The centrepiece of any wedding reception is the cake display. Whether you are planning an elaborate formal
reception or a casual celebration, there are creative wedding cakes that will inspire you to coordinate a beautiful look
for your special day. Remember also that it is customary for you to keep the top tier for your first anniversary
celebration. The Flair team partnered with one of Jamaica's newest and premier sweet-treat providers - Forever
Sweet - to showcase a few pointers that all brides should consider before the BIG day comes.
Choose a bakery or cake designer with a good reputation
Start the search for your wedding cake right from the comfort of your home, almost every business is into social
media these days. Look through digital albums via Facebook, Twitter etc., and read comments from other clients
which can give you an impression of the quality of service offered. If the photos aren't up-to-date, their work isn't
either. You want to work with a bakery or designer with positive feedback from married couples and a wide range of
cakes to offer. Next, you should visit the bakery or set up a consultation to meet the designer or staff. It's important to
walk out of the consultation with an image of the cake either drawn or rendered from a computer so that there are no
surprises on your wedding day. If you don't feel comfortable with the designer or staff, you won't be happy with your
cake.
Give yourself adequate time to pick that perfect wedding cake
Three to six months is enough time to plan the cake, the Internet/Google is a great place to look for design ideas in
your own time. Once you've chosen a colour scheme and venue, it's a good idea to finalise the cake design right
after.
Make sure you know how the cake tastes
Arrange for a cake-tasting before you have paid your deposit. If the cake has multiple flavours, taste all of them.
Basic flavours like chocolate, red-velvet, black forest and vanilla will vary depending on how the cake is made, its
formulation, its frosting and more. Don't assume taste!
Get creative with the design (bye bye royal icing)
The age of the plain tiered white wedding cake with a plastic bride and groom figurine at the top is long gone and,
personally, we at Forever Sweet are happy to see it go. Fondant is the way to go as it allows for a lot more creativity.
Many brides bring their colour scheme (wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses, invitation, décor) into the design. Others
are coordinating jewellery on their special day with cake adornments such a pearls, diamonds and gold for example.
If a bride is wearing them, we can replicate the look on a cake.
Also, themed weddings need a thumbed cake. From beach weddings to religious ceremonies, any type of wedding
can be accommodated with a custom cake.
Don't commit these two deadly sins
There are two deadly sins of planning a custom wedding cake: The first is waiting until the last minute. Bakeries or
designers will have their custom cakes calendared weeks in advance. Special ingredients and decorations are
usually needed and in some cases, created from scratch, which takes considerable experimentation at times.
The second mistake is having too many people provide input. We have seen many brides go crazy because they
involved both sets of parents, friends, cousins, the entire bridesmaid party, etc. When you come to the consultation,
keep your entourage down to one or two persons at the most. Choosing a cake is about what feels good to you as
the bride after all, it's all about you on your wedding day.

different at the Expo so they said how about an upside-down cake. And

were going to have the cake hanging by a hook. They wanted prospective
brides to see how creative their wedding cake could actually be, staying
true to their slogan, 'It's not just a cake, it's art'. We are tired of
seeing beautiful brides without a cake to represent them or fit into
their wedding theme. The four-tier upside down cake is certainly a
centrepiece at any event. The cake is hung safely by a steel hook and
supported by a steel structure. The Illusion is certainly one of a kind

Selling hundreds of $20-bags of candy and enduring months of toil and labour in fast-food restaurants were
the stepping stones to dreams becoming reality for two young university students who saw the need for
creative, perfectly detailed designer cakes.
Suejen and Preston Haynes, who just recently tied the knot, had life fairly easy growing up. However, as the years
progressed, they realised the value of and the need for hard work
"We were always business-minded and willing to work. It was this mentality that saw Preston selling gummy worms
on campus and me joining him while we were dating. We made a lot of money, to our surprise - even more than what
our colleagues made as student workers," said Suejen.
Suejen and Preston, who studied English with a minor in law and information science and a minor in mass
communication, respectively, at Northern Carib-bean University, came up with the idea for their business, Forever
Sweet and Glow Inc, in 2011. After three months of research and numerous experiments, things started to look
promising.
The beginning
"We attempted our first designer cake by covering a bowl with fondant and making edible teddy bears and roses to
decorate the covered bowl. Having succeeded, we realised that we needed the tools that would help us to create the
type of cake that we wanted to provide," they told Rural Express.
Though the profit made from candy sales was impressive, it was not enough to start the business, and so the Haynes
applied for work on the United States work and study programme.
Toiling 16 hours a day, six days a week for three months at fastfood joints was not easy, but they persevered, and
soon, they were fully equipped with the well-needed tools. On returning to Jamaica, the business, Forever Sweet and
Glow Inc, was officially started.
"We started advertising right away on social media and started getting orders two weeks after we started advertising.
We have been in business ever since. We have grown exponentially in terms of our business by successfully catering
to the customised needs of all our customers," said Preston.
Suejen, who is the head pastry chef, and Preston the designer, have no formal training in the field but are pleased
with their output.
"Our cakes are not created by only using concepts seen in books or taught in schools. We have garnered ways to
create cakes that we have managed to ascertain through practice, imagination, and a creative knack. The designer
cakes we produce do not entail only icing sugar and butter. It includes graphic designing, sculpting, among other
things," said Suejen.
Forever sweet currently offers customised cakes for occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby
showers, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, baby christenings, among others. The company also has authentic
fondant for sale and offers cake-designing classes.
Anything is possible
"There's nothing too difficult for us to do. We have developed the requisite skills to be able to master any design once
it is possible. A cake is created in our minds before our hands go to work. Thus, once we can imagine it, we can
create it," they told Rural Express.
Boasting a wide clientele that includes Konshens, Tifa, Jah Cure, Aidonia, Bounty Killa, Movado, Warren Weir, Asafa
Powell, Kemar Bailey Cole, Digicel, National Commercial Bank, and Magna Rewards, the forever sweet team hopes
to establish boutiques and cake-supplies stores in Mandeville, Kingston, and Montego Bay, and a Forever Sweet
designer cake school to teach baking and decorating skills at all levels in a bid to improve cake standards in Jamaica
and the Caribbean.
The team, which completed an 11-tier wedding cake recently, one of the biggest in Jamaica, intends to sculpt a cake
of a life-size car and person sometime in the future.

Wedding Boutonniere Tips

The word boutonniere is derived the French word for buttonhole. Most brides I
know overlook the boutonniere selection process. It is often the florist or
wedding planner that raises any concern or questions re the boutonniere
selection. Choosing the right boutonniere is very important.
There are two main types of boutonnieres:
1. Classic Boutonnieres such as a rosebud or a miniature calla lily as show
below.
2. The Contemporary Boutonniere such a tiny branch of berries or an orchid as
shown below:
But how do you choose your wedding boutonniere:
The color of your wedding boutonniere can be chosen to either complement or
contrast the color of the groom’s outfit. Once you have chosen the groom’s
boutonniere you need to ensure that the bestman and groomsmen
boutonniere’s are selected also along the same guideline and that they look
good. If you select a yellow rose for the groom in a turquoise and yellow
wedding you can select a turquoise bloom for the men. Keep in mind the
bestman and groomsmen should complement the MOH and bridesmaids.
How do you wear a wedding boutonniere?
The boutonniere should be worn on the outside of the left lapel. Many persons
use various methods to pin the boutonniere. One method is holding the
boutonniere by the stem in your left hand, place the boutonniere on the lapel
below the buttonhole. Holding the pin in your right hand start from the back of
the lapel push it through the fabric just below the head of the flower. Cross the
length of the pin over the stem and reinsert back into the fabric so the pin head
rests behind the lapel or I prefer to do the opposite and letting the pearl head
pin show.

offered potential brides and prospective event planners tips on making their
special day perfect. Guests received presentations from wedding vendors who
are experts in their fields. Ranging from how to create and stick to a reasonable
budget, bridal-wear tips, and make-up to hair and photography.
Giving back
Helen Hutchinson-Graham, CEO of Helen G Events, told Outlook: “I believe in
giving back and, as a result, we invited two participants of the Re-Birth Project to
take part in our workshop, free of cost. The hope is that these young women
would be enlightened to other income-earning possibilities.”
The daylong event was completed on schedule, just in time for the cocktail hour,
courtesy of CPJ, and the guests were ready for the grand finale fashion show.
Decor
The lawns of Eden Gardens were transformed into a runway, with the decor
taking on a funky and modern theme.
Hutchinson-Graham told Outlook: “We looked at Pantone’s colours of the year
and went with a non-traditional pairing of navy and lime green to create a
backdrop that would pop. Careful colour selection is an easy way for event
planners and future brides to stay ahead of trends. The location, Eden Gardens,
was specifically selected for this event because we wanted to showcase that
Eden Gardens has the perfect setting in Kingston to host an intimate wedding or
special event.”
Fashion
Guests were treated to bridal and resort wear trends for 2015, featuring
collections from Courtney Washington, Sobelio Boutique, Bliss Bridal, White
Lotus, Beautiful Brides, Etal Jewlery, and Fashion Statement Boutique. Models
strutted down the runway in trendy rompers, shift dresses, maxi dresses, and
closed the show in awe-inspiring gowns. Designer Courtney Washington showed
alternatives for the beach bride and embraced a nude and calming palette.
Hutchinson-Graham told Outlook: “We would like to thank all our sponsors –
CPJ, Gorgeous Flowers, and Eye-Q Optical – who helped to make this annual
event a success. Next year, our aim is bigger and better.”

and photographed as well. So paying attention to the wedding cake is important
Check out our top 10 wedding cake tips below. Please note our wedding cake
tips are not in order of importance:
Wedding Cake tip #1: A square cake will yield 10 to 30 percent more than a
round one. So if you arent stuck on having a round cake this could be a viable
option for you.
Wedding Cake Tip #2: You can choose a small display cake or choose a display
cake where only the bottom tier is real for cutting and then serve sheet cakes.
This will help keep this cost factor down.
Wedding Cake Tip #3: If you are on a budget you can serve the display cake
instead of doing additional sheet cakes and the display cake.
Wedding Cake Tip #4: Remember the main reason why wedding cakes cost alot
is the design, so if you are on a budget the simpler the cake the more budget
friendly it will be. So simple but nice is the way to go as shown below.
Wedding Cake Tip #5: Another way to save money on your wedding cake for
your wedding in Jamaica is to reduce the number of tiers on the cake. You can
choose a very nice design but with less tiers and still have a fabulous cake.

people that should be there is 4 and ensure one is the groom. Remember the

anniversary be careful of freezer burner. Suggestion from the Knot “Think about

fresh cake in the same flavor when you’ve survived the first year. If you must
adhere to tradition, wrap the cake in plastic wrap, then bag it in an airtight
baggie. Stay away from aluminum foil — it might not protect against freezer
burn as well as plastic wrap because it’s not an airtight material.”

Booking Your Wedding Venue in Jamaica

One of the first things to note if you are getting married in Jamaica is that you
need to book your wedding venue early, especially if you are getting married
during peak times such as June, July and December. Great venue are in limited
supply and you want to get this out of the way early.
Our second tip for booking your wedding venue in Jamaica is that if you are
getting married in Jamaica we suggest to those who are not opposed to having
their wedding ceremony and reception at the same venue to try and book at a
venue where you can stay at as well as host your wedding and rehearsal dinner,
why? A good wedding planner will be able to negotiate better discounts with
that property for you as you will be bringing alot more business to them. They
will not only be accommodating you and your guests which in itself is enough if
you are booking over 10 rooms but also catering your event.
Our third tip for booking your wedding venue in Jamaica is when booking using
pictures from the internet you need to find out how old these pictures are or
request recent pictures as the location may have deteriorated etc.
Our fourth tip when booking your wedding venue in Jamaica is to get expert
advise. You want to make sure that the location will suit what you want for your
wedding decor and guests.

The centrepiece of any wedding reception is the cake display. Whether you are planning an elaborate formal
reception or a casual celebration, there are creative wedding cakes that will inspire you to coordinate a beautiful look
for your special day. Remember also that it is customary for you to keep the top tier for your first anniversary
celebration. The Flair team partnered with one of Jamaica's newest and premier sweet-treat providers - Forever
Sweet - to showcase a few pointers that all brides should consider before the BIG day comes.
Choose a bakery or cake designer with a good reputation
Start the search for your wedding cake right from the comfort of your home, almost every business is into social
media these days. Look through digital albums via Facebook, Twitter etc., and read comments from other clients
which can give you an impression of the quality of service offered. If the photos aren't up-to-date, their work isn't
either. You want to work with a bakery or designer with positive feedback from married couples and a wide range of
cakes to offer. Next, you should visit the bakery or set up a consultation to meet the designer or staff. It's important to
walk out of the consultation with an image of the cake either drawn or rendered from a computer so that there are no
surprises on your wedding day. If you don't feel comfortable with the designer or staff, you won't be happy with your
cake.
Give yourself adequate time to pick that perfect wedding cake
Three to six months is enough time to plan the cake, the Internet/Google is a great place to look for design ideas in
your own time. Once you've chosen a colour scheme and venue, it's a good idea to finalise the cake design right
after.
Make sure you know how the cake tastes
Arrange for a cake-tasting before you have paid your deposit. If the cake has multiple flavours, taste all of them.
Basic flavours like chocolate, red-velvet, black forest and vanilla will vary depending on how the cake is made, its
formulation, its frosting and more. Don't assume taste!
Get creative with the design (bye bye royal icing)
The age of the plain tiered white wedding cake with a plastic bride and groom figurine at the top is long gone and,
personally, we at Forever Sweet are happy to see it go. Fondant is the way to go as it allows for a lot more creativity.
Many brides bring their colour scheme (wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses, invitation, décor) into the design. Others
are coordinating jewellery on their special day with cake adornments such a pearls, diamonds and gold for example.
If a bride is wearing them, we can replicate the look on a cake.
Also, themed weddings need a thumbed cake. From beach weddings to religious ceremonies, any type of wedding
can be accommodated with a custom cake.
Don't commit these two deadly sins
There are two deadly sins of planning a custom wedding cake: The first is waiting until the last minute. Bakeries or
designers will have their custom cakes calendared weeks in advance. Special ingredients and decorations are
usually needed and in some cases, created from scratch, which takes considerable experimentation at times.
The second mistake is having too many people provide input. We have seen many brides go crazy because they
involved both sets of parents, friends, cousins, the entire bridesmaid party, etc. When you come to the consultation,
keep your entourage down to one or two persons at the most. Choosing a cake is about what feels good to you as
the bride after all, it's all about you on your wedding day.

true to their slogan, 'It's not just a cake, it's art'. We are tired of
seeing beautiful brides without a cake to represent them or fit into
their wedding theme. The four-tier upside down cake is certainly a
centrepiece at any event. The cake is hung safely by a steel hook and
supported by a steel structure. The Illusion is certainly one of a kind

Selling hundreds of $20-bags of candy and enduring months of toil and labour in fast-food restaurants were
the stepping stones to dreams becoming reality for two young university students who saw the need for
creative, perfectly detailed designer cakes.
Suejen and Preston Haynes, who just recently tied the knot, had life fairly easy growing up. However, as the years
progressed, they realised the value of and the need for hard work
"We were always business-minded and willing to work. It was this mentality that saw Preston selling gummy worms
on campus and me joining him while we were dating. We made a lot of money, to our surprise - even more than what
our colleagues made as student workers," said Suejen.
Suejen and Preston, who studied English with a minor in law and information science and a minor in mass
communication, respectively, at Northern Carib-bean University, came up with the idea for their business, Forever
Sweet and Glow Inc, in 2011. After three months of research and numerous experiments, things started to look
promising.
The beginning
"We attempted our first designer cake by covering a bowl with fondant and making edible teddy bears and roses to
decorate the covered bowl. Having succeeded, we realised that we needed the tools that would help us to create the
type of cake that we wanted to provide," they told Rural Express.
Though the profit made from candy sales was impressive, it was not enough to start the business, and so the Haynes
applied for work on the United States work and study programme.
Toiling 16 hours a day, six days a week for three months at fastfood joints was not easy, but they persevered, and
soon, they were fully equipped with the well-needed tools. On returning to Jamaica, the business, Forever Sweet and
Glow Inc, was officially started.
"We started advertising right away on social media and started getting orders two weeks after we started advertising.
We have been in business ever since. We have grown exponentially in terms of our business by successfully catering
to the customised needs of all our customers," said Preston.
Suejen, who is the head pastry chef, and Preston the designer, have no formal training in the field but are pleased
with their output.
"Our cakes are not created by only using concepts seen in books or taught in schools. We have garnered ways to
create cakes that we have managed to ascertain through practice, imagination, and a creative knack. The designer
cakes we produce do not entail only icing sugar and butter. It includes graphic designing, sculpting, among other
things," said Suejen.
Forever sweet currently offers customised cakes for occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby
showers, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, baby christenings, among others. The company also has authentic
fondant for sale and offers cake-designing classes.
Anything is possible
"There's nothing too difficult for us to do. We have developed the requisite skills to be able to master any design once
it is possible. A cake is created in our minds before our hands go to work. Thus, once we can imagine it, we can
create it," they told Rural Express.
Boasting a wide clientele that includes Konshens, Tifa, Jah Cure, Aidonia, Bounty Killa, Movado, Warren Weir, Asafa
Powell, Kemar Bailey Cole, Digicel, National Commercial Bank, and Magna Rewards, the forever sweet team hopes
to establish boutiques and cake-supplies stores in Mandeville, Kingston, and Montego Bay, and a Forever Sweet
designer cake school to teach baking and decorating skills at all levels in a bid to improve cake standards in Jamaica
and the Caribbean.
The team, which completed an 11-tier wedding cake recently, one of the biggest in Jamaica, intends to sculpt a cake
of a life-size car and person sometime in the future.

Wedding Boutonniere Tips

The word boutonniere is derived the French word for buttonhole. Most brides I
know overlook the boutonniere selection process. It is often the florist or
wedding planner that raises any concern or questions re the boutonniere
selection. Choosing the right boutonniere is very important.
There are two main types of boutonnieres:
1. Classic Boutonnieres such as a rosebud or a miniature calla lily as show
below.
2. The Contemporary Boutonniere such a tiny branch of berries or an orchid as
shown below:
But how do you choose your wedding boutonniere:
The color of your wedding boutonniere can be chosen to either complement or
contrast the color of the groom’s outfit. Once you have chosen the groom’s
boutonniere you need to ensure that the bestman and groomsmen
boutonniere’s are selected also along the same guideline and that they look
good. If you select a yellow rose for the groom in a turquoise and yellow
wedding you can select a turquoise bloom for the men. Keep in mind the
bestman and groomsmen should complement the MOH and bridesmaids.
How do you wear a wedding boutonniere?
The boutonniere should be worn on the outside of the left lapel. Many persons
use various methods to pin the boutonniere. One method is holding the
boutonniere by the stem in your left hand, place the boutonniere on the lapel
below the buttonhole. Holding the pin in your right hand start from the back of
the lapel push it through the fabric just below the head of the flower. Cross the
length of the pin over the stem and reinsert back into the fabric so the pin head
rests behind the lapel or I prefer to do the opposite and letting the pearl head
pin show.

Fashion of Weddings Bridal Affair

On Sunday, January 25, Helen G Events hosted its inaugural Make Your Day
wedding workshop at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort & Spa. The workshop
offered potential brides and prospective event planners tips on making their
special day perfect. Guests received presentations from wedding vendors who
are experts in their fields. Ranging from how to create and stick to a reasonable
budget, bridal-wear tips, and make-up to hair and photography.
Giving back
Helen Hutchinson-Graham, CEO of Helen G Events, told Outlook: “I believe in
giving back and, as a result, we invited two participants of the Re-Birth Project to
take part in our workshop, free of cost. The hope is that these young women
would be enlightened to other income-earning possibilities.”
The daylong event was completed on schedule, just in time for the cocktail hour,
courtesy of CPJ, and the guests were ready for the grand finale fashion show.
Decor
The lawns of Eden Gardens were transformed into a runway, with the decor
taking on a funky and modern theme.
Hutchinson-Graham told Outlook: “We looked at Pantone’s colours of the year
and went with a non-traditional pairing of navy and lime green to create a
backdrop that would pop. Careful colour selection is an easy way for event
planners and future brides to stay ahead of trends. The location, Eden Gardens,
was specifically selected for this event because we wanted to showcase that
Eden Gardens has the perfect setting in Kingston to host an intimate wedding or
special event.”
Fashion
Guests were treated to bridal and resort wear trends for 2015, featuring
collections from Courtney Washington, Sobelio Boutique, Bliss Bridal, White
Lotus, Beautiful Brides, Etal Jewlery, and Fashion Statement Boutique. Models
strutted down the runway in trendy rompers, shift dresses, maxi dresses, and
closed the show in awe-inspiring gowns. Designer Courtney Washington showed
alternatives for the beach bride and embraced a nude and calming palette.
Hutchinson-Graham told Outlook: “We would like to thank all our sponsors –
CPJ, Gorgeous Flowers, and Eye-Q Optical – who helped to make this annual
event a success. Next year, our aim is bigger and better.”

Wedding Cake tip #1: A square cake will yield 10 to 30 percent more than a
round one. So if you arent stuck on having a round cake this could be a viable
option for you.

cake where only the bottom tier is real for cutting and then serve sheet cakes.

anniversary be careful of freezer burner. Suggestion from the Knot “Think about
indulging on your two-week or one-month anniversary, and treat yourself to a
fresh cake in the same flavor when you’ve survived the first year. If you must
adhere to tradition, wrap the cake in plastic wrap, then bag it in an airtight
baggie. Stay away from aluminum foil — it might not protect against freezer
burn as well as plastic wrap because it’s not an airtight material.”

Booking Your Wedding Venue in Jamaica

One of the first things to note if you are getting married in Jamaica is that you
need to book your wedding venue early, especially if you are getting married
during peak times such as June, July and December. Great venue are in limited
supply and you want to get this out of the way early.
Our second tip for booking your wedding venue in Jamaica is that if you are
getting married in Jamaica we suggest to those who are not opposed to having
their wedding ceremony and reception at the same venue to try and book at a
venue where you can stay at as well as host your wedding and rehearsal dinner,
why? A good wedding planner will be able to negotiate better discounts with
that property for you as you will be bringing alot more business to them. They
will not only be accommodating you and your guests which in itself is enough if
you are booking over 10 rooms but also catering your event.

request recent pictures as the location may have deteriorated etc.
