Moore announces investment in local recreation facilities
PORT MODDY –— The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, recently announced federal funding for three recreation centres in the TriCities. The Federal Government’s Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program is investing: ■ $300,000 to renew the Port Moody Civic Centre’s soccer field; ■ $889,911 to upgrade Port Coquitlam’s Hyde Creek Recreational Centre; and ■ $713,130 to replace the track at Coquitlam’s Percy Park Stadium. ―Most of us have had the chance to watch a friend or family member score their big goal on the Port Moody soccor field, at Percy Stadium or the Hyde Creek Rec Centre,‖ said Minister Moore. ―These facilities are an important part of our community activities. Renovating and upgrading the Port Moody Civic Centre, Percy Stadium and the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre will help our local athletes and sport leagues excel and ensure that our community has access to the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future.‖ With the RInC program investment the City of Port Moody will replace the artificial turf at the Civic Centre soccer field, and improve the overall safety of the site, creating up to 72 person months of employment. ―I would like to thank the federal government for the funding of our Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program Grant for the Artificial Turf Field Replacement Project,‖ said Mayor Joe Trasolini. ―There is no better reinvestment that can be made at any level of government than one that is for recreational activities for all ages.‖ The RInC investment in Port Coquitlam will allow the City to upgrade and repair the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre to allow the centre to support a wide range of community activities for years to come. In Coquitlam, the RInC investment will allow the City to replace the roof at Percy Park Stadium and upgrade the eight lane track, high jump and long jump areas of the Stadium. ―The roof and track replacement at Percy Perry Stadium enhances the newly expanded Town Centre Sport Complex as a first-class sports facility for our community and to attract world-class competitions and events,‖ said City of Coquitlam Mayor, Richard Stewart. The Recreational Infrastructure Canada RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a twoyear period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. RInC is part of Canada’s Economic ActionPlan, the Government of Canada’s multi-faceted stimulus plan that will ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. Conservatives Invest in Tri-Cities
PORT COQUITLAM — The Federal Government announced a joint investment of nearly $26 million through the Building Canada Fund and Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to get shovels in the ground on four local projects. These projects will benefit local residents by creating jobs, helping to boost the local the economy, and build longer-lasting local infrastructure. ―Our Conservative Government was elected to deal with the economy, and we are delivering on our commitment,‖ said the Hon. James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament for Port MoodyWestwood-Port Coquitlam. ―This investment demonstrate how the Federal Government is helping to strengthen B.C.’s economy, improve local infrastructure, and create jobs.‖ ―Scores of people are going to get back to work thanks to this investment,‖ said Port Moody – Coquitlam MLA Iain Black. ―We’re also going to see the benefits of these projects for years to come. It’s a win in the short term and a win in the long term as well. ‖ ―Our citizens continue to identify transportation as a top priority in our community,‖ says Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore. ―This partnership with the Federal and Provincial Governments is very important to Port Coquitlam as it acknowledges citizen demand for improved transportation networks and allows the City to complete this much needed infrastructure asset.‖ ―We are pleased to work with all levels of government to meet the increased transportation needs of our citizens,‖ said Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart. ―I thank both the Federal and Provincial governments for their contributions of $4.8 million dollars each towards two important Coquitlam transportation projects King Edward Avenue and Schoolhouse Street road improvements.‖ ―The Village of Anmore thanks the Federal and Provincial governments for their contributions for improvement of water quality and twinning of the existing main,‖ said Anmore Mayor Hal Weinberg. ―This infrastructure upgrade will enhance fire flow service to homes and the school, and the installation of radio-read metres will improve metre readings and invoice efficiency.‖ The combined Federal, Provincial and

Government Ends Sentence Discount for Multiple Murderers
Municipal funds for the projects are as follows:


$11,368,948 in Port Coquitlam to widen Broadway Street to five lanes between Kingsway and the Mary Hill Bypass, linking with the Coast Meridian Overpass. The reconfigured street will have two northbound and two southbound lanes with a two-way left turn centre lane. Both sides of the street will have sidewalks and dedicated cycling lanes. LED streetlights will be added, along with new traffic signals and bus stop bays. $7,400,000 in Coquitlam for the widening of King Edward Street to accommodate commuter cyclists in the curb lane. Side walks will be enhanced and underground utilities relocated to accommodate the widening. A portion of King Edward will also be raised to mitigate flooding problems. $7,200,000 in Coquitlam to reconstruct Schoolhouse Street from Lucille Star Drive to Lougheed Highway, utilizing light-weight fills to prevent future road settlement and associated drainage problems. As part of the road works, the existing underground utilities and street infrastructure will be replaced and driveways will be regraded. $535,286 in Anmore to improve water quality for their 1,900 residents. Twinning the existing main will upgrade capacity and fire flow service to homes and the school. The installation of radio-read metres will improve metre readings and invoice efficiency.



OTTAWA — The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Mr. Daniel Petit, M.P. for Charlesbourg-Haute-Saint-Charles and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice, announced new legislation to end sentence discounts for multiple murders. ―We cannot bring back those who have been so callously murdered nor repair the hearts of those who have lost loved ones to murder. But we can ensure that those who commit the most serious crime of all, taking a life, will pay a more appropriate price," said Minister Nicholson.

The Government of Canada's 2009 Economic Action Plan includes a vast array of initiatives to help stimulate the economy, create jobs, build consumer confidence, and assist Canadians during this global economic recession. New large-scale infrastructure programs are one important element of this plan. The projects are funded under the Province’s three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C. These will create an estimated 21,600 jobs in communities across British Columbia.

Canada Honours Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope
PORT COQUITLAM — The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, recently commemorated the national historic significance of Terry Fox with the unveiling of a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque. ―All Canadians are very proud of Terry Fox’s accomplishments and I am honoured to be commemorating him in his home town,‖ said Minister Moore. ―In the 29 years since his run ended, Terry Fox’s effort to raise both awareness and money in the fight against cancer continue to inspire Canadians and others around the world, and this has made him a true Canadian hero and icon. I am delighted to be here, with his family, to express my profound admiration for this inspiring young Canadian.‖ Terry Fox is recognized as a person of national historic significance for his outstanding feat of athleticism; his highly personal and inspirational humanitarian and philanthropic purpose; and as an enduring Canadian icon. A plaque was unveiled by Minister Moore along with Terry’s parents, Betty and Rolly Fox, family members and friends at Port Coquitlam City Hall, where Terry received his Order of Canada and in the community he called home. ―Our family is proud to know that Terry is being recognized with a plaque by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. The funding was made available as a result of a $365-million joint investment under an amendment to the Canada-British Columbia

Port Coquitlam Social Housing benefits from B.C. - Canada Partnership
PORT COQUITLAM — The Governments of Canada and British Columbia are investing more $800,000 in local social housing through a costshared Housing Renovation Partnership (HRP). Tamarak Terrace Apartments in Port Coquitlam will receive $800,000 to improve mechanical systems and energy efficiency. This funding is one of 81 projects province-wide which will create more than 1,100 jobs. ―Improving social housing is an ongoing priority for us,‖ says Port Moody-Coquitlam MLA Iain Black. ―We are meeting this aim and also creating jobs at a time when they are needed most.‖
