He s ays , “My fat he r s old a hous e of his for 20 De e naars s o t hat I could go for Hajj (and s t udy Is lam). Whe n I arrive d in Madinah, I we nt t o t he circle of Imam Maalik. He was s it t ing amongs t his s t ude nt s like a king. Pe ople would as k him que s t ions and he would ans we r. Whe n I e nt e re d t he crowd and my t urn came up I s aid, ‘Haddit hne e (re cit e t o me )!’ He s aid, ‘Rat he r you re ad.’ I s aid, ‘No, you haddit hne e !’ Imam Maalik s aid, ‘No you re ad!’ Whe n I t alke d back and argue d, he got angry and s aid t o anot he r s t ude nt , go wit h t his boy out s ide and s mack him 15 t ime s !’ That s t ude nt t ook me out s ide and s macke d me 15 t ime s wit h a s t ick and t he n brought me back t o Imam Maalik. I s aid, ‘you have Dhulm (wronge d) me ! My fat he r s old his hous e s o t hat I could come t o you and be honore d by lis t e ning t o your t e aching and s e e k knowle dge from you. And you s macke d me 15 t ime s wit hout any crime on my part , I s hall not forgive you!’ Imam Maalik t he n s aid, ‘What is t he e xpiat ion for t his Dhulm (wronging)?’ I s aid, ‘You have t o re cit e 15 hadit hs t o me , t hat is t he e xpiat ion.’ So Imam Maalik be gan re cit ing t he hadit h t o me unt il he comple t e d 15. How can one of us be t oo lazy t o pray 2 raka’at at night , whe n t he pe ople of t he Dunya s pe nd t he e nt ire night wat ching movie s , s ome of which t he y have t o re ad t he t rans lat ion on t he bot t om of t he s cre e n? How can we be t oo lazy t o re ad for 2 hours , whe n t he pe ople of t he Dunya – t hos e who jus t want more mone y t o cont inue t he ir s in – s pe nd days upon days of all-night e rs s t udying for t he ir e xams ? Why do we cringe at paying 6 dollars for an Is lamic book, whe n t he pe ople of t he Dunya s pe nd hundre ds , rat he r t hous ands in purs uit of t he ir s in? What ’s wrong? Some Fuqahaa’ s aid, “For ye ars I de s ire d t o e at Hare e s ah (a s we e t dis h) and I was n’t able t o be caus e it was only s old during clas s t ime .” Imam Su’bah s aid, “If I e ve r s aw s ome one running in t he s t re e t s of t he village I would only t hink one of t wo t hings : He was e it he r crazy or a s t ude nt of Hadit h!” And Ibn Al-Jowze e s aid, “I have n’t s e e n a flaw more s ad in t he communit y t han t hos e who s t op working e ve n t hough t he y have t he abilit y t o cont inue .” How do we corre ct t he s it uat ion de ar brot he rs and s is t e rs ?
