1 virus and the potential of pandemic flu, in order
to gear up in preparation for the upcoming flu season. Based on what
I have learned so far, no one knows exactly what to expect from the
H1N1 virus, and same goes for the pandemic flu.
What we do know is that every year, the seasonal flu kills rough-
ly 38,000 people in the US. The symptoms of the seasonal flu are
similar to the symptoms of the H1N1 virus. Seasonal flu symptoms
are usually high fever, body aches, sore throat, non-productive cough
(dry), runny or stuffy nose, headache, extreme fatigue, and diarrhea.
Symptoms of the H1N1 flu are fever (90%), cough (84%), sore throat
(61%), body aches, headache, chills, or fatigue. Some have reported
diarrhea (26%) or vomiting (24%). The H1N1 virus may cause a
worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.
Here are some simple things you can do to prevent the spread of
influenza.
• Get the flu vaccine! For most people there are few, if any, side
effects. The flu vaccine is highly recommended for adults over 50,
many children (ask your child’s healthcare provider), those at risk for
complications, including adults and children with chronic conditions,
such as heart problems, lung disease, diabetes and chronic kidney
disease. It is of course recommended for caregivers, professionals
and those at home.
• Wash your hands often. Always wash your hands when they
look or feel dirty, and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
Also wash your hands before and after having contact with someone
who is sick or injured. Wash your hands after using the bathroom and
before preparing or eating food.
Use these simple steps:
1. Wet your hands under warm, running water.
2. Lather your hands with soap.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
4. Rinse the soap off with warm, running water.
5. Dry your hands thoroughly with a clean towel.
6. If possible, use a disposable towel to turn off the faucet.
• No Soap and Water?
Use an alcohol-based sanitizer if your hands are not visibly dirty.
You can use a gel or wipe, but make sure it contains at least 60%
alcohol. First, rub the gel or the wipe all over both hands. Then, rub
your hands together until they feel dry.
• Avoid sharing personal items. These can spread germs. For
example, don’t share towels, washcloths, utensils, toothbrushes, cups,
glasses or straws.
• Cover your coughs and sneezes. If you don’t, you may be helping
to spread germs. Cough or sneeze into a tissue. Don’t have a tis-
sue? Use your upper sleeve. Don’t cough or sneeze into your hands!
Throw away the used tissue. Wash your hands. Also stay at least 6
feet away from people if you are coughing or sneezing, or if they are.
Best advice: Take precautions, and take care of yourself, so that
you can take care of those who depend on you.

The world today can be such a confusing place. It’s hard to
know who and what to believe. Everyone is busy and life keeps
moving at a faster and faster pace. It can be challenging to stand
up for your beliefs. We’re influenced by family, friends, cable, in-
ternet, music, movies and more. As a parent, it sometimes seems
like even the little decisions can be overwhelming.
The good news is that thousands of years ago, King Solomon
wrote hundreds of ideas about the right way to live and these were
collected and placed into the Proverbs – a book in the Old Testa-
ment of the Bible. Every time I read through a section of Proverbs,
I am amazed at the simplicity and profound truth found in these
wise words.
The first 7 verses of Proverbs in the Message Bible sets the tone:
These are the wise sayings of Solomon, David’s son, King of Is-
rael – written down so we’ll know how to live well and right, to
understand what life means and where it’s going. A manual for
living, for learning what’s right and just and fair; to teach the inex-
perienced the ropes and give our young people a grasp on reality.
There’s something here also for seasoned men and women, still a
thing or two for the experienced to learn - fresh wisdom to probe
and penetrate; the rhymes and reasons of wise men and women.
Start with God – the first step in learning is bowing down to God;
only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning.
Wow - sounds like the kind of advice we can all use – right? But
the first thing many people say when it’s suggested that they look
for help in the Bible is that it’s too hard to understand. There are
so many translations of the Bible available today. I even have ac-
cess to 16 different English versions of the Bible on my iPhone for
free. These versions of the Bible don’t change the meaning of the

text; they just use the words and phrases that make sense to us
today. Take some time to read the Bible in a modern version, such
as the Message Bible, the Contemporary English Version (CEV) or
the New Century Version (NCV) and you’ll be amazed at how easy
it is to understand.
The next thing people wonder about is the application of the
Bible to contemporary life. If you take the time to read the Bible
in a version that you understand, you’ll be astounded at it’s rel-
evance to your life and to the world around you. As the saying
goes, there is nothing new under the sun. The things that are
going on in our homes, communities, country and world today
are similar to, if not the same as, many of the things happened
during Bible times.
Here’s an example. You don’t have to search hard to find a
news story related to a robbery, a gang or a violent attack on
someone. This is the sad state about life today in America, but
read what is described in the first chapter of Proverbs: Don’t be
tempted by sinners or listen when they say, “Come on! Let’s
gang up and kill somebody, just for the fun of it! They’re well and
healthy now, but we’ll finish them off once and for all. We’ll take
their valuables and fill our homes with stolen goods. If you join in
our gang, you’ll get your share.” Don’t follow anyone like that or
do what they do. Proverbs 1:10–15 (CEV)
Throughout Proverbs, you’ll find advice related to many aspects
of your life. You’ll find wisdom pertaining to your marriage, par-
enting, business, friendships and many other life choices. Chap-
ters 23, 24 and 25 of Proverbs offer 30 wise sayings for life. Here
are just a few:
Don’t fail to correct your children. You won’t kill them by being
firm and it may even save their lives.
Be wise and follow the right path. Don’t be a heavy drinker or
stuff yourself with food.
Use wisdom and understanding to establish your home; let
good sense fill the rooms with priceless treasures.
There are 31 chapters in Proverbs; you can read a chapter a
day for a month or you can read a few verses a day and spread
it out. Either way, time spent with these words is never wasted.
Use the wisdom found in this book of the Bible to find clarity and
guidance for your life, your family and your home.

If you find yourself lacking excitement about the upcoming holi-
day season this column is for you. We need to shift our focus and
concentrate on the things we can do to make a difference in our
lives and the lives of those we love.
Our homes are a reflection of our values, and a home in disarray
says that we do not respect the things we have been blessed with.
In our recent past when money was sometimes in abundance we
took those blessing for granted and it was easy to let things slide
but now that money is tight we realize not only have we forgotten to
take care of our “stuff” but we have forgotten to teach our children
to do the same. So now we find ourselves challenged with chang-
ing the way we think about our “stuff.”
I recently saw Peter Walsh on the Oprah show working with a cli-
ent who was struggling to let go of an old mixer or something that
once belonged to her grandmother yet it was piled up with other
“junk” in the basement and he told her (not quoting word for word
here) “If it really means that much to you, you would have been
given it a place of respect instead of it being “lost” in a useless pile
of junk.” I have been doing this for quite a while but that statement

LANDSCAPING TIPS

Fall is right around the corner and now is the time to start pre-
paring for core aeration and over-seeding of fescue lawns. Mother
Nature has been hard on fescue due to the heat of the day and the
high humidity at night. The heat dries out the turf and the humidity
brings on fungus, both of which are detrimental to your lawn.
Core Aeration is an excellent way to begin preparing your Fes-
cue for a good growing season next spring. Core Aerating con-
trols harmful thatch, increases root development, promotes overall
plant health, reduces soil problems, and increases water retention.
Core Aeration is an excellent way to prepare your lawn for over-
seeding.
Fescue should be over-seeded in the fall every year. This al-
lows the grass to develop a strong root system over the winter, thus
preparing your lawn to accept spring fertilization and weed control
applications.
The sale of seed is predominate in the spring time however, put-
ting off core aeration and over-seeding until spring does not allow
the turf to develop a good root system. Without a deep root system
in place the summer heat will cause weak seedlings to die quicker.
made an impression on me. I’m afraid we are all guilty of this. Our
“stuff” controls us rather than us controlling our “stuff.”
Like I said earlier THERE IS HOPE and there are things you
can do TODAY to create a sense of order and haven in your own
home.
• Make the bed everyday (children as young as three can be
taught to make a bed—it may not be made the same way you
would do it but that’s ok)
• Load and unload the dishwasher everyday.
• Make sure everyone gets his or her laundry to the laundry
room by laundry day (and recruit help for getting laundry done)
• Create a home for toys using small containers, and baskets.
• Create a Launch Pad near the door where everyone exits
where homework, library books, and other articles will be placed at
end of evening to prevent chaos in the morning.

Thoughts from the Mayor
State of the City
Submitted by Mayor J Collins
In 2009 has been a challenging year with the weak
economy, unemployment in excess of 10% and reduc-
tions in revenues with the property tax digest dropping
$10 million but I am still excited about the possibilities ahead for the
City of Gold. City employees did not receive annual raises and six posi-
tions were eliminated to create a balanced budget of $9.2 million. We
feel the pain along with everyone else.
Construction permits are at their lowest level in over six years with
only 13 permits issued between January and August of 2009 but we
are busy using this time to expand our sewer treatment facilities to meet
future growth. The new 2.1 million gallon capacity West Water Recla-
mation Plant expansion is two weeks ahead of schedule and on target
to come in under the $30.8 million budget. This project will be the most
expensive project that the City has ever undertaken. The added capac-
ity will enable development for another ten to fifteen years. The project
has been designed and built for a Phase II which would add another
2.1 million gallons per day capacity for many more years of growth.
The new plant should be in service by spring of 2011.
Carroll County Chamber of Commerce passed along good news just
a week ago that the City’s North Loop road project has made it on
the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) list. This is a
ten year ongoing project with $1.7 million for right-of-way acquisition
funding beginning in 2012. Both the South Carroll Road and Georgia
Highway 61 intersection improvement project for $4.3 million and the

TE Grant or trails project for $578,813 remain on the STIP list.
Downtown Villa Rica is undergoing major changes with the removal
of several buildings that were structurally unsound and the creation of
a “green” amphitheater that will seat 500 people. This new oasis of
grass, flowers and crape myrtles in the center of Villa Rica will provide
a focal point for family events and continued development downtown.
The project is made possible because Carroll County Commissioners
approved matching SPLOST funds of $400,000 to be used to create
greenspace in conjunction with the amphitheater project.
The City’s Police Department and Municipal Court continue to work
diligently to reduce crime and make our city a safe place to live and
work. During the past year, PD had been reorganized, removing one
level of supervision or flattening the organization. Various key staff
people were reassigned to make the organization more efficient and to
improve communications. PD has begun the second year of clearing
up outstanding warrants with a warrant amnesty program which is cur-
rently underway. PD’s strategy to “serve and protect” is illustrated by
decreases in assaults, thefts and domestic crimes. The Police Academy
continues to attract a lot of citizen participation and a new Explorer Post
has been established.
The Villa Rica Pine Mountain Gold Museum just celebrated its one
year anniversary of operation and attendance continues to exceed pro-
jections as residents and visitors visit “Georgia’s forgotten gold rush of
1826”. The latest New York Times news coverage pitting Villa Rica
against Dahlonega as the first US gold rush has probably helped plus
the Museum has received statewide TV coverage as well as promo-
tional time from Douglas County Chairman Tom Worthan. If you have
not been over to pan for gold and gems or see the working grist mill and
black smith shop, it’s a must.
The VPlex athletic center and convention center has thousands of
visitors every month and meets the needs of children and adults alike.
What a wonderful investment for our community that the mayor and

council made four short years ago. A new stage, rest rooms, conces-
sion stands, additional parking and training facility have been added
this year. The summer camp program was a huge success according
to all the young participants with whom I have spoken and we have
the largest ever enrollment for soccer with 518 this fall and 539 in the
spring of 2009 for a grand total of 1,057.
The July 3 fireworks and music at VPlex was the best ever with an es-
timated crowd of 15,000. The Atlanta Rhythm Section really added to
the enjoyment. The second year of a new music festival became the 1st
Annual West Georgia Hot Air Balloon Race which was a huge success.
Other events adding to the entertainment opportunities in Villa Rica
included the Bluegrass Festival, the Summer Concert Series, Thomas
A. Dorsey Festival and the Gold Rush Festival which all saw increased
participation.
The Villa Rica Library Advisory Board is reviewing plans for expand-
ing the library as utilization of the library continues to increase at an
annual growth rate of 11%. With a patron count of 106,533 for the
last twelve months, guests are often very crowded in the existing facility.
An application to expand the library was made to the State of Georgia
during this legislative session but we did not receive funding. An ap-
plication will be submitted again next year and the Board is looking at
the possibility of choosing a new site.
Financially, the City is in excellent health with reserves of approxi-
mately $9 million excluding $34 million in restricted cash reserves for
the construction of the West Water Reclamation Plant. The year end
financial showed revenues were lower than original budget by approxi-
mately $400,000 for the General Fund (GF). GF expenditures were
over budget $60,783 with net assets increasing almost $4 million. The
new Public Facilities Authority issued $34.9 million in bonds to con-
struct the West Water Reclamation Plant. Water and sewer rates were
increased 5% for the new 3 tier water conservation rate structure.
A 12” water main project down Georgia Highway 61 was completed
in August 2009 at a cost of just under $1 million that connects the Car-
roll County Water Authority’s system to the City so that we will be able
to meet water needs for the City for many years. This water line gives
the city capability to receive the 2.4 million gallons per day from Carroll
County Water and Sewer Authority. Sewer improvements are currently
underway in downtown and a new 12” water line loop will be installed
to the Mirror Lake water tower.
Mainstreet and Downtown Development Authority presented the
Summer Concert Series culminating with an outstanding local band,
“Forty Years Later” and the City’s own, Councilman Woody Holland
on the keyboard. In addition many other special events such as High-
way 78 Yard Sale, Thomas A Dorsey Festival, Gold Rush Festival, Trick
or Treat Downtown Merchants, Downtown Merchants Holiday Open
House, Lighting of the Tree and arrival of Santa draw people downtown
throughout the year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
many volunteers who plan, organize and make these events happen.
Without you these events would not be possible. Thank you so much!
In closing, the most important asset of the City is its employees and
volunteers and I just want to thank them publicly for the efforts that they
put forth everyday to serve the citizens of Villa Rica. These employees
produce much of the water we drink, process the waste we generate,
patch and beautify our streets, repair the water and sewer lines, provide
us recreation and make our homes and businesses safe. Please allow
me to say thank you ladies and gentlemen for your hard work and dedi-
cation to get the job done.
This is an election year and three council positions are on the No-
vember 3 ballot. Good government requires involved citizens so please
exercise your privilege to support the candidate of your choice and get
out and vote November 3.

Parenting
We live in house with four teen-
agers. Years ago we use to say,
“Can you imagine when all of the
children are teenagers?” Well,
the time has come. No more
kid’s meals, no more children’s
department, no more rec. dept. teams. Our world now consists
of driving lessons, Friday night football games and the mass
consumption of a lot of food. As my daughter was preparing
to leave for college I couldn’t help but think, “But I’m not done
teaching her what she needs to know.”
Our goal as parents is found in the book of Proverbs where
it says, “Train up a child in the way he should go.” Clear com-
munication, useful life-skills and unconditional love are char-
acteristics we desire to impart to our children. Modeling these
characteristics is probably one of the best ways to teach our
children. However due to life circumstances it can be a difficult
proposition. I believe it is only through prayer and the study of
God’s Word that we are enabled as parents to succeed in the
challenge of effective parenting.
We have to be intentional with the time we are given with our
children to make the most of it and to enjoy them while they are
still under our roof. So hang in there parents, study God’s Word
and pray hard. - Missy

Short Sleeves or Long?
I am writing this article while having
breakfast in Vienna—Austria not Georgia.
Twice a year I have the privilege of repre-
senting our church training Christian lead-
ers in 3 cities in Slovakia and Czech Repub-
lic. My first trip here was May and, after
reading the weather predictions, I brought
all long sleeve shirts. When I got here the
weather had turned unseasonably warm
and I stayed drenched in sweat all week.
This time, again based on the weather forecast, I brought all short
sleeve shirts and landed with the temperatures in the 50’s! Fortu-
nately, I handle cool weather much better than hot.
My shirt dilemma is a little like life—obviously not as serious—
but a good teachable moment. Jesus taught that we are better
at predicting what will happen with the weather than our future.
Even with all our technology and well-educated forecasters, we
consistently miss the weather. Ever since the year we had all the
hurricanes, we’ve had forecasts of horrible hurricane seasons,
driving up insurance costs for coastal properties and helping trig-
ger a real estate bust in Florida. Yet, those forecasts were terribly
wrong.
So what makes us think we can be good at predicting what life
will throw at us? How many times have we been prepared for
short sleeve weather in life, only to be hit with a early winter blast?
No matter how well we prepare for what we believe life will throw
at us, there are times when we just don’t have the right stuff. In
spite of living a healthy lifestyle we receive a bad report from our
doctor. Even though we followed all the best parenting practices,
a child does something stupid or rebellious. We practice defensive
driving skills and have an accident free driving record and find our
car’s side smashed when we come out of the mall.
The point is, no matter how well we think we have it “all to-
gether,” we cannot know and prepare for everything life will throw
at us. It’s not fair, but that is the way of life in a broken world. The
good news is there is One who is prepared and has what it takes
to make us winners in every situation. The life of faith is one filled
with the presence of a living Savior, Jesus, who has overcome this
world and the things we face. He’s the only one qualified to tell
us how to live life because he’s the only one who beat death. The
Bible never describes the Christian life as a life where we never get
knocked down. It does describe it as one where we always get
back up. We are horrible at predicting the weather, but the good
news is we can handle what life throws at us, even when we are
blindsided, because the One who lives in us is able.
Now, I am off to see if I can buy a cheap jacket that doesn’t
look too cheap

Who’s the Biggest Loser?
Provided by Charles R. Cooley, M.D. of M.D.
Minor Emergency & Family Medicine, 770-456-
0911, 209 Cooley Dr.
Life is fast. Technology is advancing. These
may not seem like harmful statements, but they
are hurting our children.
We all have busy lives taking care of our day
to day activities such as working, running errands,
and taking the kids from here to there. With our
busy schedules, we tend to make bad choices.
Today’s busy families have fewer free moments
to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals. We
tend to opt for fast foods, baked goods, vending
machine snacks, and soft drinks that are generally
high on fat and low on nutritional value. If fact,
one of the largest soft drink manufacturers states
that consumers drink their beverages at a rate of
more than 1.4 billion servings a day.
With the advancement of technology, our kids
are inundated with more and more video games,
computer activities, and more options from the
television. On the whole, kids are spending less
time being active and more time in front of the TV,
computer, or video-game console.
From fast food to electronics, quick and easy
seems to be the mindset of most people. Because
of this, in the last 30 years, a growing number of
kids and teenagers have developed weight prob-
lems. Today, 1 out of 3 kids between the ages of
2 and 19 are overweight. That’s over 25 million
kids.
It’s hard to feel good about your body when you
have too much weight to carry, even for a child.
Being overweight can make you feel embarrassed,
sad, or even angry. Overweight children are also
prone to low self-esteem that stems from being
teased, bullied, or rejected by peers. Kids who are
unhappy with their weight may be more likely than
average weight children to develop unhealthy diet-
ing habits and eating disorders, and may also be
prone to depression, as well as substance abuse.
Overweight children are at risk for developing
medical problems that affect their present and fu-
ture health and can have direct impact on their
quality of life. Some of these problems include
high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type
2 diabetes. They may also experience bone and
joint problems, shortness of breath, liver and gall
bladder disease, and sleep disorders. Risk fac-
tors present in childhood can lead to serious adult
medical conditions like heart disease, heart failure,
and stroke. Preventing or treating obesity in chil-
dren may reduce the risk of developing these con-
ditions as they grow older.
The best way to fight against this constant battle
is to get active. This does not mean that your child
must have a regimented exercise routine, just that
they need to be active doing something: jumping
rope, playing of the jungle gym, playing hide and
go seek, playing dodge ball, or taking the stairs
instead of the elevator. Being active means sitting
less and moving more.
Eating healthy is another part of fighting against
obesity. Remember, our kids don’t buy the food
– we do. We can help our children by buying more
fruits and vegetables and less convenience foods.
We can limit sweetened beverages, even fruit juice,
cook lower fat recipes, and limit the number of
times we eat out.
Children can’t change their exercise and eating
habits by themselves. They need the support and
encouragement of their family and friends. Help
your child find the fun in being active and the vari-
ety of different foods. If we emphasize the benefits
of exercise and foster their natural inclination to
run around, explore, and eat only when hungry
– not out of boredom – a healthy weight should
take care of itself.

Tanner Cardiologist Named Fellow of
American Society of Nuclear Cardiology
Onaje Greene, MD, FACC, FASNC, a cardiolo-
gist on the medical staff at Tanner Health System,
has been recognized as a fellow of the American
Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC).
Dr. Greene is board-certified in internal medi-
cine, cardiovascular disease and nuclear cardiolo-
gy with Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists, part of
Tanner Medical Group. He practices with Christo-
pher Arant, MD, Shazib Khawaja, MD, FACC, FS-
CAI, and William Rogers, MD, FACC. Dr. Greene
joined Tanner’s medical staff in 2006.
The fellow designation recognizes ASNC mem-
bers who have fulfilled both the training and per-
formance requirements for certification through the Certification
Board of Nuclear Cardiology.
“This is a wonderful honor for Dr. Greene and our entire cardiolo-
gy program,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health
System. “Dr. Greene has long been a tremendous asset to Tanner’s
cardiac services, and this designation speaks to his unyielding work
to move our cardiac program to the next level.”
ASNC is a professional society that provides members with a va-
riety of continuing medical education programs related to nuclear
cardiology. To become a fellow, a physician must be a member of
ASNC for two consecutive years, be board-certified in nuclear cardi-
ology and have letters of recommendation from three nuclear cardi-
ology professionals.
Nuclear cardiology has been pivotal in the noninvasive assess-
ment of cardiovascular disease. It uses noninvasive techniques to as-
sess blood flow, evaluate the ability of the heart to adequately pump
and supply the body with blood and provide images of the size and
location of heart attacks. This state-of-the-art technology allows phy-
sicians to make diagnoses and better guide treatment for patients
with cardiovascular disease.
Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists have offices in Carrollton,
Villa Rica and Bremen. For more information, visit www.heartand-
vascularspecialists.org or call 770-836-9326.
Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow
By Justin B. Rich, MPT, CSCS and Eric
Morante, PT, MBA, CSCS of Accel Physical
Therapy. Accel has 2 convenient locations
in Villa Rica at Mirror Lake Boulevard and in
Douglasville
We often have new patients come into our clinic with questions
about tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. They are both causes of
pain to the elbow joint. The medical term for tennis elbow is lateral
epicondylitis and it occurs on the outside portion of the elbow. The
medical term for golfer’s elbow is medial epicondylitis and it occurs
on the inside portion of the elbow.
Although participation in tennis or golf may cause the onset of
tennis or golfer’s elbow, these terms are actually misnomers in that
in a majority of cases, people that suffer from these symptoms do not
participate in either sport on a significant basis. Instead, the primary
causes of these symptoms are repetitive motions involving the arms
such as pushing, pulling, and twisting. Other causes may include a
poor work station set up, improper lifting technique, and repeated
shock and vibration to the elbows.
Epicondylitis is caused from adding stress on the muscles of the
forearm that pulls the muscle tendons away from their attachment
at the elbow. When this excess tension occurs, small tears occur in
the tendon causing bleeding and inflammation to accumulate over
the tendon’s attachment at the elbow. Early signs of lateral or medial
epicondylitis are tenderness to touch, pain with lifting and gripping,
and tightness in the forearms. As the condition worsens, individu-
als will experience more pain with less stressful activities, decreased
strength with gripping and lifting, and shooting pains in the elbow
and forearms.
Treatment for epicondylitis involves rest from the offending activity
and the use of ice and anti-inflammatory medicine. The use of an
Medical Directory & Guide

Villa Rica News & Views 47
elbow brace can help to alleviate the stress on the elbow. Persisting
symptoms may require a visit to the doctor for corticosteroid injec-
tions and/or a referral to a physical therapist. In rare cases, surgery
may be required.
Preventative measures to avoid medial or lateral epicondylitis may
include avoidance of repetitive activities that overtax the elbows,
wrists, and forearms or alternating the use of right and left hand for
such activities. Using proper lifting techniques i.e. palm up versus
palm down when carrying luggage or grocery bags. Proper work
station set-up i.e. use of wrist and elbow supports when working on
the computer. It is also important to maintain good strength and
flexibility to the wrist, elbow, forearm, and shoulder muscles.
