GRAYLING – It’s been a
long time coming but the
Grayling Vikings have finally
beaten the Gladiators of
Traverse City St. Francis.
After giving the Glads a hella-
cious battle while losing
heartbreakers the previous
two years, Grayling found a
way to win Friday on the
home field before an electri-
fied packed house.
Sophomore Scout Tobin,
who had a tremendous all-
around game, threw for one
touchdown out of the wide-
open wildcat formation and
ran two times out of the same
formation for 95 yards and
another score late in the con-
test as the Vikings prevailed
28-20.
The visiting Gladiators did
not go down without a fight.
They mounted a late drive
that brought them to the
Grayling 14-yard line with a
chance to possibly tie the
score in the final seconds but
Grayling senior safety Scott
Parkinson was in perfect
position to make an inter-
ception in the end zone on
the next-to-last play of the
game.
“This was a great win for
our team, our program, and
the Viking Nation,” said
Grayling head coach Tim
Sanchez, who came to
Grayling nine years with his
brother Ben Brock and, along
with Brock, brought an atti-
tude of physical and mental
toughness and discipline to
the program.
Brock served the first six
years as head coach before
moving on to accept an
administrative position at
Port Huron Northern.
Sanchez, who had been
defensive coordinator all
those years under his broth-
er, took over the head coach-
ing position and is now in his
third year at the helm. One
thing that made Friday’s win
over the Gladiators even
more special for Sanchez was
that Brock was there on the
sidelines to watch and cheer
everybody on.
Beating St. Francis, a
perennial gridiron state
power, was a huge hurdle for
Grayling to overcome. Under
Brock and Sanchez, the
Vikings have had great suc-
cess, making the playoffs
seven of nine seasons and
advancing to the district title
game three times and to the
regional championship game
once in 2005. But for all their
success, the Vikings were
never able to outscore St.
Francis.
That is, until Friday.
“We have spent nine years
trying to beat St. Francis, and
to get the victory is very satis-
fying,” Sanchez said. “This
was a complete team effort.
Our defense was phenome-
nal, our offense made plays
when we needed to, and our
scout team did a tremendous
job of getting us prepared for
this game. Every player on
this team, whether they
played every play, or didn’t
get a chance to play a snap,
contributed to this win and
will be a part of Grayling
football history forever.”
Grayling’s hard-earned win
snapped a long and some-
times painful nine-game los-
ing streak to the Gladiators,
who had been part of the
Lake Michigan Conference
until this season. The
Gladiators now play as an
independent.
Grayling pushed its record
to 4-0 with league foe Harbor
Springs (2-2, 1-1) next on the
docket this Friday, Sept. 21,
on the home field.
With the score tied at 14 in
the third quarter on Friday, it
was roaming, rampaging
Grayling linebacker Nick
Swiercz once again making
a huge play, recovering a
fumble in Gladiator turf.
The timely takeaway from
the opportunistic Swiercz,
who makes a habit of being
in the right place at the right
time, turned directly into
what would prove to be the
game-winning touchdown as
junior Kevin Harris took a
handoff from QB Jake
Swander and broke loose
around the left edge behind
the blow-em-out escort of
Luke Walesky and Nick
Smock. The versatile Harris,
known more for the thunder
in his right kicking foot than
the lightning in his legs,
turned the corner and
showed off his speed, outrac-
ing everyone to the end zone
for a 28-yard touchdown.
Harris added the PAT after
his own touchdown, giving
the Vikings a 21-14 advantage
on the scoreboard.
The Glads threatened to
score early in the fourth
quarter but the Vikings
stopped them short at the 2-
yard line. From there,
Grayling moved all the way
down into the St. Francis
red zone, chewing up valu-
able time on the clock.
The big play in the drive
was supplied by Tobin out of
the wildcat formation. The
sophomore, who is already
proving to be a big-time play-
maker in the high-powered
Sanchez Spread, had thrown
to Swander for a 5-yard TD in
the first half out of the forma-
tion. This time, Scout took
the snap and scooted 58
yards to bring the Vikings
from the shadow of their own
goal line into St. Francis terri-
tory.
Thunder Foot Harris had a
chance to add to the Viking
lead with a 30-yard field goal
but the boot went just wide,
leaving the score at 21-14.
St. Francis showed tons of
grit on its ensuing posses-
sion, moving the ball down
the field with determination
and finally scoring when full-
back Jake Khoury busted in
from 15 yards. The Glads
missed the critical extra
point, however, leaving
Grayling
with a
slim 21-20
lead with
less than
three minutes
to go.
After senior Ty
Jensen of Grayling
recovered the
attempted on-side
kick, Sanchez opted not
to sit on the ball and try to
run out the clock, instead
moving the ball aggressively
down the field. The strategy
worked as Swander handed
the ball off to the hard-driv-

ing Jensen time after time,
moving the chains and keep-
ing the game clock winding
down.
The drive ended with 43
seconds to play when Tobin
took his third snap of the
game out of the wildcat and
once again made a big play,
racing between the blocks of
“Concrete” Charlie Brown
and Walesky and breaking
free for a 34-yard tally.
Harris’s boot made the score
28-20.
St. Francis again attempt-
ed to rally in the final sec-
onds and very nearly did so.
The Glads moved the ball
down into the red zone in the
final seconds and had one or
two chances to pass the ball
into the end zone from the
15-yard line. The scenario
was eerily reminiscent of two
years ago when the Glads
marched the length of the
field and scored on the final
play of the game to beat
Grayling 38-35.
The savvy Parkinson,
another senior and three-
year starter for Sanchez, said
“Not
This Time” to the
Gladiators, making a leaping
interception in the end zone
to finally seal the deal for the
Vikings in the wild, back-
and-forth battle.
Jensen, who has been reli-
able as the sunrise so far this
season, was the workhorse in
the backfield once again,
amassing 68 yards in 17 car-
ries, most of them coming
late in the game with the
Vikings nursing the lead.
Jensen also scored a first-half
touchdown.
Tobin had two carries for
95 yards and the late 34-yard
score and Harris had two car-
ries for 28 yards and the
game-winning touchdown in
the third quarter.
Swander, showing remark-
able poise in the high-stake
contest, hit on 18-of-42 aeri-
als for 231 yards while bat-
tling fierce Gladiator pres-
sure in the pocket on many of
his throws. Swander was also
on the receiving end of
Tobin’s TD toss in the first
half.
Glue-fingered junior Tyler
McClanahan pulled in six
passes for a team-high 82
yards receiving. Parkinson
pulled down three for 52
yards, Tobin three for 32
yards and Jensen three for 29
yards. Tight end Justice
Juntilla also made a clutch
grab for 22 yards.
On the defensive side, it
was senior inside linebacker
“Wild” Wes Dean once again
taming opposing ball carriers
with concussive fury, making
a team-high 14 tackles. The
versatile Harris had a big
game for O’Connell’s
Carnivores as well, making 11
stops. Jeff Myers made 11
takedowns also and booming
Brandon Handrich put the
dreaded B.H. tattoo on 10
enemy ball carriers.
Senior Scott parkinson goes high to pull in a reception from slinging Jake Swander in
the first half Friday.
Sturdy junior luke Walesky, right, stems the tide Friday as part of Tunney’s Green
Giants up front.
The Grayling defense puts the SmaSH in smash-mouth football as the Vikings
surround a Gladiator ball carrier.

Petoskey has tough time moving the ball against
swarming Trojan defense; Northmen fall to 2-2 and
1-2 in the Big North
By Mike Dunn
TRAVERSE CITY – It was a
tough night for Petoskey
against a very tough oppo-
nent. The Northmen were
not able to generate an effec-
tive ground game for the sec-
ond game in a row and, for
the second straight time, suf-
fered a loss to a Big North
Conference foe.
After losing to Cadillac 44-
14 in the rain the week
before, the Northmen of
coach Kerry VanOrman trav-
eled to Thirlby Field on
Friday to take on Traverse
City Central and were beaten
by a 40-0 margin.
The Northmen slipped to
2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big
North and face another very
tough opponent this coming
Friday, Sept. 21, when surg-
ing Cheboygan comes to
town. The Chiefs of coach
Jack Coon have shown the
ability to score points on
quick strikes as they have
pushed their record to 3-1.
They are coming off a 55-27
shootout victory over
Ludington.
Petoskey will be seeking to
get its ground game, the
meat-and-potatoes of the
offense, on track against the
Chiefs.
The Northmen were not
able to sustain drives against
the swarming Trojans on
Friday, with the exception of
a drive in the first quarter
and one in the fourth quarter
that brought them into
Central territory.
Petoskey pushed inside the
Trojan 30-yard line in the first
quarter as Quinn Ameel engi-
neered a drive featuring the
strong strides of Nick Strobel
and blasts of Kurt Boucher.
The drive fizzled, however,
and the Northmen struggled
to move the chains on subse-
quent possessions, putting a
lot of pressure on the
defense.
T.C. Central quarterback
T.J. Schepperly had a big
night running and throwing
and also on special teams,
accounting for five touch-
downs. Schepperly had TD
bursts of 25 and 35 yards as
signal caller and rushed for
151 yards and he also tossed
for two TDs, hitting Billy
Vermetten for a 22-yard
strike and T.J. Schwannecke
for 28 yards.
On top of that, Schepperly
returned a punt 50 yards for a
score. The elusive
Schwannecke also returned a
punt 74 yards for another
score as Central improved to
3-1 overall and 2-0 in the
league.
Petoskey generated just
120 net yards of offense.
Strobel struck for 36 yards in
12 tries and Boucher busted
for 29 yards in eight carries.
Petoskey will seek to return
to winning ways against
Cheboygan. Before losing the
past two weeks, Petoskey had
posted a remarkable 34-4
record in its previous 38 reg-
ular-season games under
VanOrman.
This Friday is also the
annual Pink Game for the
Northmen, a fundraiser for
cancer research. In recogni-
tion of that, the Northmen
will be wearing pink jerseys
during the game.

CENTRAL LAKE – Visiting
Mancelona pushed its record
to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Ski
Valley South with a 45-6 deci-
sion at Central Lake on
Friday, but the Ironmen had
to shake off a sluggish first
half.
“We didn’t play very well in
the first half,” said longtime
Mancelona coach Dan “Boo”
Derrer. “It was only 6-6 after
the first quarter and 22-6 at
the half. We came out really
flat.”
The Ironmen, who won
their 21st straight regular-
season game and their 18th
straight league game, lacked
the crispness and punch of
their previous outings
through most of the first two
quarters.
After going on top 6-0 with
the first of speed-burning
senior Wyatt Derrer’s four
touchdowns in the contest,
the Ironmen went on cruise
control for a while. The
inspired Trojans got the
home fans stomping and
cheering when QB Ty
Hiltunen connected with Will
Brockman out of the back-
field for a 25-yard score later
in the opening quarter to
forge a 6-6 tie.
After another Derrer TD
burst, this time of 36 yards,
and a two-point conversion
scramble from savvy senior
QB Kyle Schepperley put
Mancelona on top 14-6, the
Trojans responded with
another long drive of their
own, moving the ball into the
red zone behind the running
of Brockman and Taylor
Sutherland.
“They got down to the 15-
yard line and we held them
on fourth down,” Derrer
reported. “There wasn’t
much time left but we had
two timeouts and we moved
the ball down and scored on
the last play of the half.”
The drive featured power
sweeps to the short side with
Wyatt ramrodding his way
around the corner for posi-
tive yardage time after time
before going out of bounds to
preserve the clock. When
Wyatt wasn’t taking the ball
around the bend behind the
blocks of Dalton Sulz and
Dakota Orman, fullback
Logan Borst was launching
himself straight ahead on
middle traps behind the
plowing blocks of center
Tristen Fleet.
The Ironmen reached the
15-yard line with 15 seconds
left. Kyle Schepperley was
tackled short of the goal line
as time expired but there was
a holding call against the
Trojans and that gave the vis-
iting Ironmen one final
untimed play from the 5.
Schepperley called his own
number again, this time
striding into the end zone
with triple zeroes showing on
the clock. Wyatt ran in anoth-
er conversion and the score
was 22-6.
Mancelona closed the first
half out strong but coach
Derrer wasn’t happy with the
players’ overall listless per-
formance and “gave them a
butt chewing” at halftime.
“We came out and domi-
nated in the second half,”
Derrer said.
It started pretty quickly
when Wyatt accepted the
opening kickoff and went
coast-to-coast, racing 84
yards behind the key blocks
of Kenny Burnette, Eric
Wheeler and J.R. Cook,
among others.
On the ensuing kickoff, it
was Cook laying a concussive
hit on the Trojan returner
and separating him from the
ball and Tristan Waters mak-
ing the recovery.
A few plays later, Wyatt
made his fourth trip to the
end zone on a 9-yard burst
off-tackle and the score was
suddenly 38-6 after senior
Trevor Ackler tacked on the
two-point conversion.
Ackler also scored the final
TD of the night for the
Ironmen on a 9-yard counter
trap up the middle and jun-
ior Nick Balhorn added the
extra point kick.
For the game, Wyatt
whammed, wiggled and
whacked his way to 228 yards
rushing in 16 carries with TD
sprints of 54, 36 and 9 yards
in addition to his 84-yard
kickoff return. Ackler
amassed 50 yards in 10 tries
while Borst busted for 42
yards in nine attempts and
Schepperley strode to 34
yards on five tries.
Derrer was particularly
pleased with the play of spe-
cial teams on Friday and
noted the effort of Cook,
Waters, Burnette, Wheeler,
Balhorn and others.
“Last year we were so bad
on kick returns and this year
we’re covering kicks about as
well as we’ve done since I’ve
been here,” Derrer said.
“Almost all our special-team
kids are reserves and they let
it fly when they’re on the
field. They’ve done a great
job all year.”
Boo also noted the strong
defensive play of the Dark
Diesel, linebacker Dalton
Sulz, who flew to the football
like he was launched out of a
cannon and made several
tackles behind the line of
scrimmage, along with fellow
linebacker Luke Smigielski,
defensive end Brandon Scott
and safety Kyle Schepperley,
among others.
Next up for Mancelona is a
huge league showdown with
unbeaten Onaway. The
Cardinals (4-0, 2-0) are com-
ing off a hard-fought 31-20
victory at Gaylord St. Mary.
“They’ve got good speed
and their quarterback (Matt
Tollini) is a shifty kid who can
run and throw the ball really
well,” Derrer said. “They can
hurt you with the pass but
they’ll run at you out of the
power I with the Sigsby kid
and you have to watch for
that, too.”
Derrer said the key for
Mancelona will be to “try and
limit their big plays.”
“We need to contain their
fast kids and keep everything
in front of us,” he added. “We
have to make them earn their
points.”
Mancelona will be seeking
to keep its regular-season
and league winning streaks
alive and also win before a
large Homecoming crowd.

Cadillac 33, Gaylord 6
Frisch returns interception 90 yards for Gaylord’s
lone TD as offense struggles to move ball
By Mike Dunn
CADILLAC – Gaylord trav-
eled south to Cadillac on
Friday to take on the unbeat-
en and state-ranked Vikings,
dropping a 33-6 decision.
The Blue Devils could man-
age little offensively through-
out the contest but still bat-
tled hard from start to finish.
Gaylord slipped to 0-4 and
0-2 in the Big North with the
loss while Cadillac, coming
off a big win the week before
against Petoskey, improved
to 4-0 and 2-0. Next up for
the Blue Devils is a game at
home this Friday, Sept. 21,
against winless Alpena. The
Wildcats are coming off a 42-
0 loss to Traverse City West
and, like Gaylord, have strug-
gled getting the offense
untracked.
Gaylord has beaten Alpena
in five of the past six meet-
ings, including an 18-13 deci-
sion at Alpena last year.
The effort was there
against Cadillac but the
Vikings simply had too much
size, speed and talent on
both sides of the ball.
Gaylord hurt its cause early
with turnovers, leading to the
first two Viking touchdowns
of the game. Blue Devil sen-
ior safety Tyler Frisch gave
the Gaylord fans something
to cheer for, though, when he
intercepted a pass at his own
10-yard line and then out-
raced everyone to the end
zone to complete an electri-
fying 90-yard pick six.
Frisch’s interception return
is the longest in Gaylord
school history, beating the
87-yard pick and return by
John Sehl against T.C. Central
in 2000.
The Blue Devils put
together their longest drive
of the game in the opening
quarter, moving the ball
beyond the Cadillac 20-yard
line before being stopped on
downs. The big play in the
drive was a 62-yard comple-
tion from Frisch to speed-
burner Trae Hill. Fullback
Robb Hansen fought for 6
yards up the gut to move the
chains in the drive.
For the game, though,
Gaylord would accumulate
just 56 net yards rushing in
30 attempts, an average of 1.9
yards per carry. Much of that
total was due to Cadillac’s
ability to penetrate and stop
Gaylord plays before they
had a chance to get under
way. The Blue Devils sus-
tained 23 yards in losses and
were tackled behind the line
of scrimmage seven times.
Wingback Cotton Neff did-
n’t shrink back from the chal-
lenge, though, running hard
and earning a team-high 33
yards on nine tries, including
a 10-yard burst around end
behind the blocks of Andrew
Kalember, Zach Hayner and
tight end Michael Skerratt.
Hansen hammered out 16
yards in four carries while
Hill generated 7 yards in five
attempts and Trent Hunt
picked up seven yards in six
tries.
All in all, it was just a tough
night against a quality oppo-
nent. The Blue Devils were
not able to keep a sustained
drive going and, consequent-
ly, the defense was on the
field for considerable stretch-
es. Given that, the final score
of 33-6 isn’t as bad as it could
have been. If the Blue Devils
had folded the tents, the
Vikings would have scored
several long touchdowns
with all the weapons in their
arsenal and the score would
have been much more lop-
sided.
Jitterbugging Viking QB
Jalen Brooks, a serious threat
to go coast-to-coast on any
snap, amassed 116 yards in
10 carries with three touch-
downs on his stat line. Tyler
Derror had 87 yards in 17
tries with a TD and Nolan
Goerner rumbled 47 yards in
six tries with a TD.
On the same drive in which
Frisch made his interception,
leaping cornerback Leland
Huey made a sweet defensive
play near the goal line to
knock the ball away and pre-
vent a Cadillac touchdown.
Trevor Ruhlman-Raymond
made his presence felt on
special teams as he hunted
down Viking kick returners
and put some jarring jolt into
his tackles.
Blue Devils put up tough fight
andrew Kalember of Gaylord, left, battles for position with Cadillac lineman Kyle
lockhart in the first quarter.
Trent Hunt of Gaylord dives as he attempts to defend
this pass to Cadillac’s ben mackey on Friday.

FIFE LAKE –
Johannesburg-Lewi st on
returned to winning ways in
convincing fashion on
Friday, pushing, pounding
and propelling past host
Forest Area by a 60-8 margin
in a Ski Valley South clash.
The Cardinals of coach
John Bush improved to 2-2
overall and 1-1 in the league
as they returned to the posi-
tive side of the ledger after
back-to-back defeats at the
hands of Inland Lakes and
Mancelona.
J-L, fueled by the punish-
ing, leg-pumping forays of
fullback Mitch “Howitzer”
Hardy, halfbacks Dillon
Kibby, Jake Lawrence and
Cam Nickert and quarter-
back Alex Payne, led 26-0
after the first quarter and 48-
0 before halftime. The
Warriors tried but could not
contain the Cardinal stam-
pede.
The cannon-like Kibby,
who can smell the end zone,
scored four times for J-L. He
rushed 11 times for 44 yards
and scored on 2, 2 and 2
yards and he also returned a
kickoff 85 yards to paydirt.
For the game, “Krazy Legs”
Kibby amassed 283 return
yards.
He wasn’t the only one
doing damage, though.
Hardy launched himself to a
team-high 72 yards on 10
carries with a 3-yard TD
burst to his credit and he
also grabbed three passes
from Payne for another 46
yards of offense.
Lawrence locked in for 53
yards on 12 attempts with a
TD burst of 5 yards and a
two-point conversion run.
Payne pushed to 29 yards in
seven attempts with TDs of
10 and 6 yards and a conver-
sion run on his stat line.
Nickert collected 47 yards in
seven tries. Dillon Cushman,
Jake Newell and Coalton
Huff also helped the
Cardinals amass 256 yards in
53 carries for the contest.
Payne passed for another
92 yards, hitting Kibby out of
the backfield for 46 yards in
addition to the three aerials
strikes to Hardy.
Newell also helped the
cause defensively with a
safety midway through the
first quarter.
The hard-hitting Hardy
had an interception and
“Crusher” Cushman a fum-
ble recovery to contribute to
the defensive performance.
Brad Kussrow and Wyatt
Pelton had tackles for loss
along with Newell.
Coalton Huff put down six
Warrior ball carriers. Logan
Miller and Drake Skowronski
each had six as well.

On paper one wouldn’t
have thought Friday night’s
game between the Onaway
Cardinals and the St. Mary’s
Snowbirds was going to be
anything special. The home
Snowbird’s came in winless
(0-3 on the season), while the
always tough Cardinal’s
walked in undefeated (3-0 on
the season) looking to make
short work of the home team.
On paper it would have been
easy to just count out St.
Mary’s and give the win to
Onaway. Head coach of the
Snowbirds, Denny
Youngdyke obviously didn’t
care about what was on
paper, and cared more about
what happened on the field.
The win would eventually
end up going to Onaway by a
31-20 end score, but if you
just looked at the outcome
on paper you would have
missed one of heck of a
game. To say this game was
“chippy” would have been an
understatement. These two
teams just didn’t seem to like
each other from the get go as
they both came out of the
gates playing some hard
nosed physical
football.
The Cardinals got on the
scoreboard first with an early
touchdown by junior Noah
Bacon. Right when it started
to look like the game every-
one thought it was going to
be the shifty, Nick Harrington
was able to break free on a
couple of big runs and St.
Mary wide receiver, Matt
Spyhalski made a great
reception setting up first and
goal from the one yard line.
After a QB draw touchdown
was called back due to a
penalty, Harrington was able
to punch through the
defense for a TD.
At Halftime what was sup-
posed to be a blowout for
Onaway was a tight 15-8
score. The home team was
truly starting to believe that
they had a chance for the
huge upset, while the visiting
team realized that this was
not going to be another walk
in the park, and if they want-
ed to leave Gaylord with a
win under their belt they
were going to have to go out
in the second half and earn it.
It was hard not to feel the
excitement for both teams
when the second half started.
As expected coach
Youngdyke had his
Snowbirds fired up on the
opening defensive play as
Orion Beningo and Stephan
Hare came up with some big
tackles forcing the Cardinals
into a 3 and out. Then
when St. Mary got the ball
back on offense they simply
gave it to Nick Harrington
and he sprang loose for 33
yard touchdown making the
score 15-14 in favor of
Onaway. The home crowd
was going ballistic as every-
one realized that the upset
was now a possibility. Then
as St. Mary’s
assistant coach, Jeff Greif
begged his defense to come
up with a big stop to keep
momentum in their favor
junior linebacker, Cameron
Juneac intercepted Tollini
and bobbed and weaved for a
defensive TD.
Following a failed extra
point the Snowbirds were on
top 20-15. The home crowd
was now in an absolute fren-
zy, and the visiting crowd was
visibly in shock. This was
when senior captain Jason
Sigsby of Onaway showed his
leadership preaching that his
team not give up and keep on
fighting.
The Cardinals showed why
they were undefeated in
what was probably the
biggest drive of the game for
the Cardinals. QB Matt Tollini
lead his team down the field
in a truly methodical drive
that ended with Sigsby prac-
ticing what he preached by
breaking the goal line for a
huge TD for Onaway moving
the score to 23-20 in favor of
the visiting team.
This was the point where
the emotions of the game got
the best of both teams. With
every play meaning so much
it was only a matter of time
before the flags starting fly-
ing. Before you knew it the
field seemed to be temporar-
ily painted yellow, as flag
after flag was thrown on both
teams. In the next 5 minutes,
2 players would be ejected,
one assistant coach and an
unruly Cardinal fan. One
player who was not distract-
ed by all the debauchery that
was going on was Jason
Sigsby.
This workhorse needed to
put his team on his back with
his QB no longer in the game
and he was up to the chal-
lenge. He scored late in the
4th quarter locking up the
win for his team.
Both teams learned a lot
about themselves during this
game. The Snowbirds gained
incredible confidence com-
peting with the undefeated
Onaway team. The Onaway
team learned how to win a
game that’s close and showed
that they can come up with
big drives when the momen-
tum isn’t going there way.
Jason Sigsby had two touchdowns on the day, seen heremaking a one anded
reception that ended up with a short gain

CHARLEVOIX – The
Pellston volleyball team was
the cream of the Charlevoix
Invitational Tournament on
Saturday, posting a perfect 6-
0 record and dominating
play.
The hammering Hornets of
coach Brooke Goff pounded
out victories over Brimley 25-
15, 25-28, over Harbor
Springs 25-11, 25-21 and over
Elk Rapids 25-22, 25-21 in

the quarterfinals, host
Charlevoix 25-23, 21-25, 15-9
in the semifinals and then
Cheboygan 25-18, 25-13 in
the championship.
Outside hitter Mackenzie
Wright wreaked havoc up
front for the Hornets, whack-
ing a whopping 58 kills on
the day to go with 14 aces, 10
digs and three block kills.
It’s no secret that Victoria
“Rip City” Rybinski added
her own “ouch” to the arse-
nal, rapping out 34 kills with
three aces and two block
kills. Victoria was a vacuum
in the back row as well, mak-
ing 43 digs.
Abbie Welch kept loading
the cannons with more
artillery at the net, recording
89 assists along the way. She
also whacked 12 kills and had
three aces.
Tori Kirsch connected for
nine kills with four blocks
and she was a terror at the
stripe, notching a dozen aces.
Angular Emma Dunham
delivered 15 kills with five
blocks from the middle and
Kelly Lewis launched 12 kills
with six aces and 24 digs.
Libero Dana Zulski com-
mandeered the D.Z. Zone
with aplomb and alacrity,
recording 31 digs to go with
her four aces.
Pellston improved to 25-5-

CHEBOYGAN – This fig-
ured to be a big-numbers
showdown between two
high-powered offensive units
on Friday and that’s just what
it turned out to be.
Cheboygan outgunned visit-
ing Ludington 55-27 in a wild
affair in which the two teams
amassed close to 1,000 total
yards.
The visiting Orioles were
certainly good but
Cheboygan was even better.
The Chiefs chewed up the
turf big time as Nick Bevier,
Ben Pearson, Cass Ferguson
and Andrew Dixon delivered
time after time running
behind the gaping holes cre-
ated by Ian Elliott, Josh
McDill and company.
Bevier was a Beast, blast-
ing away with concussive
fury as he busted, bashed
and blew to a whopping 217
yards rushing in 13 carries.
“Petroleum” Pearson, the B.P.
factor in the Chiefs’ back-
field, was pretty slick with the
ball in his hands also, power-
ing, pounding and propelling
to 90 yards in 10 carries.
Bevier and Pearson each
scored twice.
They weren’t the only ones
doing the damage for the
Chiefs and Hall of Fame
coach Jack Coon, however.
Ferguson fired out for 74
yards in just five carries with
a TD and the determined
Dixon dashed and danced to
59 yards in nine carries with a
TD. Jeff Bursey of the Chiefs’
No. 2 offense was not content
to get out on the field and let
the thunder dissipate. Bursey
scored as well. For the game,
Cheboygan accumulated an
incredible 471 rushing yards
in 47 carries.
When he went to the air,
senior signal caller Damon
Proctor hit on six aerials for
another 112 yards of real
estate. Proctor hooked up
with glue-fingered Austin
Ginop for a 17-yard TD strike.
The versatile Ginop had a
productive night in another
way, booming seven PATs
through the uprights.
Senior Stan Swiderek
pulled in three passes from
Proctor for 52 yards.
Next up for the surging
Chiefs is a HUGE showdown
with perennial gridiron foe
Petoskey. Both sides want
this one badly. Petoskey
needs this one at home to
keep itself in a better position
to make the playoffs.
Cheboygan wants this one to
take one step closer to the
playoffs as an independent
and gain all those playoff
points.
On top of the usual rivalry
aspect, this is the annual
Petoskey Pink Game, a
fundraiser for cancer
research. The Northmen will
be wearing pink jerseys with
pink socks. No doubt, the sta-
dium will be filled to over-
flowing.
Petoskey has won five the
last six meetings between the
two schools. The last time
Cheboygan beat the
Northmen was a 22-15 victo-
ry in 2007 on the home field.
The last time Cheboygan
beat the Northmen in
Petoskey was a 28-0 shutout
in 2004.
Petoskey (2-2) is looking to
turn things around. The
Northmen are coming off
back-to-back lopsided loss-
es, including a 40-0 loss at
T.C. Central on Friday.
Pellston 31,
Rudyard 8
PELLSTON — The hungry
Hornets of first-year coach
Ben Schley keep on winning.
Pellston pushed its record to
4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Ski
Valley North on Friday with
an impressive 31-8 victory
over visiting Rudyard.
The Hornets are 4-0 for just
the second time in school
history. The 1995 team,
which posted a school-best
8-1 record, was also 4-0. If the
Hornets can win again this
coming Friday at the field of
the purple-clad and unbeat-
en Pickford Panthers, then
Pellston will be 5-0 in football
for the first time ever in
school history.
Pellston took care of busi-
ness in the usual way against
Rudyard, pounding the ball
between the tackles while
stampeding to 360 rushing
yards behind the helmet-
crunching, people-moving
blocks of Travis Matthews,
Alex Redmond and the B.K.
Boomer, Baylon Kerr, among
others.
Fullback Justin Price, who
is having a monster year for
the Hornets, pushed, pound-
ed, powered and propelled
his way to 144 yards worth of
real estate on 10 carries. He
was joined in triple-digit
rushing by fellow senior
“Nitro” Nick Nathan, who
amassed 120 yards on just
five carries. One of those car-
ries, though, was a school-
record 90-yard sprint to the
end zone!
Senior QB Austin Wright
wiggled and whammed his
way to 58 yards on seven tries
with a short TD run and
Austin Hamlin hammered to
23 yards rushing and a 7-yard
TD. Price pounded to a 5-
yard TD and Chase Woods
churned up the turf to add an
11-yard TD burst.
On the defensive side, line-
backer Kurtis Spencer was in
Kamikaze mode once again.
“Kamikaze Kurt” racked up a
whopping 20 tackles in the
game. Jared Reiman was all
over the place, too, making
18 stops, and Ron Hosking
racked up 10 tackles.
The opportunistic Hornet
defense recorded five more
takeaways in the game. Brent
Bennington and Tom Somers
each made fumble recoveries
along with Reiman while
Hamlin and Woods had
interceptions.
St. Ignace 58
Inland Lakes 6
INDIAN RIVER — It proved
to be a long, tough night for
scrappy-but-outmanned
Inland Lakes on the home
field Friday. The battling
Bulldogs of coach Stan
Schramm faced unbeaten St.
Igance, the fourth-ranked
team in Division 8, and suf-
fered a 58-6 defeat. [See pho-
tos from the game in this
issue.]
The short-handed
Bulldogs tried but the visiting
Saints simply had too much
depth and too much speed.
The Saints, who stampeded
to 368 yards of total offense,
improved to 4-0 overall and
2-0 in the Ski Valley North
while I-Lakes slipped to 1-3
and 0-2.
Fullback Shane Bacon
popped free on a middle trap
and scored the lone I-Lakes
touchdown of the night.
Hard-striding senior Cody
Bonilla blasted and bashed
to a team-high 79 yards on 13
tries and fellow senior Jodyn
Smeltzer smashed to 58 yards
in nine tries.
The Bulldogs will try to
right the ship this Friday
when they travel to the field
of Rudyard (0-4, 0-2) for
another Ski Valley North
clash. Rudyard is coming off
a 31-8 loss to unbeaten
Pellston.
JV
Mancelona 22
Central Lake 20
MANCELONA – This was a
wild one!
Halfback Chase Wilcox of
the Mancelona JV scored on
a 5-yard burst off-tackle with
5 seconds remaining to be
played to tie the score with
visiting Central Lake on
Thursday, Sept. 13. The
determined Wilcox then
whammed his way across the
goal line again for the two-
point conversion and a dra-
matic, thrilling 22-20 victory
for the young Ironmen of
coach Doug Derrer.
Wilcox’s TD run and con-
version capped an incredible
comeback. When Chase
Ritchie of Central Lake
scored with 39 seconds
showing on the clock to put
the Trojans ahead 20-14, it
looked like curtains for the
Ironmen.
But this is a determined
bunch. Glue-fingered Tyler
Fults fell on the Central Lake
squib kick at the Ironmen 30-
yard line with 35 seconds left.
From there, QB Cole
VanWagoner, Mancelona’s
super-charged V.W., made a
perfect toss to Fults for 33
yards to bring the ball all the
way to the Central Lake 37-
yard line with 25 seconds still
to go. Then VanWagoner
came through again, this
time finding long-armed
Logan Short down the side-
lines for another BIG play in
the amazing comeback. That
play covered 32 yards, bring-
ing the ball to the Trojan 5-
yard line with the clock still
running.
VanWagoner, cool as a
western gunslinger, then
handed the ball to Wilcox
and Chase churned up the
turf and powered his way
into the end zone for the
touchdown and then for the
two points.
But it still wasn’t over yet!
Incredibly, Central Lake got
the ball back with 2.5 sec-
onds to go and very nearly
scored!! The Trojans ran a
screen pass that broke open,
allowing them to move 35
yards all the way down to the
Ironmen 15-yard line before
being tackled with the game
clock expired.
Then everybody in the sta-
dium exhaled.
For the game, the wild run-
ning Wilcox couldn’t be
tamed by the Trojans as he
amassed 196 yards on 19 car-
ries and scored all three
Mancelona touchdowns.
VanWagoner ran 11 times for
29 yards and was supremely
effective when he went to the
air, completing both of his
passes for 65 yards on the
fateful comeback drive. Fults
found 23 yards of real estate
on nine tries and C.J. Short
shot out for 19 yards in six
carries.
On the defensive side, it
was the “Outlaw” Jessey
Janus rounding up Trojan
ball carriers like a cowboy
with a lasso. Jessey generated
eight tackles. Brandon
Willson put the wallop on
Trojans seven times while
Chris Nielson, Joey Wojtick
and C.J. Short each made five
stops.
Johannesburg-Lewiston 68

JOHANNESBURG – This
one didn’t pack a whole lot of
drama as the unbeaten
Johannesburg-Lewiston JV
squad did the super-charged
Smokevitch Tango, flexing its
collective muscles and con-
trolling play in the trenches
from the start en route to a
68-6 triumph over game-but-
outmanned Pellston on
Thursday, Sept. 13.
The score was 38-0 by the
end of the first quarter and
coach Joe Smokevitch used
his reserves from that point
on.
Nick May muscled and
mauled his way to 79 yards
rushing on six carries during
his time on the field with
three touchdowns to his
credit. Ethan May, the other
half of the Cardinals’ vaunted
“May Day Attack,” only car-
ried the ball once but found
his way to the end zone from
5 yards out.
Brandon Huff busted to 40
yards in seven tries and
returned an interception 38
yards for a pretty pick six.
“Lunch Truck” Logan Huff
barreled through twice for 16
yards with a 12-yard TD burst
on his stat line.
Fullback Jac Bandt was in
bowl-over mode as well as he
led the reserves with 32
grinding yards on 10 tough
carries, including a TD
plunge. Bandt also boomed
his way over for a pair of two-
point conversions and he
had an interception, too.
Dale Wells whacked and
whammed his way to 32
yards in five tries with a TD
and Cody Teceno smashed
and bashed to 26 yards in six
tries with a two-point con-
version run.
Tenacious Trevor
Pickelmann and dangerous
Dan Nieman also made the
scoreboard flutter with long
TD runs.
Pickelmann was a Vlasic
Vacuum on defense, blocking
a kick and recovering a fum-
ble. Zach Moss and Logan
Huff also recovered fumbles.
Nathan Fox was a fury, mak-
ing a team-high six tackles
and Joel Kussrow helped put
the “Ka-bam” into the
defense with six stops as well,
including two tackles for loss.
The Cardinals put their
unbeaten mark on the line
again this Thursday, Sept. 20,
against Central Lake in a Ski
Valley South clash.

The 2013 Chrysler Town & Country minivan moves into the new model year once

The 2013
Chrysler Town &
Country minivan
moves into the new
model year once
again as an innova-
tor not just in the
segment, but in the
entire automotive
industry. Already
imbued with inno-
vative technology,
unparalleled func-
tionality, classic
design, and a long
list of standard
convenience and
safety features, the
2013 Town &
Country has an
available Blu-Ray
dual-screen DVD
system, a first in
the industry.
Other improvements for 2013 include
sharper-resolution rear-seat DVD
screens for all models, a HDMI input for
video game systems, two rear-seat USB
ports for charging cell phones or MP3
players, standard Trailer Sway Damping
and standard power folding mirrors on
Limited and optional on Touring L mod-
els. The USB ports, Trailer Sway
Damping, and Blu-Ray DVD are new
additions to the growing list of innova-
tions the Chrysler minivans have
debuted since 1983.
The Chrysler Group invented the mod-
ern minivan in 1983 with the Dodge
Caravan and Plymouth Voyager. The first
luxury minivan, the Chrysler Town &
Country, debuted in 1989. Seventy-eight
minivan-first innovations and 13 million
minivan sales later, the company still
leads the way with the best, most inno-
vative vehicle to move people and things.
The 2013 Chrysler Town & Country

Page 10-B • Choice Publications ... The Best Choice! September 20, 2012
By Jim Akans
This week’s feature home is an outstanding,
beautifully updated ranch situated on an
impeccably landscaped site with just over 92
feet of “sugar sand” Lake Huron frontage.
Located about halfway between Cheboygan
and Rogers City, this three-bedroom, two-bath
home offers approximately 1,600 square feet of beautifully appoint-
ed living space. The nautical style décor, featuring natural wood
bead board and gingerbread trim accents, is reminiscent of interior
architecture that may be found in a Mackinac Island home. The
many recent updates include floor coverings, drywall, the kitchen
area, windows, roof, furnace and central air condition-
ing. Combine these wonderful amenities with a virtu-
ally maintenance free shake shingle vinyl exterior fin-
ish…this is a home to enjoy…not to work on!
With such a fabulous Lake Huron location theis is
certainly an awesome northern Michigan lifestyle to
enjoy. There are open decks on both the front and rear
of the home, and the grounds teem with beautiful
perennial flowers (not much maintenance here either!)
and of course the views, with breathtaking sunrises
over the lake and sights of occasional passing boats
and freighters, are superb beyond words.
Listed at $273,300…don’t miss the opportunity to
possibly make this very special home and location your
very own. Call Carol Steiger today for a private show-
ing. (231) 627-9991 or email

Values; if you're tired of
seeing tax values on you per-
sonal or investment proper-
ties drop year after year,
you're not alone. The good
news is you haven't actually
lost any money! Money or
value is only truly recogniza-
ble at time of the conveyance
of the property. If you can
and are willing to, keep hold-
ing on. Values of real estate
historically have had a hand-
ful of downturns or loss in
value, most recently due to
the lending/mortgage melt-
down. Historically... things
always bounce back and
believe it or not, real estate
will once again go up in
value.
If you can't continue pay-
ing towards your property or
are not willing to... the good
news is there are still options
in today's market.
Retail sale
Believe it or not, homes
are still selling. We continue
to see glimpses of market
recovery but contrary to
popular doom and gloom
homeowners through 08, 09,
10, and 2011 have continued
to be able to move their
properties. The rules of sell-
ing a house have not
changed; make sure the
home is clean, and price the
home aggressively to move.
The challenge with this solu-
tion is when a homeowner
has little or no equity and
can not cover the difference
in the form of a check at the
closing table.
Rent
For many, this is not the
correct solution. For others,
this is a great opportunity to
"buy" some time while the
market recovers. With rent
rates on the rise, the chance
of covering you personal
debt on properties is more
realistic then ever. The indi-
vidual looking at this option
needs to make sure they
have the time and patience
to be a landlord along with
the financial resources to
cover any "mishaps or mis-
communications" that can
occur when working with
tenants.
Continued Next Week.
