“Celebrating 100
Years of 4-H In Style”
This year’s 4-H Style Show at the Washington
County Fair will include members who were
judged in June at the 4-H Clothing Revue. On
Wednesday evening of the fair, July 23, on the
Ziegler Building Stage participants will show off
their fashions for 2014. Last year’s state fair
delegates, Bethanea Kottwitz and Emily Schulz,
will narrate the show beginning at 6:00pm. All
members were judged in June and those receiving
blue ribbons were eligible for judge’s choice
awards. Two first year clothing 4-H members will
receive the Anna Lhotka Memorial Award and an
advanced clothing member will receive the Laura
Wolf Memorial Award. Teen Choice Awards will
also be handed out. The Teen Choice Awards are
selected by the participants. These awards are kept
secret until the fashion show announcements are
made.
4-H Clothing members construct garments for
this event, but judging is focused on the selection
of pattern, fabric, accessories and the overall look
of the garment on the individual. Of course the
garment construction must provide the right “fit” to
prevent wrinkles in the wrong places and assure
that the garment is not too small or too large.
Chris Kniep judged this year’s Clothing Revue
event. 4-H volunteer leaders, Marilyn Nadelhoffer
and Susan Jahn, along with Carol Bralich, Family
Living Educator, organized the event. Senior
members are selected to represent Washington
County at the Wisconsin State Fair Clothing Revue
in August. The 2014 State Fair delegates are
Katrina Pedrick and Kim Reinders, both from the
Hi-Lite Happy Workers 4-H Club. The 2014 State
Fair alternates are Anna Pedrick from the Hi-Lite
Happy Workers 4-H Club and Abigail Doak from
the Badger Boosters 4-H Club. Kim, Anna, and
Abigail will be attending this learning experience.
Other 4-H members participating included:
Lauren Cybell and Hannah Koskovich of the
Bender Badgers 4-H Club; Mariah Mihm of the
Hartford Helping Hands 4-H Club; Mayda Conrad,
Emily Schulz, and Elizabeth Truckenbrod of the
Hi-Lite Happy Workers 4-H Club; Julia Greenhow

Where the
Action Is
Prepared by Megan Buehler
Washington County UW-Extension
4-H Youth Development Staff Assistant
There is a lot going on at the Washington County
Fair, but one place where the action never stops is
at the 4-H Youth Development Action and
Promotion Center inside the Ziegler Family Expo
Center.
Stop by to spin the wheel and answer a question,
pet a rabbit, or get creative making an art project.
There is always something happening and new 4-H
youth and adults to talk to. Come check-out what
4-H has to offer and find out about the over 80
projects (areas of interest youth explore in hands-
on long term learning experiences) youth can do in
4-H and how to get involved.
If you aren’t able to stop by at the fair, come to
the 4-H Open House on Tuesday, August 19th,
4:30-7:30 p.m. at Washington County Fair Park in
the Small Animal Building.
Washington County 4-H Youth Development is
open to all youth from K-5 through 13th grade. 4-
H is part of the University of Wisconsin-Extension,
and 4-H programs are delivered in partnership with
the United States Department of Agriculture and
federal, state and local governments!

By Marv Espenscheid
Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association
Most of what I really know about how to live
and what to do and how to be, I learned by showing
livestock. Here are some of the many things that I
have learned.
I have learned to be honest about my animal’s
bloodlines, birthdates and other data. It doesn’t
feel-good inside when I lie about these things.
Being truthful gives me a clear conscience.
I have learned to cooperate with those around
me. By getting along with other exhibitors, leaders,
parents and show staff, I find that my show
experiences are much more pleasant. By sharing
and being considerate of others, I find people are
nicer to me.
I have learned to treat my animals humanely.
Sometimes, I try to put myself in their “hooves.” I
remember they need good food, clean water and a
comfortable environment. I also remember that I
do not like to be hurt, so I don’t want to be rough
on them, even though they might try my patience at
times.
I have learned to watch those around me to learn
better grooming and showmanship techniques.
All I ever really needed
to know I learned by
showing livestock

This will help me improve my skills in the future. I
have learned that working with livestock is a
continual learning process.
I have learned to appreciate all that people do to
help me along the way. Aword or note of thanks is
important. I like to be thanked when I help out as
well. I have learned that to have friends, you have
to be a friend. Working with livestock is more
enjoyable when done with friends.
I have learned to be responsible for the care of
my own animals. If someone else does the work for
me, it is really not my project at all.
I have learned that I will make some mistakes
along the way. I will accept the fact that I need to
learn from the mistakes I have made, so they don’t
happen again.
I have learned that it is a good quality to have
things done on time, such as meeting project
deadlines, being in the show-ring on time. I do not
like to wait for a late animal, and people should not
have to wait for me.
I have learned that it is important to strive to
win, but I realize that is not always going to
happen. I remember to congratulate others, and I
hope they will do the same for me.
There are many things to learn and many things
to remember as I proceed through the years of
raising and showing livestock. Everything you
need to know is in there somewhere.

A New Kind of Cow
Prepared by Megan Buehler
Washington County UW-Extension
4-H Youth Development Staff Assistant
There have always been cows at the Washington
County Fair but this year fairgoers should look for
a new kind of cow. They will see cows of all sorts
of colors, cows wearing pants, and even a cow
riding a wave on a surfboard.
This new herd of 14 cows was created by 14
different 4-H Youth Development community
clubs that participated in the Washington County
Dairy Promotion Committee’s revised contest for
June Dairy Month. Instead of creating a window
display to share facts about Wisconsin dairy, clubs
were challenged to add a dairy related message to
an approximately 4 foot tall and 6 foot long
plywood cow. Additionally, they decorated the cow
and some even added accessories.
Youth had a lot of fun creating their cows and
gained valuable life skills like cooperation,
planning, and decision making. They also got to
utilize and enhance their drawing and painting
skills and learned about the dairy industry.
Youth worked on their cows in May and early
June and put them on their first public display at
Breakfast on the Farm on June 14. Community
members voted for their favorite cow by placing a
kernel of corn in a milk jug in front of the cow they
thought was best. The cows then went “out to
