#19/23 WASHINGTON vs. ILLINOIS UW Heads To Windy City To Face Illini At Soldier Field
THE GAME: The Washington football team returns to action this Saturday in Chicago as the Dawgs take on Illinois at Soldier Field. The game will air live on the Big Ten Network and kicks off at 5:00 p.m Central Time/3:00 p.m. Pacific. The Huskies, 1-0 after a season-opening, 38-6 win over over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, had last Saturday off. After entering the rankings the week before, the UW improved to No. 19 in the Associated Press top 25 and No. 23 in the coaches’ poll. Illinois is 2-0 after wins over Southern Illinois and Cincinnati to open the year. The Illini received votes in both of this week’s polls. The Huskies’ ranking of No. 19 in the AP poll is their highest in that ranking since the UW held the No. 18 spot in October of 2003. Washington and Illinois will be squaring off for the 10th time ever, but for the first time since 1971. The two teams have played in eight regular-season games, as well as in the 1964 Rose Bowl, which Illinois won. After the trip to the Windy City, the Dawgs return home for two straight Saturdays, facing Idaho State in their final non-conference game before opening Pac-12 play vs. Arizona on Sept. 28. QUICK SNAPS: In the Huskies’ season-opening win over then No. 19 Boise State, the UW held the Broncos without a touchdown for the first time since 1997 ... the UW (85) and BSU (88) combined for 173 scrimmage plays in the game ... UW QB Keith Price broke the school record for career touchdown passes in the Boise State win ... his two vs. the Broncos gave him 56, moving him in front of Cody Pickett (55) ... seven true freshmen played in the season opener: WR Darrell Daniels, DB Kevin King, DE Joe Mathis, WR John Ross, WR Damore’ea Stringfellow, PK Cameron Van Winkle and DB Trevor Walker ... an additional seven UW players saw their first-ever collegiate action vs. the Broncos ... TB Bishop Sankey rushed for 161 yards vs. Boise State, his fifth 100-yard output in the UW’s last six games ... not counting specialists (kickers, punter, snappers, holders, returners) the UW has 36 players who have started at least one game in their career, including eight offensive linemen ... the Huskies have played just one game, of course, but they currently rank No. 7 in the NCAA in total offense, No. 6 in scoring defense and No. 4 in third-down conversions. TELEVISION: The Washington-Illinois game will air live to a national audience on the the the Big Ten Network with Eric Collins (play-by-play), J Leman (analyst) and Evan Fitzgerald (reporter) providing the commentary. The Big Ten Network will also air repeated broadcasts of the game. Check your cable/dish listings for more. RADIO: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KJR 950-AM, will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 18 Northwest radio stations. Longtime play-by-play man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise Woodward. WASHINGTON vs. ILLINOIS (at Soldier Field, Chicago) Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 • 5:00 p.m. CT / 3:00 p.m. PT

WASHINGTON at ILLINOIS • SOLDIER FIELD • SEPT. 14, 2013 • 3:00 P.M. PT/5:00 P.M. CT (BIG TEN NETWORK) THE HEAD COACH: A new era of Washington football begins this fall when the newly-renovated Husky Stadium opens its doors on Aug. 31. The 93-year old legend has undergone a thorough rebuild that will make it one of the grandest, most beautiful sports venues in the nation. With the new stadium come heightened interest and energy around the Husky program as the Dawgs look to springboard into yet another era of on-field successes. Poised to take them there is fifth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, who has assembled the pieces – on offense and defense, in recruiting and now in facilities and infrastructure – to put the Huskies back on top. Since arriving at the UW after the 2008 season, Sarkisian has taken the Dawgs from their lowest of lows to three bowl games in his four seasons. Now his task is to continue that upward movement. In 2012, the Huskies posted a 7-6 overall record, going 5-4 in Pac-12 play, despite facing one of the nation’s most rigorous schedules, which included a sevengame stretch that included matchups with five teams ranked in the top 11 in the AP poll. Washington posted a pair of memorable victories over top-10 foes, beating 8thranked Stanford, the eventual Pac-12 champs, 17-13, on a Thursday night in Seattle. In the eighth week of the season, the Dawgs handed seventh-ranked Oregon State its first loss of the season, 20-17, in another down-to-the-wire win. For the season, the Huskies made considerable strives on defense, cutting nearly 100 yards and more than 11 points per game off of its per-game average from the previous year. On offense, the UW had its fourth straight season with a 1,000-yard rusher as sophomore Bishop Sankey ran for 1,439 yards. The 2011 season, Sarkisian’s third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-and-coming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the team’s third-down percentage improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. In 2010, Sarkisian’s second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl season’s top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didn’t think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisian’s Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nation’s most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (200203) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans’ staff, the team posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Page 2

Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). He was a first-team Junior College All-America selection as a sophomore and earned allconference honors in 1993. He also played baseball at El Camino in 1993. He originally enrolled at USC as a baseball player, spending the fall of 1992 on the Trojans’ roster. Sarkisian was a standout football and baseball player at West Torrance (Calif.) High. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from BYU in 1997 after receiving his associate’s degree from El Camino in 1994. Sarkisian was born March 8, 1974. WASHINGTON at ILLINOIS • SOLDIER FIELD • SEPT. 14, 2013 • 3:00 P.M. PT/5:00 P.M. CT (BIG TEN NETWORK) COACHING STAFF: Washington’s assistant coaching staff welcomed just two new members in 2013 as former graduate assistant Jordan Paopao was elevated to tight ends coach and legendary Husky quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo returned to Montlake to coach quarterbacks. Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau also made a move, switching from quarterbacks to receivers coach (while maintaining his coordinating duties). Nearly all of the UW’s nine full-time assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-Pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by second-year assistant Kiesau, who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau had spent the previous decade at either Cal or Colorado. Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fifth season as the UW’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW from Arizona State. Paopao, who played at San Diego, had spent the previous two years as a GA at Washington, is the son of former BC Lions assistant coach Tony Paopao. Assistant head coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fifth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The defensive staff saw no changes after the 2012 season. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California before moving to the UW this in 2012. A former Cal defensive lineman, he’d coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington has four new graduate assistants: former Husky wide receiver D’Andre Goodwin, Kenyon Blue, Connor Knowles and Danny Razore. VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies’ full-time coaching staff includes just one UW graduate (Marques Tuiasosopo), nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisian’s only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. Defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies’ running backs coach and special teams coordinator, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to 2000. More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies during his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto ever faced Washington during his career at Idaho, he grew up in the Evergreen State (Spokane), while tight ends coach Jordan Paopao spent some of his childhood living in Vancouver, B.C., when his dad coached with the BC Lions of the CFL. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State. HUSKIES vs. ILLINI HISTORY: For a stretch of time from 1950 through 1972, Washington and Illinois faced one another on a semi-regular basis, squaring off nine times, with all but one of those coming in the regular season. However, before and after those two years, they've not played one another, meaning its been 41 years since the last game. Washington holds the edge in the all-time series, with five wins and four losses. In 1950, first meeting between the two, an unranked Illinois hosted a 10th-ranked and previoulsy unbeaten (4-0) Husky team, upsetting the Dawgs in Champaign, 20-13. The Huskies went on to finish 8-2 that season, the only other loss coming to Cal. The following year, 8th-ranked Illinois visited Seattle and left with another win, beating No. 20 UW, 27-20. The Illini made it three wins in a row with a convincing 48-14 victory in 1952 in Champaign. Washington finally got its first win over Illinois in 1956, coach Darrell Royal's lone season at Washington, when the Huskies beat the Illini, 28-13, in Seattle. The series picked up back in 1961, a 20-7 UW win in Champaign. The following year, The Dawgs won their third in a row in the series, a 28-7 decision. After the 1963 season, the two teams met in the 1964 Rose Bowl. In that one, a Dick Butkus-lead Illinois squad took a 3-0 lead into halftime and then out-paced Junior Coffey, Rick Redman, Bill Douglas, Charlie Browning and the Huskies, 17-7. Illinois' Jim Grabowski rushed for 125 yards and was named the game's MVP. The last two meetings between the two came in the 1971 and 1972 seasons, both Husky wins behind the arm of Sonny Sixkiller. In '71, tthe Dawgs posted a 52-14 victory in Champaign and then followed that up with a 31-11 win the next season in Seattle. WASHINGTON-ILLINOIS TIES: It’s no shock that there are very few connections between the UW and Illinois coaching staffs and player rosters. In fact, there are no Huskies from Illinois and no Illini players from Washington (or the Pacific Northwest, for that matter). None of the several Illinois players from California went to high school with any of the Huskies from there (it’s worth noting that the UW’s Kevin Smith went to Centennial High School in Compton while Illinois’ Eric Finney attended another Centennial, in Riverside). On the coaching side, a few members of the UW staff have worked at places where Illinois coaches have spent time, but never together on the same staff. HUSKIES vs. THE BIG TEN: Washington holds a 44-44-2 record alltime vs. Big Ten opponents, a record that includes an 0-2 mark against Penn State (though the Nittany Lions were not members of the Big Ten at the time of their games against the UW) and 4-5-1 vs. Nebraska, also obviously not a Big Ten member at the time of any of those games. Washington has played all 12 Big Ten teams multiple times, but have faced an Big Ten opponent only once since 2003 (the UW played Indiana in ‘03 and Ohio State in ‘07). The Huskies have played Big Ten teams seven times in bowl games since 1990 (not counting Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl last season): Iowa in the 1990 Rose Bowl, Michigan in the 1992 and 1993 Rose Bowls, Iowa in the 1995 Sun Bowl, Michigan State in the 1997 Aloha Bowl, Purdue in the 2001 Rose Bowl and Purdue in the 2002 Sun Bowl. The Huskies went 4-3 in those games. Here’s the UW’s all-time record vs. current Big Ten teams: 5-4 vs. Illinois, 1-2 vs. Indiana, 3-3 vs. Iowa, 5-7 vs. Michigan, 2-1 vs. Michigan State, 7-10 vs. Minnesota, 4-5-1 vs. Nebraska, 3-0 vs. Northwestern, 3-8 vs. Ohio State, 0-2 vs. Penn State, 7-2-1 vs. Purdue, 4-0 vs. Wisconsin.

TEAM NOTES
DEFENSE ON THE RISE: Washington's defense made tremendous improvements in 2012 as compared to the 2011 totals. The Huskies were better on defense across the board, but most notably improved against the pass, where they went from the 116th (out of 120 teams) ranked unit in the nation to the 23rd . Here's a look at where the UW's per-game average and NCAA rank in all of the major team defense categories in 2011 and 2012: 2011 Avg. (NCAA Rank) Rushing Defense 168.69 (76th) Passing Defense 284.62 (116th) Pass Eff. Defense 137.57 (87th) Total Defense 453.31 (106th) Scoring Defense 35.92 (108th) 2012 Avg. (NCAA Rank) 160.08 (61st) 197.31 (23rd) 115.39 (27th) 357.38 (31st) 24.15 (39th) CAPTAINS: At the Huskies’ annual “Raise the Woof!” preseason celebration, the captains for the 2013 season were unveiled. This season, six captains were selected. On offense, senior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.), junior tailback Bishop Sankey (Spokane, Wash.) and junior guard Colin Tanigawa (Los Angeles) were honored. On defense, senior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), junior linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior defensive lineman Hau’oli Kikaha (Laie, Hawai’i) were selected. Price, Parker and Timu were all captains in 2012 as well. THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 185-583 (.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies are already 1-0 this season as Bishop Sankey ran for 161 in the victory over Boise State. The Dawgs were 5-2 in such games last season. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 82 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 67-14-1 (.823) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 42-11-1 (.787) when rushing for 200 yards. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over the last 22 months or so as the entire lower bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com. HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2013 season marks the 93rd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 358-169-21 (.672). FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jermaine Kearse, who now plays for the Seahawks. Junior WR Kasen Williams’ dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman (1979-82) wide receiver for the Huskies. Sophomore OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek (1986-89). Senior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, junior TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson.

1,000-YARD STREAK: Husky sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey breached the 1,000-yard mark for the 2012 season in the win over Utah. He finished the season with 1,439 yards, third-most in UW history. Sankey was just the 11th different player in UW history to rush for 1,000 yards and his season was the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. In four years under head coach Steve Sarkisian, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back each year. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of the last three seasons and Sankey took over the streak in 2012. DAWGS IN AN NFL STADIUM: Given that the UW played its entire 2012 season at CenturyLink Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks, playing in an NFL stadium this weekend in Chicago won’t be that novel. In fact, the UW has played in a number of current or former NFL stadiums over the years. Of course, the Dawgs regularly play in the Los Angeles Coliseum, former home to the Rams, Raiders and Chargers. The UW has also played in a few Holiday Bowl game in San Diego’s professional ballpark. Additionally, Washington has played in the Orange Bowl (Dolphins), Pitt Stadium (Steelers), Sun Devil Stadium (Cardinals) and Kezar Stadium (49ers). It’s worth noting that Husky Stadium was the Seahawks’ home field in 2000 and 2001 (as well as for three games in 1994). THREE BOWLS IN FOUR YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reaching a bowl game last year for the third season while just four years removed from a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The Huskies were just the third team in the last 50 years of major college football to have gone from winless to three bowl games within four seasons. The only other programs to accomplish that feat are Indiana (winless in 1984; bowl games in 1986, 1987 and 1988) and Florida (winless in 1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983). In 2011, the UW became one of just eight teams ever to go to two bowls within three seasons after a no-win season. THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. This year, and 2014, the Huskies don’t face Utah or USC.
