July 2013

From the desk of the fair manager. . .
Wow….where does the time go. I can’t believe the 2013 Fair, which is going to be the 15th Fair at the Washington County Fair Park & Conference Center, is just around the corner. I was reminiscing this morning with some of my Board members about walking the grounds many times with mud and clay over our shoes. Many of them replied “I remember it all too well”. But the end results transformed into one of the top facilities in the State of Wisconsin. The grass is plush, the ponds are full and the trees have grown that they are offering shade. I began building my little community or village a week prior to opening the Fair. We have areas on the grounds and buildings where our guests can enjoy shopping, entertainment, food, livestock, competition, education and relaxation. We provide our fair participants opportunities and services that they need to operate. We have banking services, utilities, cleaning and hospitality. As I lay out my plan for the 5 day event (6 if you count the early opening on Tuesday) I need to concentrate on utility needs for vendors, booths, displays and overall exhibits. Ground surface is important as a dry sunny day can change into a small pond with just an inch of rain. Animal exhibits need a clean wash area and prep area. Educational signage has become a priority to make visitors aware of risks a accessible hand washing facilities. Fair guests need accessibility. They need to park a car, motorcycle, bicycle or a stroller. They need to be able to walk, roll or crutch their way through the gates to experience this event. They need signage to be able to find exhibits, food court, and entertainment. Shade, seating and air conditioning are high priorities for our guests. My plan has been completed and I am ready to implement it. In a very short time, the vendors and carnival will be arriving, 4-H’ers and FFA’s will be bringing in their exhibits for judging and before we know it, fireworks will be exploding in the sky reflecting the opening of the 2013 Washington County Fair. “133 acres of fun”…. I am proud to be a part of this wonderful event and facility. Sandy Lang, Fair Manager/Executive Director

Youth Build Life Skills at the County Fair
Washington County 4-H members keep busy during the week of the county fair. If you see a 4-H member at Washington County Fair Park, they are usually engaged in some sort of task or duty. The 4H slogan is “Learning by doing.” By digging in and actively participating in county fair opportunities, 4H youth are building life skills. Life skill development starts early as youth prepare for the county fair. They use goal setting skills as they identify what they will enter as exhibits. Youth then employ self-discipline as they set a timeline for creating projects and raising livestock. Throughout the year they are planning and organizing so that they will be ready when entry day arrives. During judging, youth are strengthening their communication skills as they speak to an adult judge and articulate what they have learned while working on their projects. They also have to use teamwork skills to set up exhibit areas and keep stalls clean. What if their time in the exhibit hall or show ring doesn’t go as planned? Then the youth exhibitor must practice problem solving skills to adapt to the situation. The county fair is also a significant opportunity for youth to grow as citizens. When they volunteer to serve refreshments at the 4-H food stand or lead hands-on activities at the 4-H Action Center, they are contributing to a group effort. Fairgoers can enjoy the benefits of delicious, fresh food or fun family activities while 4-H youth develop marketable leadership skills. Even after everyone has packed up and gone home, the skill development continues. 4-H youth are expected to use record keeping skills to document how they did at the fair. Using reflective self-awareness, they think about what they have learned and what they may do differently next year. The cycle of skill development is ongoing. To find out more about 4-H Youth Development and the opportunity to develop life skills through year-round experiential learning, contact the Washington County UW-Extension Office at (262) 335-4478. “Make it Work”
This year’s 4-H Style Show at the Washington County Fair will include members who were judged in June at the 4-H Clothing Revue. On Wednesday evening of the fair, July 24, on the Ziegler Building Stage participants will show off their fashions for 2013 to the theme of “Make It Work”, the catchphrase popularized by the reality TV show “Project Runway”. Last year’s state fair delegates, Emily Schulz and Katrina Pedrick, will narrate the show beginning at 6 pm. All members were judged in June and those receiving blue ribbons were eligible for judge’s choice awards. A first year clothing 4-H member will receive the Anna Lhotka Memorial Award and an advanced clothing member will receive the Laura Wolf Memorial Award. Teen Choice Awards will also be handed out. The Teen Choice Awards are selected by the participants. These awards are kept secret until the fashion show announcements are made. 4-H Clothing members work to construct garments for this event, but judging concentration is less on garment construction than on the selection of pattern, fabric, accessories and how the garment looks on the individual. Of course the garment construction must provide the right “fit” to prevent wrinkles in the wrong places and assure that the garment is not too small or too large. Karen Alderden judged this year’s Clothing Revue event. 4H volunteer leaders, Marilyn Nadelhoffer and Susan Jahn, along with Carol Bralich, Family Living Educator, organized the event. Two senior members are selected to represent Washington County at 4-H State Fair the Wisconsin State Fair Clothing Revue Clothing Revue in August. The delegate 2013 State Fair delegates are Emily Schulz Emily Schulz of the Hi-Lite Happy Workers 4-H Club and Bethanea Kottwitz of the Thompson Irish Settlers 4-H Club. Other 4-H members participating included: Lauren Cybell of the Bender Badgers 4-H Club; Emily Huiras of the Farmington 4-H Club; Autumn Morrow, Anna Pedrick, Kim Reinders, and Elizabeth Truckenbrod of the Hi-Lite Happy Workers 4-H Club; Julia Greenhow of the Jackson Explorers 4-H Club; Cecilia 4-H State Fair Dax and Rebekah Stege of the Clothing Revue St. Lawrence Eager Beavers 4-H delegate Club; Elizabeth Rhinehart of the Bethanea Thompson Irish Settlers 4-H Kottwitz Club; Kayli Thull of the Wayne Crusaders 4-H Club. Congratulations to all for doing such a great job!

Submit Your Bid at Silent Auction
An alarm clock rings late on the last day of the Washington County Fair. That’s it! An announcement is made that no more silent auction bids will be accepted. The committee hands over the auction items to the winning bidders as they pay. During the spring and summer, 4-H alumni and 4H friends have been asked to donate items. Auction items vary from handcrafted wreaths, baskets, wooden planters, plants, antiques, certificates for services or museum visits, and much more. They are displayed in the room on the east end of the Ziegler Building. Each item has a paper attached for your name, phone number and bid amount. You too can come to the fair and bid on the items! The Washington County 4-H Leaders Association will use the proceeds from the auction for 4-H camp scholarships, leader training, leadership workshops for youth, music and drama programming, and other educational opportunities. Fairgoers can submit bids throughout the fair until Sunday afternoon. The highest bidder will be notified via phone call and can pick up their item(s) on Sunday evening or at the Washington County UW-Extension Office the next day in the Public Agency Center, 333 E. Washington Street, Suite 1200 (across from the Washington County Courthouse).

Face-to-Face Judging at the County Fair
Have you ever wondered why one project at the County Fair received a blue and another received a red? Did you find yourself saying, “These projects look the same. Why did this one get a higher placing?” The reason is simple. The project is judged on both its construction and the knowledge that the youth project member can share about the project. The project member is expected to explain to the judge how they made the project, what they learned and what they might do differently. This one-on-one conversation allows the judge to ask the member questions and find out what, exactly, the member did. At this point, the judge considers the project and the member’s knowledge of making the project in determining what placing the member will receive. The member is not competing with others. You might ask, “What is the responsibility of the judge?” It is the judge’s responsibility to examine the exhibit, talk to the member about their exhibit, provide the member with positive feedback/suggestions, and give the article a placing. Face-to-face judging is an excellent way for project members to develop communication skills, increase their self-esteem, and self-confidence. The face-to-face judging schedule for the Jr. Classes at the 2013 County Fair is as follows: Monday, July 22nd (Pre-Fair Judging) 12:30 – 7:00 p.m. Arts & Crafts, Music, Drama, Clowning, Cloverbuds, Exploring, Youth Leadership, Club Scrapbooks, Photography, Woodworking, Computers, Electricity, Mechanical Sciences, Vet Sciences, Natural Sciences, Knitting, Crocheting, Home Environment, Child Development, Cake Decorating, Clothing, Communications, SelfDetermined, Health/Political Science, Rocketry. Tuesday, July 23rd 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Foods & Nutrition. Wednesday, July 24th Goats – 8:00 a.m., Sheep – 12:00 p.m., Gardening/Crops – 12:30 p.m., Flowers – 12:30 p.m., Model Horse – 2:00 p.m., Pot Belly Pigs – 1:00 p.m., Swine – 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25th Beef – 8:00 a.m., Poultry – 9:00 a.m. Friday, July 26th Rabbits/Cavies – 8:00 a.m., Dairy – 9:00 a.m., Horses - 9:00 a.m., Cats – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 27th Llamas – 9:00 a.m., Horses - 9:00 a.m. Face-to-face judging is done only in the junior division. Open class uses the Danish system. What are the advantages of face-to-face judging? Youth can be more creative and imaginative. They are able to exhibit anything they design because their article is not judged against other articles, but is on its own merit according to a standard. Members also learn from evaluating their own exhibits.

Dairy Cows: They All Look Alike, or Do They?
By Don Mier UW Extension Dairy Educator, Sheboygan County How many times have you gone to the Washington County Fair and watched dairy cattle being judged only to wonder what the judge is looking for when placing the cattle. Why is the top animal in the class better than the last placed animal? If you’re a dairyman the answer is pretty simple, the judge is looking at all of the physical traits that equate to greater milk production, longer cow life (longevity), and better cow health. A mature Holstein cow will weigh about 1,400 pounds and may milk over 12 gallons of milk per day. The cow needs to have good feet, properly placed legs, and a strong back to carry her weight. Her milk production will require that she eats and digests huge amounts of forage and grain each day, thus she has to have a lot of capacity not only for her digestive organs but also for her heart and lungs. And she needs to have an udder that has enough capacity to hold the milk, and also good udder placement. Those are the high points of cow evaluation, there is much more that goes into judging cattle. The nice thing about evaluating dairy cattle is that there is a uniform dairy score card that is used to evaluate all dairy breeds. This score card is called the Dairy Cow Unified Scorecard and its easy to find with a little searching on the internet. Bring a card with you when you watch the dairy show at the Washington County Fair on Friday, July 26th starting at 9:00 a.m. in the Farm Progress Arena.. Watching a dairy cattle show can be a fun learning experience. Take a look at the scorecard, watch a class being judged, pick out what you might think is the winner and see if you agree with the judge.
