Alcides Zelaya Web Design David Wang 19 September 2013 Responsive Web Design 250-500 words to summarize/explain your research project / presentation A website that responds to the device that accesses it and delivers the appropriate output for it uses responsive design. Rather than designing multiple sites for different-sized devices, this approach designs one site but specifies how it should appear on various devices. Responsive web design has become one of the hottest trends in 2013 for web developers. This is largely due to the growth of smart phones and other mobile devices. Due to the proliferation of smart phones, more people are using smaller-screen devices to view Web pages. The purpose of responsive design is to have one site, but with different elements that respond differently when viewed on devices of different sizes. In addition to re-sizing for each device, websites that use this responsive technique also shift when a smart phone is turned vertically or horizontally, just like a portrait or landscape layout for a picture. Responsive web sites use fluid grids. All page elements are sized by proportion, rather than pixels. So if you have three columns, you wouldn’t say exactly how wide each should be, but rather how wide they should be in relation to the other columns. In simple terms, a responsive web design uses media queries to figure out what resolution of device it is being served on. Flexible images and fluid grids then re-size correctly to fit the screen. In a world where people frequently switch between a growing array of devices, responsive design allows webmasters to create flexible websites that adjust to fit the device and user. This is done through the use of flexible grid layouts, adaptive images, and CSS media queries. Flexible grid layouts use percentages rather than fixed units, like pixels. Media queries analyze the device upon which a site is being displayed in order to figure out how best to display the website.
