It’s summertime in
northern Michigan!
Communities throughout
the north celebrate the
gorgeous climate and
scenic beauty of the season with a host
of festivals and events from Memorial
Day through Labor Day. This year, a
long-standing Cheboygan summer tradi-
tion, Riverfest, is being transformed into
a new summertime event; Waterways
Festival, and it will be taking place this
coming weekend, July 12th through July
15th.
Organizers relate that Riverfest has
long been known for bringing together
visitors and local folks to one of the most
unusual and exciting weekends of com-
petitions and summer entertainment
anywhere in Northern Michigan, and
Waterways Festival continues that tradi-
tion. Sponsored by the Cheboygan Area
Chamber of Commerce, the Waterways
Festival is a true celebration of
Cheboygan’s river town life. It features a
parade, kid’s day, antique show, kayak
race, concerts, a fish fry night, a
bratwurst and hamburger night, raffles,
tournaments, and much more summer-
time fun… right in the heart of down-
town Cheboygan.
Thursday, July 12th is Kid’s Day, held
at Washington Park from 1:30 to 5:30 pm
with a huge variety of games, face paint-
ing, races, dunk tank, a magic show, an
inflatable bounce house, hot dogs and
beverages, and a Wanigan Parade start-
ing at 6 pm. Kids are invited to decorate
their bikes, either at home or at a special

The Alpine Village of Gaylord will soon
be “Swiss Dressed at Alpenfest,” as the
community gets ready to put on what has
become the quintessential summer party
in northern Lower Michigan. Since 1964,
the Alpine Village of Gaylord has been the
place to be during mid-July in the north
as the celebration of Alpenfest literally
shuts down Main Street for this huge
annual event. For one glorious, action-
packed week, the charming Bavarian-
style city of Gaylord is transformed into
an Alpine festival town with lots of live
music, dancing, a tantalizing selection of
delicious food and beverages, handmade
arts and crafts, amazing street entertain-
ers, thrilling carnival rides, downright
silly (though also challenging) games,
and plenty of smiling people dressed in
traditional Alpine attire.

While Alpenfest week always offers a very
colorful array of sights along the
Alpenstrasse in downtown Gaylord, another
annual event that takes place in town that
same week celebrates the incredible color
and beauty only Mother Nature, with some
assistance by a group of very talented gar-
deners, can provide.
It’s time for the annual Edelweiss Garden
Club Walk, one of the Club’s most anticipat-
ed signature events of the year, showcasing
several gardens in the Gaylord area. This
year’s Edelweiss Garden Club Walk will be
taking place on Wednesday, July 18th, follow-
ing a theme of “Countryside Gardens.” The
walk will feature a woodland shades garden
with 100 varieties of Hostas and two man-
made streams, a Maple woods with a free-
standing Red Wishing Door, a lakeside gar-
den with a very special garden house, a sun-
worshiping farm which began by trading a
miniature horse for a garden full of flowers
and the Big Bear Deli gardens where tour
attendees may take a rest, purchase an
amazing sandwich, a homemade dessert and
receive a free drink.
Tickets for the walk, which is a self-guided
event running from 1 to 7 pm on Wednesday,
July 18th, are available at
Glens Market, The Spud
Warehouse and Saturn
Booksellers in Gaylord, and
also from any Edelweiss
Garden Club member. For
the price of just $8 per ticket
(children under 16 free), par-
ticipants will receive a self-
guided tour map, as well as
an afternoon and evening
experience highlighting the
best of Natures beauty…with
some skilled assistance by the participating
gardeners.

of Gaylord and for area scholarships.

It holds the distinction of being the smallest city
in the United States to have a diocese, yet this
year’s Alpenfest 48 Honored Industry, the Diocese
of Gaylord, serves 21 northern Michigan counties,
stretching from East Tawas to the southeast and
Manistee to the southwest and all the way north
to the Straits of Mackinac. That encompasses over
11,000 square miles, a population exceeding one-
half million, 80 parishes, 17 Catholic schools and
over 66,000 individuals of the Catholic faith. It
hardly seems that there is anything even remotely
small about the Diocese of Gaylord!
“Part of the wisdom in establishing this location
for the Diocese is the central location to the terri-
tory we serve,” states Bishop Bernard A. Hebda,
who was ordained and installed as the Fourth
Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord
in December of 2009. “Gaylord is also a very lively
and exciting community. We are grateful that the
people in this area welcome our Diocese as part of
their community.”
In May, the Alpenfest Honors Committee select-
ed the Diocese of Gaylord as the 2012 Alpenfest 48
Honored Industry. The Honors Committee annu-
ally convenes representatives from the Alpenfest
Board of Directors, the Gaylord Area Chamber of
Commerce, the Otsego County Economic Alliance,
and the community at large to review candidates
for the Honored Industry award. The selection cri-
terion prescribes that the honoree should be “a
great friend to the community, should work to
improve rapport between community groups, and
have a significant impact on the community.”
“It is a great honor for the Diocese of Gaylord
and our staff to be such a specially recognized
part of this community,” relates Bishop Hebda. “It
is an affirmation of the Diocese valuable role here.
One of the most visible ways we serve the Gaylord
community is through our St. Mary Catherdral
and St. Mary School, but most of our employees
are from the Gaylord area and are also highly
involved here in the community.”
The Diocese of Gaylord has about 25 full time
individuals on staff, plus many others working at
the St. Mary Catherdral and St. Mary School. His
Holiness Pope Paul VI originally established the
Diocese in Gaylord on July 20th, 1971. Pope
Benedict XVI named Bernard A. Hebda the Bishop
for the Diocese of Gaylord in October of 2009, suc-
ceeding Bishop Patrick R. Cooney who retired
after serving the Diocese for 20 years.
As Honored Industry, the Diocese of Gaylord
will be recognized throughout Alpenfest 48 and
will be saluted at the Alpenfest Honors Luncheon,
to be held at The Otsego Club’s Special Event
Center at noon on July 17th.

Gaylord, please visit

Alpenfest Continued...
Waterways Continued...
The yearlong wait is over, and once again;
from Tuesday July 17th through Saturday,
July 21st, it’s time for Alpenfest! “Swiss
Dressed at Alpenfest” is the theme of
Alpenfest 48, and the schedule is jammed
packed with excitement and entertainment
for those of every age,
When Alpenfest began 48 years ago, the
town of Gaylord was undergoing a transfor-
mation that would soon establish an Alpine
look to the downtown business area, so the
idea of holding an “Alpine Festival” was per-
fectly in-sync with the city’s new motif.
“Gordon Everett was instrumental in pro-
moting the concept of the Alpine theme for
the downtown area,” recalled Gaylord resi-
dent, Ernie Grocock. “And it also coincided
with the opening of the Georgia Pacific
plant, which utilized a process for making
particle board that was patented in
Switzerland (by Fred Fahmi). That first event
was called “Alpine Festival,” and it was
designed to celebrate our uniqueness.”
That uniqueness extends to the distinctive
Bavarian-style attire worn by many Alpenfest
attendees. Dirndls, lederhosen, blu-
menkrantz, trachten socks, velour Bavarian
hats…clothing long familiar to residents in
Alpine regions but seldom seen, much less
pronounced, in northern Michigan, become
the fashion rage in Gaylord during Alpenfest.
“These were traditional garments in
Bavarian areas,” stated Betty Moore, also a
longtime Gaylord resident who now operates
Gaylord’s Jet’s Pizza franchise. “A Dirndl is a
traditional ladies dress, and lederhosen and
trachten socks (split so that one part covers
the knee when climbing) are men’s wear.”
The exciting Alpenfest Queen’s Pageant
takes place on Tuesday evening, July 17th, on
the Alpenstage starting at 7 pm. As always,
there will be a walking parade, called the
Alpenfest Costume Parade, which will take
place at 9 am on Wednesday morning, July
18th. There will also be plenty of unique
games and competitions each day under the
downtown Pavilion, including a Men’s Knee
Contest, a Ladies Ankle Contest, Goldfish,
Pizza and Pie Eating contests, an Ugly Dog
Contest, a Stone Spitting Contest…and
much more.
Musical entertainers this year will include
Endless Summer, Confederate Railroad, The
Paul Keller Jazz Band and a Beatle’s tribute
band called The Return.
The Alpenfest Grand Parade takes place at
noon on Saturday, featuring local organiza-
tions, bands, colorful floats and entertainers.
This year’s Parade Marshal is Joe Duff,
Gaylord City Manager. A highlight of the
Grand Parade will be a float featuring this
year’s Alpenfest Honored Industry; The
Diocese of Gaylord (see related article).
Another popular parade celebrity is the 2012
“der Burgermeister,” Rudi Edel.
Don’t forget to pick up an Alpenfest 48 Pin
at the Alpenfest booth located at the center
of the Alpenstrasse. It’s only $3, and it enti-
tles the owner to receive lots of free or
reduced price food and beverages through-
out the celebration.
A full schedule of Alpenfest is located in
this edition of The Weekly Choice. Another
great place to find information about
Alpenfest is on the web at www.gay-
lordalpenfest.com or contact the Gaylord
Area Chamber of Commerce at 989-732-
6333.
“Creation Station” that will be set up at
Washington Park during Thursday afternoon.
The parade will start at First Federal Bank at
the Corner of Main & Court Street and head
eastward to Division Street where the pro-
cession will turn right at Zany Kitchen and
finish at the Waterway’s Festival Tent on
Water Street.
The World Championship Wanigan Race,
always a popular Riverfest event, returns to
Waterways Festival on Saturday, July 14th,
from 10:30 am to 2 pm. Back in the good ole
days when Cheboygan was the logging capi-
tal of the north during the late 19th and early
20th centuries, legend has it that lumbermen
would strap logs together and make a cook-
ing raft to gather on and eat their hot meals.
This Cheboygan Jaycees sponsored race
keeps the tradition alive as teams of five
(four paddlers and a cook) compete with
their versions of a “Wanigan.” From the
Highway 33 Bridge down the Cheboygan
River to the Lincoln Street Bridge, the teams
paddle for glory while cooking chili and
keeping it at a boil!
New this year is the Waterways Challenge;
a Kayak and Biking biathlon taking place in
the Cheboygan River and the along the
North East State Rail Trail. The Waterways
Challenge takes place on July 15th. Start of
the race is at Pier M-33 for the kayak portion.
Kayakers will go to the #5 mile marker on the
mouth of the Black River and turn around to
proceed to the marker at the mouth of
Mullet Lake and turn around to go to the
transition at the waterways campground
(approximate distance is about three miles).
From there the transition to the bike will be
on a crushed limestone trail that will go to
Aloha State park (approximate 10 mile bike)
to a turn around point just before the State
Park and then back to the finish at the

“Our inventory at the Furniture & More
showroom changes daily and is priced to
move,” states Mary Peterson, Director of
Good Samaritan Food Pantry/Resale Shop,
an affiliate of the Furniture & More store in
downtown Ellsworth. “We offer a wide vari-
ety of very nice quality furniture, home
décor accessories and appliances, and the
proceeds from the sales are utilized to help
our Food Pantry serve area families in need.”
The approximately 1,800 square foot Good
Samaritan Furniture & More showroom is
located at 6517 Center Street in Ellsworth,
and opened their doors about two years ago.
Since 1990, Good Samaritan Family Services
has been helping area families in times of
need through a diverse offering of services,
including a Food Pantry, guidance for new
mothers, providing clothing, coats and
shoes, assistance with home heating, and
more. The Furniture & More showroom,
managed by Evie Snyder, helps to support
the Good Samaritan Family Services mission.
Peterson notes, “This is a great place to
shop and browse for items for the home or
cottage. We are located in a beautiful, origi-
nal building in downtown Ellsworth that was
home to the Shooks Market for many years.
People enjoy the ambience of the show-
room, with vintage wood flooring and sever-
al living area vignettes we have set up. While
we have a wide variety of items on display,
and if there is something in particular a
shopper is looking for that we don’t currently
have, we will put them on a waiting list and
give them a call when an item that fits their
needs comes in.”
The showroom is full of gently used sofas,
chairs, tables, dressers, beds, lamps, pic-
tures, household nick-knacks…just about
anything imaginable to furnish or decorate
the home. The items are donated by local
individuals and businesses, and donations
are accepted during normal business hours.
The Good Samaritan Furniture & More
Showroom is located on Center Street in
Ellsworth diagonally across from the Front
Porch Café. The shop is open from 10 am to
4 pm Tuesday through Friday, and from 10
am until 2 pm on Saturday. For further
information, call the showroom at (231) 676-
3339 or visit www.thegoodsam.org.

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY
IN-LAWS' UPCOMING
VISIT MAKING
WIFE ANXIOUS
with Jim Daly and Dr. Juli Slattery
Q: My husband's parents are
coming for a visit, and I'm con-
cerned there may be trouble.
My mother-in-law is fond of
giving oceans of unwanted
advice. How can I politely shut
her down before the comments
start flying fast and furious?
Jim: Sometimes it's hard enough to
get along with the people living under
your own roof. When you bring in-laws
into the mix, the results can be down-
right scary!
Hopefully, your mother-in-law's
"advice" is given in love, rather than
mean-spiritedness. Either way, you
might want to talk to your husband
beforehand about ways to set bound-
aries with her in a manner that won't
insult or offend.
In the end, though, you can't control
what your mother-in-law says. But you
can control your response to it. Before
she arrives, find the book "Loving Your
Relatives Even When You Don't See Eye
to Eye" by David and Claudia Arp and
John and Margaret Bell. The authors
suggest that the majority of in-law con-
flict can be defused by following a few
simple rules of civility.
For example, always remember to
smile -- and not through gritted teeth.
People always respond better to some-
one who's smiling.
Even if your mother-in-law is acting
nosy and intrusive, make sure that
you're considerate, that you practice
restraint, and that you never raise your
voice.
Have the courage to admit when
you're wrong, and don't ever ridicule or
demean her. Give her the benefit of the
doubt, and try to see things from her
perspective. Be accepting and under-
standing of her shortcomings, and rec-
ognize that you have your own faults
and hang-ups as well.
These are good rules to keep in mind
when dealing with difficult people in
any situation, not just in-laws. But
they're especially important when in-
law conflict rears its ugly head and you
feel like tearing your hair out. No matter
how frustrating things get, just remem-
ber to be civil!
** ** **
Q: Our only grandchild is 4
years old. We cannot agree with
our daughter-in-law on how
often we, as the grandparents,
should be allowed to see our
granddaughter. Can you tell us
how we can approach this with-
out causing too much conflict
and what would be a reason-
able compromise on how many
visits would be appropriate?
Juli: I can imagine how frustrating it
must be to not be able to see your only
grandchild as much as you'd like.
Unfortunately, this is not the kind of sit-
uation in which you can find a "com-
promise." Your son and daughter-in-law
are the guardians of their daughter and
have the ability to choose unilaterally
how often you see her.
All of your frustration and effort to
reach a compromise are likely to back-
fire. If you fight for more time with your
granddaughter, you are making yourself
an adversary instead of building trust
with your daughter-in-law. Instead,
direct your energy toward trying to
understand why she is hesitant to let
you spend more time with your grand-
daughter. Most moms of young children
are happy to have an extra set of hands
or an on-call babysitter. Why doesn't
she view you in this light? You may want
to ask your son this question directly.
Ask yourself, "What can I change to be
more supportive of my daughter-in-
law?" Young moms are hungry for affir-
mation and support. Sometimes, in-
laws are viewed as threatening and crit-
ical. If this is the case, be very careful to
encourage your son and his wife. One
word of criticism speaks louder than 10
words of praise.
Remember, you can only be as effec-
tive a grandparent as you are a mother-
in-law. The more you pour support and
encouragement into your children, the
better equipped they become to raise
the next generation, and the more you
gain the credibility to invest
in your granddaughter.

New stories updated daily on-line at www.weeklychoice.com
This week, Major League Baseball’s
All-Star Game is scheduled to be played
in Kansas City. Whether you’re rooting
for the American or National League,
you’ll no doubt admire the ability and
athleticism exhibited by these tremen-
dous ballplayers. Of course, any all-star
team is made up of players who bring
different talents to the game. And this
same approach — of combining a col-
lection of skills toward one common
effort — can be found in other endeav-
ors, one of which is investing.
Here, then, is one possible lineup of
investment moves to consider:
• Diversify. All investments have both
benefits and risks. As an investor, your
goal is to help maximize the benefits
and minimize the risks — and one of the
best ways to do this is by diversifying
your money across a range of assets.
Diversifying can help you reduce the
impact of market volatility that might
affect your portfolio if all your money
was tied up in one particular asset class,
and that asset went through a “down”
period. Keep in mind, though, that
diversification, by itself, cannot guaran-
tee profits or protect against loss.
• Rebalance. Even without your taking
significant actions, your portfolio can
evolve in ways that may not be to your
liking. For example, if some of your
more aggressive investments appreciate
greatly, they may eventually constitute a
larger percentage of your holdings than
you had planned — and in doing so, ele-
vate your overall risk level. To prevent
this from happening, you should meet
with your financial advisor periodically
to “rebalance” your portfolio.
• Seek quality. Many people latch onto
“hot” investments, only to be disap-
pointed when they “cool off.” Instead
seek quality vehicles — the ones that
generally lose the least ground when the
market is down and recover more quick-
ly when the market rallies. When you
invest in stocks, for instance, look for
those companies that have strong man-
agement teams, competitive products
and good business models. When you
purchase bonds, look for those with
high ratings from the independent rat-
ing agencies.
• Stay invested. It’s tempting to “take a
breather” from investing when the
financial markets are volatile. But if you
stay on the investment sidelines, you
may miss out on the beginning of the
next market rally. If you’ve built a diver-
sified portfolio of quality vehicles, it
may be easier to stay invested.
• Know your risk tolerance. If you find
yourself constantly fretting about the
market’s ups and downs, to the extent
that your worries
are affecting the
quality of your life,
you may have a
portfolio that’s
unsuited to your
risk tolerance.
Conversely, if
you’re dissatisfied
with the growth of
your investments,
you may be
investing too cau-
tiously, which
could be a con-
cern when you’re
striving to reach
long-term goals,
such as a comfort-
able retirement.
Ultimately, there’s no one “right” way for
everyone to invest, but you do need to
match your portfolio’s composition with
your individual risk tolerance and time
horizon.
Your financial advisor can help your
find the “lineup” of investment moves
that is right for you. Put it to work soon.

has experienced a trio of boom and bust cycles
over the past 150 years. It continues to hold on
to its often colorful historical past while
remaining a vital northern Michigan commu-
nity in the 21st Century.
The publication is scheduled for release at
this year’s Thunder Over Waters event on
September 2nd.
The Otsego County Historical Society invites
the public to check out the draft version of the
book, offer input and suggestions, and bring
vintage photos of the Waters area for inclusion
in the book.
The first public session will take place on
Thursday, July 12th, from 9 am until noon at
the Otsego Lake Township Hall in downtown
Waters. The second event is scheduled for
Wednesday, July 18th, from 10 am until 2 pm at
the Otsego County Historical Society Museum
located at 320 W. Main Street in downtown
Gaylord.

Ongoing innovations in technology offer
today’s home and business owners heat-
ing and cooling solutions that are more
efficient, economical, and comfortable
than ever before. Among the many equip-
ment options offered at Family Comfort
Systems in Gaylord is the air source heat
pump; a unique cooling and heating tech-
nology that has evolved over the past few
decades to become a viable, and economi-
cal, approach to creating a virtually year-
round indoor comfort in homes and busi-
nesses right here in northern Michigan.
Kevin Westcott, owner of Family
Comfort Systems, states, “It is a technolo-
gy that has been around for a long time,
though 30 years ago an air source heat
pump was not something that would work
well in northern climates. Developments
in that technology over the years has
made heat pumps a very viable option in
our region, typically requiring an alternate
heating source only when the outside
temperature dips below 30 degrees.”
So what is an air source heat pump and
how can it save on those rising monthly
utility bills?
The units looks and function in warm
weather like a typical air conditioner;
exchanging warm air from inside the
home with cool air created through the
synergy of the unit’s compressor and
Freon gas loop. As the temperature turn
cool, the operation switches to draw BTU’s
of heat from the outdoor air and transfers
that heat into the home’s heat distribution
system.
Westcott point out. “BTU’s exist all the
way down to Absolute Zero, which is
minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit. With
today’s technology, an air source heat
pump is able to capture enough BTU’s
from the outside air effectively down to
about 30 degrees Fahrenheit for use in
heating the home or business. Below that
temperature, the system requires supple-
mental heat from a furnace or wood stove
to heat the home. Even in northern
Michigan, there are many days during the
winter when a heat pump can address all
or most of a home’s heating needs.”
The advantage? Westcott notes that in
the case of a home or business that uses a
standard propane fed furnace system, the
utility savings achieved by adding a heat
pump can approach 30-percent. Those
using a natural gas fed furnace can save
approximately 15-percent. An additional
benefit is the air source heat pump will
provide indoor air-cooling during the
summer.
“If someone is looking at replacing an
existing furnace or air conditioning sys-
tem,” Westcott states, “we will run the
numbers for them and see how the utility
savings will pay back if they utilize an air
source heat pump. There are also many
rebates available that can substantially
offset the initial investment they make for
the equipment.”
With experience in the heating and
cooling industry since 1979, Kevin
Westcott established Family Comfort
Systems in Gaylord back in 1995. The
company’s longstanding tradition of
expertise and excellence in customer serv-
ice has established a loyal customer base
throughout northern Michigan. The com-
pany recently re-located to 519 W. Second
Street in Gaylord, and can be contacted at
(989) 732-8099 or at www.familycomfort-
systems.com.

pumps a very viable (and economical) option in our region, typically requiring an alternate heating source only when the outside
temperature dips below 30 degrees.”

As we begin a new year you can make a difference in our
local economy. Make a commitment to shop at stores owned
and operated by your neighbors.
The benefits of shopping at stores owned by locals are well
documented by research. Studies done by economists show
that:
•When you spend $100 at a locally owned business $62 stays
in our community.
•When you spend $100 at a national chain $42 stays in our
community.
•When you spend $100 on-line $0 stays in our community.
These figures alone should convince you of the benefit of
shopping at independently owned local businesses but there
is so much more. Spending at a locally owned business leads
to better schools, better roads and local support of communi-
ty charities and fundraisers.
Studies also show that local, independently owned busi-
nesses paid higher wages and used more local goods and serv-
ices stretching that local dollar even further.
In yet another reason for consumers to consider shopping
locally, new research reveals that successful small businesses
are helping bolster sagging real estate markets in some com-
munities.
That's the finding of the American Express Open
Independent Retail Index, which found that neighborhoods
with thriving independent businesses saw home values out-
perform citywide markets by 50 percent over the last 14 years.
The report specifically studied 27 neighborhoods where
small businesses have thrived in 15 major U.S. cities, conclud-
ing that home values there outperformed their broader mar-
kets.
In addition, when you shop at independently owned busi-
nesses you will often deal with the owner of the business.
Their knowledge of the product or service and their concern
to see you leave as a happy customer will usually result in a
very pleasant shopping experience.
If consumers would simply look for the opportunity to shift
a portion of their spending from on-line businesses to locally
owned businesses it could make a difference in our region of
Northern Michigan.
Make 2012 the year you make the effort to make a differ-
ence. Make the decision to move 10% of your spending to
independently owned businesses. The elegance of the 10 per-
cent shift right now is that it doesn’t ask people to expand
their budgets
and spend
more. It asks
people to be
more con-
scious about
where they
spend what
they’ve already
budgeted for.

from the Broadway and operatic stage on Sat. June 14 at 7:30
PM in the clubhouse. The summer conservatory hosts over
fifty college musicians from
across the world who study
and perform in Petoskey and
the surrounding area for
eight weeks. On the upcom-
ing performance in
Mancelona, three talented
singers will be joined by
pianist Anthony Patterson
for a delightful night of well-
known, lyrical favorites and
gems from the singers'
repertoire. Joining Mr.
Patterson will be vocalists
Aani Bourassa, Katie Polit,
and Lorenzo Garcia. These
singers have leading roles in
the festival's fully-staged
production of Don Giovanni
in Petoskey from August 7-
11. Tickets are $15 at the
door.
For more information on
the July 14 performance, call
231-585-6360.
The 6th Annual June Jans Memorial
Concert will take place Sunday, July 15
at 5 PM at the Gaylord First
Congregational Church Parish Hall 218
W 2nd St, one block south of Main St
(M-32) at Otsego Ave (Old 27). This year
the featured act is “Nick & Rokko,” a
guitar, piano and vocals duo perform-
ing original songs and old favorites. You
will find their musical stylings com-
pelling and delightfully engaging.
Nick Talantis and Rokko Jans have
been performing together for over forty
years. They are both members of the
popular Traverse City band “Fresh
Fossils” as well as the nationally known
folk rock band “Ned” (of which Rolling
Stone magazine said, “they get in a
groove and stay there!”) This upcoming
concert will mark their debut as “Nick &
Rokko.”
Nick (guitar/vocals) is the chief pro-
ducer & engineer at My Dog Garage
Studios in TC, with many top albums to
his credit, and a sought-after guitarist
and singer in the Grand Traverse area.
Rokko (piano/vocals) is an award-win-
ning composer whose music has
appeared on Broadway, in films, and in
venues around the world.
The suggested donation for the con-
cert is $10 (though no one will be
turned away). As in previous years of
this concert series, all proceeds will go
to charity. This year’s recipients will be
the First Congregational Church and
northern Michigan’s environmental
education organization, Little Artshram.

Office on Aging Announces Launch of Needs Assessment
The State Office of Services to the Aging
(OSA) announced the launch of the Michigan
Aging and Disability Needs Assessment,
(MADNA) a statewide survey to help direct
future funding and planning for programs,
services, and public policies. Adults aged 50+,
as well as individuals with disabilities, are invit-
ed to complete the survey between now and
July 31, 2012.
“The Michigan Aging and Disability Needs
Assessment is such an invaluable tool in learn-
ing more about what Michigan residents want
and need,” said Kari Sederburg, OSA Director.
“It has been more than 25 years since the last
comprehensive assessment, so these survey
results will definitely offer a fresh perspective
on how the state and local communities can
best help people live with dignity and inde-
pendence.”
Results from the MADNA will be used to
inform leaders, policy makers and program
planners about individuals’ concerns and
needs on such topics as housing social sup-
port, health care, community services, and
transportation.
We encourage individuals to participate in
this survey, as well as spread the word to oth-
ers,” said Sederburg. “The more people we
hear from, the better our understanding about
what Michigan citizens are saying, and the bet-
ter able local communities can respond.”
The survey may be accessed by visiting
www.needsmichigan.com. You may also email
[email protected] or call (517) 348-
5972 with questions about other ways to com-
plete the survey, including options for those
with vision or hearing impairments. The sur-
vey will remain open until July 31, 2012, with
results available in September.
The Office of Services to the Aging is an
agency of the State of Michigan whose mission
is to provide leadership, innovation, advocacy,
and policy on behalf of Michigan’s older adults
and their caregivers. For more information
contact the Office of Services to the Aging at
(517) 373-9230 or visit www.michigan.gov/mis-
eniors.

Cheboygan - In conjunction with its bariatric
surgery weight loss program, McLaren
Northern Michigan is offering a free bariatric
surgery seminar in Cheboygan.
Because one size or procedure does not fit all
patients, several new weight loss options will
be the focus of the presentation, titled
“Bariatric Surgery and Obesity: What are my
choices?” The seminar will take place from 6 - 7
p.m. on Monday, July 16 at the Cheboygan
Public Library Community
Room, located at 100 S. Bailey
Street.
The benefits of bariatric
surgery far outweigh the risks
associated with obesity
including high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, diabetes,
osteoarthritis, and several
cancers. In fact, bariatric sur-
gery is the only significant
option that actually cures diabetes. Studies are
showing that bariatric surgery saves lives,
improves overall health and well-being, and
saves money.
The free seminar will include discussion on
the new surgical weight loss options available
through McLaren Northern Michigan, as well
as surgical qualifications and the multi-disci-
plinary approach solely focused on the best
outcome for each individual patient. Pre-regis-
tration is required. Register by
calling 800.248.6777 or on line
at northernhealth.org/CREG.

LOCAL NEWS
New stories updated daily on-line at www.weeklychoice.com
By Jim Akans
In honor of those serving in our
nation’s military and those who
serve our local communities as law
enforcement officers, firemen and
first responders, the Gaylord E-Free
Church will be holding a very spe-
cial service in the grandstand area at
the Otsego County Fairgrounds on
July 15th starting at 10 am. “Heroes
Sunday” is part of an eight-week
Courageous Event that E-Free
Church began on June 9th.
This celebration will be honoring
those in the armed services, first
responders, police, & firemen. The
call to Christians will be to follow
the Biblical mandates to accept
authority as God-ordained, and to
submit, respect, pray for and give
due honor. Those representing these
roles will be called to fulfill their godly duty to
oppose evil and stand for all that is good.
Organizers note that suggested dress for this
celebration is casual, “picnic attire,” though
those who serve in the military, police, fire or
first responder capacities are encourage to
wear their uniforms to the service. While there
will be no childcare offered during the service,
children are absolutely welcome to attend and
the service is expected to last a very child-
friendly 50 minutes.
A picnic will take place following the service
at the Fairgrounds at approximately 11:30 am,
with free hot dogs, brats, potato chips and ice
cream provided. There will also be an inflat-
able bounce house for the kids to enjoy during
the picnic.
Seating during the service will be in the
grandstands, though attendees are welcome to
bring lawn chairs or blankets and sit in the
grass in front of the grandstands. Those lawn
chairs and blankets will also be handy items to
have on hand during the picnic after the serv-
ice.
Parking will be in the Fairgrounds parking
area off Fairview Drive, and attendants will be
available to direct attendees to the designated
parking areas. In the event of rain the service
will be moved to the E-Free Church on M-32
just east of Gaylord. Please check the Gaylord
E-Free website, www.gaylordefree.org, their
Facebook page, or call (989) 732-2647 for
updates regarding weather factors for this
inspiring and
very special
“Heroes
Sunday”
service.
