What is a good teacher? I think that a good teacher is one who can manage a classroom and get the attention of the students by using their creativity and teaching methods. A good teacher provides the students with tools and empowers them to incorporate and process knowledge in a functional way, so they can use it in another context outside the classroom. Since he is not a subject separated from the society, he teaches his subject but also beliefs, attitudes towards life, values, etc. He pays attention to the student’s behaviour and monitors their performance to see if they are improving, and helps them get ahead if they are having trouble. He is there to support and guide them, but also allows students to develop their own ideas.
Why is the teacher in the movie a good teacher? I chose the movie School of Rock. First of all I have to say that this “teacher” is not actually a teacher but a musician who needs a job and takes the place of his brother to teach primary school students at a very prestigious school. He just wants to get some money and leave the place as soon as possible, but he realizes that the students can play music and decides to use them to make a band and take part in a band contest. This is why he ends up teaching them how to play rock music and to manage the whole band, leaving aside the school subjects. In spite of this strange situation, this “teacher” trusts his students and he always supports them and encourages them to believe in themselves, bringing up the best in each of them and highlighting their natural talents. I think that this is the most important part of his role and what the students appreciate the most, which is why they support him when his plan is revealed and the school authorities fire him. Each student gains confidence and get to believe in his or her own power to succeed. Some kids lacked confidence and it seemed that their parents were not very supportive, but thanks to the teacher’s support they become confident and even the parents and the school head realize that there is more to learn and to be taught at school than discipline and aptitude for study.
