Wealth management as a concept originated in the year 1990’s in the US. Essentially it is the investment advisory covering financial planning that provides individuals with private banking / asset management / taxation advisory and portfolio management. Among the above services, portfolio management is generic and the rest are highly customized.

Investment was restricted to real estate, bonds, fixed income and gold. The opening up of equity markets has caught the imagination of the masses. While further development and transparency have created a surge in the user base. Need to manage the wealth by a specialist was felt and this created the concept of Wealth Managers. So who are wealth managers ????

Wealth managers are essentially individuals who are trained in the aspects of financial planning. This enables them to address the needs of the individual by combining his individual ability with the product and market knowledge of his firm. Does technology play a part ????

Wealth managers are becoming increasingly aware of the potential of the online (platform) with overall structure of their advisory offerings.

There are few wealth management firms and platforms using internet as a medium for meeting client’s demands. Wealth management tools and online solutions can extend. It can also provide a complimentary solution to the current structure of the global wealth management (traditional practices).

Many banks define these target clients as having a minimum Net Worth or Asset Base which make them attractive customers for retail banks. Target clients in this space typically have a net worth (or positive asset base) of somewhere from between US $150,000 and US $1,000,000 ($1 million). Whereas Private Banking clients typically have a net worth of greater than US $1,000,000 but increasingly expectations are around US $5,000,000 ($5 million).
