GRAYLING – They did it
again!
The amazing racing duo of
Andy Triebold and Steve LaJoie
captured the grueling 120-mile
AuSable River Canoe Race for
the fifth straight time over the
weekend, proving again their
names belong among the elite
paddlers in all of North
America and probably the
world.
Triebold, 36, of Grayling and
LaJoie, 36, of Mirabel, Quebec
traveled the 120 miles between
Grayling and Oscoda in 14
hours, 42 minutes, 43 seconds,
a time remarkably similar to
last year’s winning time. The
race began at the Old AuSable
Canoe Livery in Grayling on
Saturday night at 9 and fin-
ished near noon on Sunday in
Oscoda.
The conditions for the race
this year and last year were
also remarkably similar with
very low water levels in some
parts of the river, especially in
the early portions of the race.
In spite of the low water levels,
Triebold and LaJoie were able
to navigate the waters and
maintain a lead from start to
finish.
The team of Josh Sheldon,
30, and Ryan Halstead, 25,
both of Grayling, was expected
to push the defending champs
this year and did so much of
the way. Sheldon and Halstead
stayed within contending dis-
tance for most of the draining
120 miles and finished as run-
ner-up in a time of 14:58:36.
The runner-up time was also
amazingly similar to 2011. Last
year, Ryan Halstead teamed
with brother Rodney to finish
in 14:58:32, just 4 seconds
faster than Sheldon and
Halstead’s finish this year.
Sheldon and then-partner
Steve Kolonich came in third in
2011 in 15:01:22.
As was the case a year ago,
the battle for the runner-up
spot was tight to the finish.
Steve Corlew, 31, of Grayling
and resilient Bill Torongo, 50,
of Roscommon came in third
in 15:05:23. The Cortland, NY
team of Mike Schlimmer, 25,
and brother Ben Schlimmer,
23, had another strong show-
ing, taking fourth in 15:12:05
with Matt Strieb, 48, of Bristol,
IN and Matt Meersman, 35, of
South Bend fifth in 15:13:32.
Nick Walton, 39, of Eaton
Rapids and Matt Rudnitsky, 25,
of East Rutherford, NY finished
sixth (15:22:28) with the
remarkable all-rookie
Canadian duo of Mathieu St.
Pierre, 25, of Shawinigan,
Quebec and Samuel Frigon, 16,
of St. Boniface, Quebec taking
seventh (15:23:52).
Jason Hatfield, 35, and Colin
Hunter, 31, of Grayling had
another strong showing, taking
eighth (15:33:31) with Masters
Champs Clark Kent, 52, of
Lapeer and Tim Sheldon, 47, of
Grayling taking ninth
(15:36:07). Brad Gross, 43, of
Pinconning and Matt Gabriel
Jr., 28, of Grayling captured
10th place overall (15:38:02)
with Ted Smutek, 44, of
Luzerne and Pete Mead, 31, of
Traverse City in 11th
(15:43:36).
Even Kryptonite couldn’t
prevent the “Super” duo of
Clark Kent and Tim Sheldon
from earning the 2012 Masters
title while securing their
notable top-10 finish.
The top Mixed team of 2012
was Marc Gillespie, 59, and
Holly Reynolds, 32, of
Rochester, NY, taking 16th
overall in 16:09:46 with the
mixed duo of Bruce Barton, 55,
and Rebecca Barton, 22, of
Homer close behind in 17th
place (16:14:12).
It was the Roscommon team
of Fred Mills, 58, and Tim
McClure, 53, winning the 2012
Seniors championship with
their 18th place finish in
16:15:13.
Mary Schlimmer, 21, and
Theresa Schlimmer, 19, of
Cortland, NY teamed to win
the 2012 Women’s title in
16:52:58, coming in 30th over-
all.
There were 71 teams that
participated in this year’s
AuSable race with 59 teams fin-
ishing. The last team to cross
the finish this year was also a
sentimental favorite among
longtime race fans. Hailey
McMahon, 21, a former
Grayling High School standout
athlete, took part in her first
marathon race and teamed
with racing legend Al Widing
Sr. of Mio. Widing, 87, complet-
ed his 40th marathon race in
18:32:27.
The hard-paddling team of Brad Gross, 43, of Pinconning and Matt Gabriel Jr., 28, of Grayling earned a top-10 fin-
ish this year.

These are scenes of pad-
dlers and spectators taken
on Thursday of last week at
Penrod's during the time
trials. The AuSable River
Canoe Marathon always
generates big crowds for
the time trials leading up to
the race and also for the all-
night race vigil during the
marathon race journey
from Grayling to Oscoda.
Among the photos is one of
sentimental favorites Hailey
McMahon, 21, of Grayling
and the legendary "Iron
Man" of the AuSable, 87-
year-old Al Widing of Mio.
Al is also seen resting with
his family after his time
trial ended that evening.

JOHANNESBURG -- As
Michigan’s black bear sea-
son approaches, the
Department of Natural
Resources reminds hunters
that the 2012 bear manage-
ment cooperator patches
are available from the
Michigan Bear Hunters
Association (MBHA).
Cooperator patches were
once given to successful
hunters at bear registra-
tion stations, where DNR
staff collect teeth and
other research data from
harvested bears. In 2008,
faced with limited
resources, the DNR part-
nered with the MBHA in
order to continue to pro-
vide the bear patch.
MBHA now designs and
produces the patches and
administers the patch
program, making the
patch available to all
interested parties. The
partnership continues
with MBHA donating
patch sale profits to the
DNR for use in bear edu-
cation and management
efforts.
In 2011, MBHA began a
contest for youth to
design the bear patch.
The winner of the 2012
patch design contest is
Trevor Simmonds from
Davison. Information on
how to participate in the
patch design contest can
be found on the DNR’s
bear website (www.michi-
gan .gov/bear) or the
MBHA website
(www.mibearhunters.org).
Youth hunters (17 and
under) can receive a free
patch by sending in a
copy of their current bear
hunting license. Other
hunters, collectors and
enthusiasts can purchase
patches for $5 each. It is
not necessary to harvest a
bear to purchase a patch.
Patches from previous years
(2009-2011) also will be
available until sold out.
Please specify the quantity
of each year’s patch when
ordering patches from mul-
tiple years.
Patches are available by
sending a check (made out
to “MBHA”), with a return
address, to:
MBHA Patch Program
10510 Fairgrieve Rd.
Johannesburg, MI 49751
For more information on
the patches visit MBHA’s
website at
www.mibearhunters.org or

GRAYLING – In 1994, the
two-person canoe team of
Serge Corbin of Quebec and
Solomon Carriere of
Saskatchewan did something
that may never be equaled.
The pair won the AuSable
River Canoe Marathon that
year in less than 14 minutes,
crossing the finish line in the
grueling 120-mile race in 13
hours, 58 minutes, 8 seconds.
Corbin, one of the fabled fig-
ures in the 64-year history of
the AuSable race, also has the
second-fastest time every
recorded, joining with partner
Jeff Kolka of Grayling for a win-
ning time of 14:04:05 in 1996.
That marked a streak of
eight straight AuSable victories
for the team of Corbin of
Kolka, which is yet another
record. Starting in 1977 when
he was paired with Claude
Corbin, Serge finished first in
the AuSable race a whopping
18 times! Half of those were
with Kolka, eight in a row from
1996-2003 and once more in
2005, Serge also won five times
with partner Brett Stockton of
Grayling, twice with Carriere
and twice with Claude Corbin.
The twosome of Andrew
Triebold of Grayling and Steve
Lajoie of Mirabel, Quebec has
now won five in a row and six
times since 2004. Triebold and
Lajoie also have the fourth-
fastest winning time ever
recorded, 14:09:06 in 2008. The
third-fastest time (14:08:18)
was generated by Corbin and
Kolka in 1999.
This year’s winning time by
Triebold and LaJoie and last
year’s winning time by the duo
are just a minute and 43 sec-
onds apart. In 2011, their win-
ning time was 14:41:00 and
this year it was 14:42:43. The
past two races have been con-
ducted with low water levels
which always adds time
because it creates more work
for the paddlers.
In 1947, Allen Carr and
Delbert Case of Grayling won
the first-ever AuSable race in a
21 hours, 3 minutes. That is
still the slowest winning time
by a large margin. Bud and
Hugh Bissonette of Oscoda
captured the title in 1948,
breaking the 20-hour plateau
in the process (19:58:00).
In 1951, Jay Stephan and Ted
Engle of Grayling easily broke
the 18-hour plateau, crusing to
first in 17:36:55. In 1956, it was
Ralph Sawyer and Tom
Gildersleeve of Oscoda crack-
ing the 17-hour barrier for the
first time, finishing in 16:58:00.
In 1962, it was Sawyer teaming
with Ron Hohman of Oscoda
to win in less than 16 hours
(15:25:17) and the following
year, Hohman teamed with
Buzz Peterson of Minnesota to
establish a record winning
time of 15:09:04 that would
stand unchallenged for more
than a decade.
In 1974, Jerry and Jeff
Kellogg of Twin Lakes brought
the bar even lower, crossing
the finish line in 14 hours, 40
minutes, 9 seconds. Since
then, most winning teams
have recorded a time in the
14s, with a few exceptions.
Here is a list of all the
AuSable River Canoe
Marathon champions.

LANSING -- There have
been numerous fish kills
recently reported from
around the state, and staff
from the Michigan
Department of Natural
Resources' Fisheries Division
is tracking and monitoring
these events.
"We appreciate the public
letting us know where they
are seeing unusual fish kill
events," said Jim Dexter,
Fisheries Division chief.
"This can be done by email-
ing reports to DNR-FISH-
Report-Fish-Kills@michi-
gan.gov."
The combination of very
high water temperatures and
drought flow conditions have
made conditions very stress-
ful for fish and, in many
cases, these conditions are
beyond lethal temperatures
for fish. Additionally, high
water temperatures also
often result in low oxygen
values, particularly where
there is a lot of vegetation.
"For example, water tem-
peratures of nearly 90
degrees Fahrenheit were
recorded in the lower
Shiawassee River last week,
which resulted in a small kill
of northern pike as tempera-
tures were beyond their
physiological ability to han-
dle these conditions,"
explained Gary Whelan, DNR
fish production manager.
"We expect to see more of
these fish kills until there are
major changes in this sum-
mer's weather."
The overall fisheries effects
of such events are often very
local in nature and may not
significantly change overall
population numbers.
However, population level
effects are not known at this
time and will take some time
to fully evaluate.
"We recommend anglers
be extra careful in handling
and unhooking fish that are
to be released to keep stress
to a minimum. It is also best
for our fish if anglers refrain
from fishing during the
hottest parts of the day and
not keep fish to be released
in live wells for very long,"
continued Whelan. "Fishing
in the early morning period
is least stressful for fish, as it
has the coolest water tem-
peratures."

LANSING -- The
Department of Natural
Resources will offer a total of
708,650 antlerless deer
licenses for the upcoming
season after the Natural
Resources Commission
(NRC) adopted quotas at its
regular monthly meeting last
Thursday at Harsens Island.
The NRC approved a total
of 70,750 public-land antler-
less deer licenses and a total
of 637,900 private-land
antlerless deer licenses. The
changes result in a decrease
of 47,550 licenses from 2011.
The quotas represent an
increase of 450 private-land
licenses and an increase of
1,900 public-land licenses
available in the Upper
Peninsula. Deer numbers in
the region are continuing a
short-term increasing trend
following mild conditions
for three straight winters.
The department recom-
mended increased quotas to
provide additional recre-
ational opportunity, not to
reduce deer numbers in the
areas where licenses were
added.
In the northern Lower
Peninsula, the number of
private-land licenses avail-
able has been decreased by
23,500, while public-land
licenses have been
decreased by 1,300. Recent
trends in deer populations
have been variable across
the region, but the decreases
are primarily intended to
match quotas more closely
with past demand for antler-
less licenses. Though this
means fewer leftover licens-
es ultimately may be avail-
able in the region, all north-
ern Lower Peninsula deer
management units (DMU)
will offer at least some
licenses this year. Six DMUs
in the region did not offer
any antlerless licenses in
2011.
In the southern Lower
Peninsula, 4,150 fewer pri-
vate-land antlerless licenses
will be available in 2012, and
the total public-land quota
was decreased by 2,350.
Deer populations remain
above goal throughout
much of the region, though
numbers do appear to be
approaching desired levels
in some areas.
"Although antlerless
license quotas were reduced
overall this year, we still had
the opportunity to give
hunters ample chances to
take antlerless deer across
the state," said DNR Deer
and Elk Program Leader
Brent Rudolph. "Interest in
seeing more bucks and big-
ger bucks is increasing
among Michigan hunters, so
we encourage those individ-
uals to pass a buck and har-
vest a doe instead."
Additional information
regarding deer hunting regu-
lations, results of the 2011
deer harvest survey and
Michigan's deer manage-
ment plan are available at

THURSDAY: 2 Timothy 2:1 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 2 You therefore, my son, be
strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
FRIDAY: Romans 12:16 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 16 Be of the same mind toward
one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in
your own estimation.
SATURDAY: Joshua 1:7-10 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 7 Only be strong and very
courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant command-
ed you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wher-
ever you go. 8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is
written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have suc-
cess. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dis-
mayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
SUNDAY: 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 13 Be on the alert, stand
firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
MONDAY: 1 Peter 3:8-11 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 8 To sum up, all of you be har-
monious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; 9 not returning evil
for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very
purpose that you might inherit a blessing. 10 For, “ The one who desires life, to love and
see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. 11 “ He
must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it.
TUESDAY: Colossians 3:12-15 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 12 So, as those who have
been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever
has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14
Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 Let the peace
of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be
thankful.
WEDNESDAY: 1 Chronicles 19:13 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 13 Be strong, and let
us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God;
and may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”

Recently I went with my kids to see the new Spiderman movie. Before my son goes back to college we will
no doubt go to see the new Batman movie as well. Frankly, these aren't my favorite type of movies but I did
actually stay awake through Spiderman. That is quite the accomplishment for me. Typically, I never make
it through any movie I watch at the cinema without falling asleep. I actually do real well at staying awake
until the popcorn runs out (to be honest, the popcorn is the main reason I go to the movies) but once the
last kernel has been popped into my mouth, I usually am asleep within minutes.
Spiderman - Superman...those are really cool superheroes. After all they can be more powerful than a
locomotive; they can climb buildings like a spider and leap tall buildings in a single bound; they can shoot
webs from their wrists and swings from building to building; they can even stop speeding bullets with their
hands. WOW! No wonder they are superheroes.
Even though super heroes like Spiderman, Batman and Superman only exist today in the movies and in
the colorful pages of comic books, the truth is that super heroes really do exist today. They don’t have the
qualities like described above but the qualities they do have are even more remarkable. Some of these super
heroes put themselves in harm’s way as they defend our freedom in the military. Other super heroes keep
us safe through their daily service to our community through law enforcement. Still others rush into burn-
ing buildings to rescue people who are trapped and are the first to bring medical help in dangerous situa-
tions. There is no question that these are super heroes!
But there is another quality of a modern day super hero. That's the person who is willing to admit when
they have made a mistake, humble themselves and apologize, asking for forgiveness. That takes guts! That
takes boldness! That takes a superhero in my book! And on the flip-side, real super heroes today are those
who know how to forgive and are willing give forgiveness to those who have wronged them. The Bible says
it this way,
“Be king to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another just as God in Christ Jesus has forgiven
you!” (Ephesians 4:32)
Look up in the air, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's...
Are you a Superhero?

This is a real charmer. Nestled in the wooded
splendor of the Michaywe’ “resort-style” commu-
nity located just a few miles south of Gaylord, this
weeks feature home offers luxury, quality design
and construction…and a prime location is the
icing on the cake.
The home offers a total living area of approxi-
mately 3,000 square feet, with 1,560 square feet on
the main level and the remainder in the wonder-
fully finished basement. The floor plan is open
and versatile, with generously sized room layouts
that includes three bedrooms, two baths, main
level laundry, a spacious great room plus a huge
family room that is located on the lower level.
What are especially impressive here are the
extensive and gorgeous amenities. Those include
the warmth of wood flooring in the great room,
dining, kitchen, entry and main hall. The great
room also features a beautiful corner fireplace,
vaulted ceiling and a spectacular view of the out-
door setting. The kitchen features many gourmet
level upgrades, including top-notch appliances,
elegant cabinetry, and a wrap-around island with
convenient snack bar area. The inviting master
bath features a huge vanity area, jetted tub and
separate walk-in shower.
Outdoors, the setting features a mix of hard-
woods and pines that can be enjoyed from large
open deck. Of course, being located in Michaywe’
means easy access to the community clubhouse
with indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, hot tub,
Michaywe’ Inn the Woods restaurant, tennis
courts, The Pines Golf Course, cross country ski-
ing and more.
This custom-built dream home located in the
Michaywe’ community is listed at $176,500. Call

10 Summer
Moving
Tips
Compliments of Ed
Wohlfiel
Part 3 of 5
How to prepare for a
seamless transition
If you're moving this
summer, the busiest sea-
son for moving, you know
how daunting it can be.
But if you create a blue-
print for your move, the
transition from house to
house will go more
smoothly.
Here are 2 more of 10
things you can do to pre-
pare for a seamless transi-
tion.
5. Don’t fight with Fido.
Sometimes we forget that
all the packing and con-
stant in-and-out of visitors
is stressful for animals.
Consider checking your
pet into a daycare facility,
or setting up a time for a
friend to take them or
check them into petday
care. Don’t let your four-
legged best friends get lost
in the shuffle and remem-
ber to make day-of moving
arrangements.
6. Keep track of small
parts. Some items need to
be broken down into
pieces when moving, but
do you know what to do
with the small screws and
washers that you end up
with? Rather than tape
them to the furniture,
which can result in losing
them, put everything in a
baggie that is clearly
marked and sealed. Keep
all of the separate baggies
together in one box on
moving day and personal-
ly take it with you to your
new home.
