Olly Racela in Bangkok Situation Analysis
The case is about Olly Racela, a confident and ambitious woman who after one year of the completion of her graduation takes up a job in Bangkok, Thailand, seeking a more satisfying employment. She visited Bangkok as a tourist before taking up her current job and was fascinated by the Thai culture. Her love for travelling and exploring different places and her emphasis on being independent were also important factors that led her into taking the decision to work in Thailand. Moreover, as a single woman, there were no obligations that could tie her down to staying in US. She soon realizes that working in Thailand is far different from working in US. She faces a lot of issues like commuting daily on congested roads, pollution, high living costs and language barriers. She also faces quite a few work related issues like little autonomy in making decisions, unable to get her work done timely and lower compensation than her male counterparts. Although these issues make her more tolerant towards others, she begins doubting her decision to move to Bangkok. Sensing her disappointment, the management of the company encourages her to take part in an expensive training program sponsored by the company. This may not only enable her to draw a higher compensation but may also help her get more challenging assignments. This will also involve Racela signing a contract to work for the firm for three more years. To complicate matters further, she receives a job offer from Hawaii, her home city, which would take her to her family and she would not have to deal with issues like congested roads, cultural issues, and pollution, besides others. But again, this job involves a few uncertainties as well. All this leaves her in a fix as she tries to decide the future course of action.

Olly Racela in Bangkok Evaluation of Options
1. Take up the job offer in Hawaii ± Taking up the job offer in Hawaii may lead to advancement in her career and may involve her assuming more responsibilities. Cultural issues will no longer be a concern as she would be working in her own country. She may be able to maintain a healthy work-life balance in US and will have a safe environment to work in. Financial stability may be achieved while working in US as the compensation is comparatively higher in US than Thailand.

2. Stick with the current job in Bangkok and undergo the management

development program - If Racela decides to stick with her current job, her career may
advance forward with her undergoing the management development program which may lead her into getting more challenging assignments and a higher compensation. Her struggle to fit into the Thai culture may continue further. Safety is another area of concern. She may not be able to achieve a perfect work-life balance as her personal life is non-existent currently and there are chances that this may continue. Financial security is not much of a concern as she has already saved a substantial amount and the purchasing power of the Thai currency, Baht is also relatively high. Moreover, she knows that she can count on her parents for financial support if the need arises. Although the constant decline in the value of the Thai currency relative to the US dollar may seem to be an issue.

3. Stick with the current job but don¶t undergo the management development
program ± Racela may also keep her current job while at the same time she may not
join the management development program. By doing this, she may give another try to her job in Bangkok and could try to further adjust with the Thai work culture and achieve something substantial. She is anyways financially secure with her current job and has saved US $ 15,000 which may hold her in good stead in difficult situations. This would also give her the freedom to quit the job and move to US whenever she feels like and would not force her to sign a contract to work for a certain duration in Bangkok. Although her concerns for safety and maintaining a work-life balance remain.

Olly Racela in Bangkok Recommendation
After analyzing both the options against all the criteria of evaluation, Option 1 seems to be the best option i.e. Racela should quit her current job in Bangkok and take up the job offer in Hawaii as the executive director of the eco-tourism start up.

Action Plan
Racela should talk to the management of her current organization and convey to them her decision to quit the job. She should then submit her resignation from the current job and take up the job offer in Hawaii. She must also try to learn more about the new job to get all the associated uncertainties cleared and prepare for the challenges that might come along with her new job.
