WHAT YOU CAN DO
Questions?
The Engineering Council requires all registered engineers to undertake
and log CPD activities – but the amount and type of activities will be
personal to you. It’s about your development, and that depends on where
you are in your career and what you’re looking to achieve.

If you are in a Company where you have an annual appraisal and
development plan, then please upload that plan and log the activities
undertaken to meet those goals – that is all you have to do.
For those who are not in an environment with formal development plans
there are a number of different things that you can do, and probably are
already doing, that you can record and count as CPD. These include
anything that develops you, your skills, knowledge and experience, within
work, within the Institution, within your community or other areas of your
life. Everything from specialised technical training, management and
leadership skills, to discussions with peers, personal development and
informal, on-the-job learning should be logged.

There are no specific rules! We have tried to give you some ideas of the
sort of things you may consider doing in the table below, mapped against
the specific competences of UK-SPEC – some of which are things you can
do through the Institution, such as Chairing a Committee, or delivering an
evening lecture; but equally you may be doing things within your
community that serve the same purpose, such as being a school Governor,
or organising a fund raising event.
Your choice of activities, duration and quantity are whatever you feel are
necessary for you to achieve your development goals and some Case
Studies to provide more specific examples are available.
