WHO IS THE ACTOR? TEACHER’S AND STUDENTS’ ROLE.
In the human being history it is evident that education has been changing, as well as the role of each
one of the actors that involves this pedagogical practice. Since the beginning, it was believed that
teachers were the only actors who should be the responsible in the teaching process. They were who
prepared the class and gave the lessons which were led under the behaviorism. During many years,
this paradigm was guiding the education, but also it was followed by the grammar translation method.
It means, in the beginning students were not allowed to think because they were not considered
human beings. They were working under Skinner’s theory. In other words, students were seen as
empty boxes which should be filled and they responded to a stimulus as the rat did. At the same time,
grammar translation method was dominating educational context due to the fact that English was
taught just for translating from English into Spanish and no more. There was not opportunity for
students to practice communicative competence because it was not so important in that moment.
English was taught just for writing.
Along time, there were appearing new methods and approaches in the foreign language teaching.
Nowadays, there is a huge compilation of methods which are supported by theories and pedagogues
who pretend change the way to teach foreign languages. In the classroom context, the actors are the
teacher and students. Although each one of them have been in charge of certain duties, both share
the same responsibilities regarding teaching and learning. The teacher’s role is to prepare because
class, as well as encourage students to partake in the class development. Moreover, teacher must
allow participation in comfortable spaces where students share opinions without taking care of what
others could say. At the same time, students’ role is not attendance to class , but also to be conscious
about the duties that they have in the learning process such as partake in class, ask, help other
because among themselves, they construct their own knowledge, be respectful not only among them
but also with the teacher, and be responsible.
In that sense, students have to be aware of their own output in order to achieve all the goals
stablished at the beginning of the course. It is well known that sometimes students do not care about
it, for that reason, they fail some achievements or even the subject. One of the teacher’s role is to
help students to overcome the difficulties presented during the learning process. It is revealed in the
passing an exam process when they fail and must present a test again to pass the subject. This is the
case to mention that I prepared a test for those students who were at risk to fail the school year in
sixth course. I consider that students and teachers have to be together and point out to the same
objective to avoid casting off and keep students in schools giving them meaningful learning and the
opportunity to interact with others using the target language in communicative events.
