ments, but when it was complete, she heard members declare, “It’s good to be home!” Concern about the ecological dimensions of the Pinetree golf course led Jodoin to install a state-of-the-art irrigation system so that the course is self-sufficient, drawing from its own water supply. No potable water is used to water the course. The evidence of the success of this technology is in the verdant vistas and lush greens. In addition, Audubon Cooperative is incorporating a plan to use plants that will work in concert, protecting the course and wildlife habitats. Pinetree is a tournament golf course that welcomes championship events. Young players as well as pros will find risks and rewards on Pinetree’s walkable course. Barbara Jodoin remarks, “Whatever your skill level, you’ll be challenged.” Bergin successfully crafted Pinetree’s new layout to introduce innovation yet maintain its appeal to traditional golfers. Course Superintendent, Scott Slemp, affirms, “We attract the golf purist.” New and long standing members are enthusiastic about the improvements. Bill Grice has been a member of Pinetree since its inception, when Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead opened the course in 1959. “Bergin has done a great job. I love it right now,” Mr. Grice says. Newer member Monte Wood remarks, “The old course was good, but this is now one of the best courses in Georgia.” National Champion and Pinetree Club Champion, Mark Strickland, recently spent the day at Pinetree and remarked, “This has always been a good course, but now it is first class.” To learn more about Pinetree Country Club, visit www.pinetreecc.org or call General Manager, Barbara Jodoin, at 770-422-5902.

Architect Bill Bergin knew what would be essential to renovate Pinetree Country Club’s golf course. As a Georgia State Amateur champion and former golf professional, Bergin redesigned Pinetree with his passion for golf in mind. Pinetree has emerged as a classic golf course with 21stcentury technology. Bergin refashioned the layout, creating undulations that give players new challenges, without compromising the integrity of the original course. Pinetree now has ultra-dwarf Bermuda greens, all new tee boxes, and new waterside greens. Players experience a challenging and fun round of golf, and they also enjoy the sensation of a scenic respite. Located in Kennesaw, Georgia, Pinetree is a full-service family country club, offering aquatic and tennis amenities and a welcoming clubhouse. General Manager, Barbara Jodoin, has much to be proud of with the family feeling of Pinetree. Members patiently waited six months during the improvewww.west-cobber.com

Local Police Receive Public Safety Awards

s Sgt. Dane Freeman of
Southern Polytechnic State university (SPSu) was given an award of merit.

s Lt. Jeff Biddy, Cobb County
Fire & emergency Services, was given a medal of honor.

s officer Michael Carlson
of the Marietta Police Department was awarded a Medal of Valor.

The Cobb Chamber of Commerce honored Cobb County’s finest last month during the Chamber’s annual Public Safety Appreciation Breakfast at the Cobb Galleria Centre. The event kicked off a weeklong community effort to celebrate Public Safety Appreciation Week. The Cobb Chamber received 16 nominations for recognition of employees from public safety agencies throughout Cobb County, including police, fire, sheriff’s office, campus police, EMS and innovative programs. The Chamber presented a new award this year, the Distinguished Achievement Award, to Sergeant Dane Freeman of Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU). Freeman has been working in the public safety field for 26 years and has been an exemplary public safety servant. Never one to avoid new challenges or reject unpopular assignments, Freeman was tasked with establishing a new university Emergency Procedure Plan. Having limited resources and few models to help construct an effective university-specific plan, he personally constructed a plan on his own. After mock testing the plan and implementation, SPSU has been extremely pleased with its heightened sence of preparedness which protects students, faculty and staff. Freeman has positively influenced thousands of Cobb County and State Law Enforcement Officers. He is responsible for developing and submitting 16 of the 55 lesson plans currently used for the Basic Peace Officer Law Enforcement Training Curriculum in Georgia. Lieutenant Jeff Biddy of Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services was given an Award of Merit for his actions at a

softball game at Lost Mountain Park. In April, a 70-year-old man had been found unconscious on the ground not breathing and with no pulse. Despite being off-duty, Biddy quickly ran to the man and began preparing to administer CPR. Lieutenant Biddy instructed a bystander to get an automated external defibrillator from the concession stand while he and Amy Tipton, a registered nurse who was also in the bleachers that day, performed CPR on the victim. Lieutenant Biddy’s hands-on treatment that followed and the guidance he provided to others present made the difference between life and death for the patient. His decision to intervene and provide life-saving assistance had an enormous impact. A Medal of Valor was given to Officer Michael Carlson of the Marietta Police Department. In September 2007, Carlson was the first to respond to a call that a vehicle was traveling north on the southbound lanes on I-75. Carlson quickly got on I-75 south and he soon observed a vehicle traveling north straddling two lanes with its headlights on bright. With many innocent lives at risk it did not take long for Officer Carlson to realize that extreme measures were necessary in order to stop the driver. Putting his own life in danger, Carlson immediately activated his emergency equipment, slowed down and continued head-on with the oncoming vehicle. The vehicle took evasive action and moved to the emergency lanes. Officer Carlson countered the move by again positioning himself directly in front of the wrong way vehicle. This tactical move forced the driver to a stop, avoiding collision and saving people from certain harm.

Jessica’s new Future
medical environment and loved the fact that she could work in a safe, professional setting without needing a college degree. “I went to Kennesaw State University and I did okay, but I knew college wasn’t for me,” Jessica says. “I liked the fact that the dental assisting school was only ten weeks long, and we only had class once a week – on Saturdays.” Each Saturday, Waldron Dentistry hosts the current class of students and offers state-of-the art dental equipment for students’ lessons. From working on models to practicing with the dentists and fellow students, Jessica really enjoyed the hands-on learning. “It wasn’t boring,” she says, “it was a whole lot of fun!” Today, she’s just glad she completed her training with good instructors. In her new fast-paced job in a pediatric dental office in Austell, it was “sink or swim.” Jessica thinks she was offered the very first job she applied to because she was able to perform at a high level right away. In school, she had the chance to practice as much as she wanted, because students are invited to spend working days at Waldron Dentistry to fine-tune their skills by observing seasoned assistants and hygienists. “Nothing went to waste and today I use everything I learned in school,” says Jessica. It’s not surprising that her education was top-notch, since the dentists directing the Dental Staff School have a wealth of teaching experience. Dr. Waldron taught dental and medical training in the Navy, and Dr. Edward Schlissel came to Waldron Dentistry straight from a faculty position at the Dental School at Stony Brook in New York. (In fact, Dr. Schlissel was the Chairman of Restorative Dentistry.) Aside from the technical skills she perfected, such as taking x-rays and impressions, she points out that the most important thing she learned was how to make patients feel welcome and comfortable. “When I see I’ve made a child smile who was really scared, I know I did a great job!” Jessica’s new career couldn’t have come at a better time. After getting her first job, she and her boyfriend started making wedding plans, and they were just married last summer. She was thrilled when her office gave her a surprise wedding bonus, but she knows that the best part of her new job is the opportunity each day to help people. It’s worked out so well, she says it was “almost fate!” Dental Staff School (www.DentalStaffSchool.com) is a ten-week dental assisting school in Marietta, Georgia. Classes are held on Saturdays at Waldron Dentistry’s offices on Roswell Road in East Cobb (www.WaldronDentistry. com). Taught by Dr. Jon Waldron, Janet Waldron, and a team of experienced instructors, the program is affiliated with Chattahoochee Technical College. The school can be reached at (678) 907-7907. Photography by Ashley Waldron Hope (www.awaldron.zenfolio.com). Dr. Jon Waldron’s daughter, Ashley, is co-owner of Davis Waldron Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia (www.daviswaldron.com). Ashley can be reached at (404) 915-0799. Krysia Waldron, an organizational psychologist, is married to Dr. Blair Waldron.

p Janet Waldron & Jessica Demby
About 2 years ago, Jessica Demby was struggling. After graduating from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Jessica had tried college, but soon realized it wasn’t for her. Jessica did not know what to do and felt she had run out of options. All she knew was that living at home and making minimum wage was not what she wanted – not then or in the future – but she didn’t see a good way out. Thinking about her life at that time she exclaims, “I was just really frustrated!” Now, in less than two years she’s doubled her salary, has paid vacations and holidays, and is truly enjoying her work every day. What did she do? And more importantly, how did she do it? Luckily, Jessica’s mom, Janet Waldron, was offering a new opportunity for people like Jessica. With a successful career as a dental assistant and practice consultant, Janet knew that there were many people who would be interested in becoming professional dental assistants if they only had the opportunity. Little did she know that her own daughter would be one of her first students! The Dental Staff School, run by Janet and her husband, practicing dentist Dr. Jon Waldron, offers students the same great opportunity to build a career Jessica has enjoyed. In just ten weeks, students learn professional dental assisting in a real-office setting (the classes are held at Waldron Dentistry in East Cobb). Like many students, Jessica was attracted to the

Gobble Jog: A Great Thanksgiving Tradition
what would become the Gobble Jog. Told by the experts to expect 500 or so people in the first year, they were shocked when 1,400 people showed up to run a 5K. “I thought we could accomplish several great things at once, including feeding the homeless with the money raised,” said Amaden. “I knew MUST Ministries hosted a huge community dinner later that day. On such a food-oriented holiday, it all just seemed to fit – exercise and enjoy a guilt-free Thanksgiving Dinner, while giving to someone in need.” Since its first year, the Gobble Jog has grown to be one of the region’s leading races and the largest single special event fundraiser for MUST Ministries. This year’s event will mark the 6th annual Gobble Jog, which has blossomed into an authentic family holiday tradition! The race offers events for everyone - a 1K, 5K, 10K run/walk, a “tot trot” for kids 5 and under, and numerous volunteer opportunities. This year, race organizers are expecting more than 5,500 participants to join together on Thanksgiving Day, making the event the greatest ever! Make November 27 a day when you celebrate our national day of giving thanks by joining with your family, friends, and neighbors to help our neighbors in need! To learn more about the Gobble Jog and to find out how you can get involved visit www.gobblejog.org or call the Gobble Jog hotline at 678-218-4521. MUST Ministries is a faith-based organization that, for 37 years, has been dedicated to providing services to persons in crisis. MUST offers a range of services including emergency shelter, transitional housing, meals, groceries, clothing, job readiness and placement, financial assistance, children’s programs, community support groups and access to free healthcare.

p Lexie Amaden, Founder of Gobble Jog
As the sun rose on Historic Marietta Square Thanksgiving Day 2003, homeless and individuals living in poverty in Cobb and Cherokee Counties were given some new possibilities. Approximately 1,400 community members came together to support MUST Ministries at its first annual “Gobble Jog,” a family-friendly race and fundraiser. Founded by a group of compassionate, civic-minded individuals committed to “making a difference,” the Gobble Jog has quickly become a Thanksgiving Day tradition in Marietta, Cobb County, and throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area. West Cobber Alexis Amaden, owner and manager of Cobb County’s popular special events facility, the Whitlock Inn, came up with the idea to host a road race on the Marietta Square. Leading the charge in that first year, she asked a few of her friends to help plan, organize, and execute

West Cobb Mom Writes Book
Cherise Bopape likes to write for mothers of elementary and middle-school-aged children. She is involved in various facets of a women’s ministry, is an assistant coordinator for a ministry that serves single mothers, and teaches Sunday school to first and second graders at Noonday Baptist Church in Marietta. When she’s not playing Dominoes, Scrabble, or Monopoly with three young children, she’s providing therapeutic laughter, inspiration, and hope to other women who have not yet taken their own leaps of faith.

s Cherise Bopape
In the late 1990s through April 2000, Bill Cosby hosted the television show Kids Say the Darndest Things, based on Art Linkletter’s classic comedy show segment. Each episode celebrated just how funny, revealing and embarrassingly truthful children can be. It also stood as a sobering reminder that if you don’t want something repeated, don’t say or do it in front of your three-year-old. Yes, children have a wonderful way of making us laugh, usually when they aren’t trying to be funny. At the same time they have a unique knack for unintentionally cheering us up, teaching and inspiring us. West Cobb resident, Cherise L. Bopape shares such moments from her own parenting journey in Lessons from the Littlest: A Devotional for Mothers of Young Children. Through the 31 readings contained in the book, Cherise Bopape, a Kennesaw resident, encourages mothers to become aware of the godly lessons that they can glean from everyday interactions with their young children. The book is filled with true-life stories from her own experiences raising three small children, sharing how her children so often prompted her to stop, reflect on God’s goodness, or see life a bit differently. Each devotional ends with a challenge for either personal reflection or service. “I tend to make things complicated,” Cherise Bopape says. “By mimicking the innocence and faith of a child we please God. Through spilled milk, poop-filled diapers, and a slew of Little League games or cheerleading practices we can still praise God, be thankful, and give service with a smile. I had to learn this the hard way. . .But with the book written just for them, they can find something to take into their day while learning to see their little ones in a whole new light.”

West Cobb Student Wins Journalism Award
Katy Wood, 17, of Acworth was the recipient of the third annual ITT Award for Excellence in Student Water Journalism, in recognition of her exploration of the Southeastern water shortage in an article titled, “A Lack of Lakes: Georgia Water Crisis.” ITT Corporation, a global leader in water technology, created this award to recognize aspiring journalists and encourage them s Katy Wood to explore and report on water-related, environmental issues. Over the past two years, Georgia has struggled to adapt to the receding Lake Lanier, Atlanta’s primary water source. In response to its worst drought in recent history, the state mandated massive water restrictions and debated water rights with neighboring Florida and Alabama until the federal government mediated an interstate agreement in October of last year. Wood, a 2008 graduate of Wheeler High School’s Center for Advanced Studies, a science magnet school in Marietta, tackled this controversial issue and discussed the overall impact of the drought on local communities in her article. “Water consumption is growing twice as fast as the world population. We have a collective responsibility to protect and prepare our communities, as well as anticipating appropriate actions to deal with events such as the Southeast droughts,” said Gretchen McClain, president of ITT’s fluid technology business. “Each year this award encourages young people to play an active role in educating the public on the severity of these water issues and contributing to the dialogue that leads to solutions.” A panel of industry leaders and top environmental, science and water journalists assessed the contest entries and selected Wood’s article from a pool of articles submitted nationwide. The panel, including judges representing National Geographic, MSNBC, Scientific American and Water Environment & Technology, chose Wood’s article, which appeared in the Wheeler High School news magazine, The Catalyst, for its timeliness and national significance. “Katy Wood’s story speaks to an emerging water crisis that was almost a surprise when it arrived,” said Dennis Dimick, judge and executive editor of National Geographic magazine. “As populations in the Southeast keep growing, her story, and the challenges it presents, will only become more relevant.” As part of the award, Wood and her journalism faculty advisor, Sarah Wheatley, received a trip to Stockholm, Sweden, to attend and report from the 2008 Stockholm Water Symposium, which took place during World Water Week from August 17-23. Wood also receive a $1,000 scholarship from ITT, which she used to attend Duke University this fall.

Thanks for Giving 2008
Center for Family Resources Prepares for Largest Thanksgiving Food Distribution in Organization’s History
On October 21 and 22, The Center for Family Resources (CFR), in partnership with the Department of Children and Family Services (DFCS), began registering families for the largest Thanksgiving food distribution in the organization’s history. “We had record numbers on both days of sign-ups. Each morning when the staff arrived the lines were wrapped around the building. On Tuesday, over 700 tickets were given out by 11am and we had to close for the day soon after to save slots for Wednesday sign-ups. Wednesday was more of the same and we closed early as well and ended the day by signing up 1488 families. The case managers estimated that we probably turned away over 200 families once all of the slots were full. As we expected, the need is so much greater this year and we would not be able to tackle this enormous goal without your help,” observed Jennifer Cain, Development and Volunteer coordinator for CFR. In 2007, CFR provided Thanksgiving baskets to nearly 1,100 families. For more than 20 years, CFR and DFCS have partnered to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to families in need in Cobb County. This year, it will take nearly 55,000 food items to ensure every family served will receive everything they need for Thanksgiving. The coordination of Thanks for Giving 2008 would not be possible without the support of local individuals, schools, businesses and civic organizations. CFR relies entirely on these groups to make the Thanksgiving food distribution possible. Currently, there are food drives planned at 36 Cobb County and Marietta City schools and 34 businesses, civic organizations and colleges. Food collection barrels have been provided for each food drive participant. A special food drive drop-off event is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mansour Center (995 Roswell St NE, Marietta, GA 30060) and will include lunch and fun activities for youth. The first 100 individuals that bring five non-perishable food items (or 10 food items per family) will receive a free lunch, provided courtesy of J.D.’s Barbeque of Woodstock. The items can include canned fruit or vegetables, dried or canned potatoes, stuffing mix, non-refrigerated pie crust and canned pie fillings. Additional guests can purchase lunch for $3 per plate. A second food drop-off date is Monday, November 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cobb County Civic Center. Distribution of the food boxes to registered families will take place on Monday, November 24, and Tuesday, November 25, at the Cobb County Civic Center. Numerous one-to-two hour volunteer shifts are available to assist with the distribution. For more information on sponsorships, volunteering or hosting a food drive, contact Jennifer Cain at (770) 4282601 or via email at [email protected]. Since 1960, CFR has helped thousands of low-income families with employment, education, and housing services; leadership development programs; mentoring opportunities; and temporary financial and food assistance. Guided by organizational values of Family, Integrity, Results, Service and Teamwork, the staff at CFR is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by helping families acquire the resources they need to become independent and self-sufficient.

Happy Thanksgiving!
