CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
An enrollment system is basically composed of procedures of verification and registration of student’s records. It facilitates the enrollment of freshmen, transferee, or students promoted to the next year level. It also provides storage of students’ records and access of student’s information. It can be used to track student’s standing and performance, and to update or browse billings or authorized contributions. Today, the Science and Technology Education Center – Science and Technology High School (STEC – STHS) is using a manual enrollment system wherein the teachers are the one who handle, process, and store the student records. STEC-STHS enrollment system is different from other public schools. Incoming freshmen undergo three-phase examination consisting of an Entrance Test, IQ Test, and the Multiple Intelligence Test. After succeeding the examinations, the students will automatically be enrolled. Every school year STEC-STHS will be advising students who do not pass the required 85% general average, to transfer to another school. The remaining students will automatically be enrolled to the next year level and assigned to different section. Though the stated enrollment system is complex, the procedures and tasks are performed by teacher manually. The creation of important school documents (such as

report card, school ID) are done manually. Processing of requests is done manually. But teachers use Microsoft Excel to record the grades of each student. The grades of students for each subject are kept by the respective subject teacher. During the release of report cards, each subject teacher will submit his or her grade sheet to the class adviser. Then the class adviser will write the grades on the each student’s report card. Students’ records are kept by the school registrar in files and in cabinets which take up space and resources. From the observations above, human intervention is involved in the current enrollment system of STEC – STHS. There is a lack of centralization of data. The system is highly prone to errors, redundancy, and loss of data. Also, requiring more time to handle and process requests. Computerization is a control system that manages processes in industrial workplace. It can reduce human errors and processing time. Thus it can boost the efficiency and productivity of a system. From the name itself, it uses computers to perform transactions and processes faster than that of the manual system. Computerization of the enrollment system of STEC – STHS lessens the workload of teachers and provides instant and accurate information. Hence, the teachers can devote more time on the development of student and will benefit the school as a whole.

1.2 Statement of the Objectives

This study aims to design a computerized enrollment system for STEC-STHS that will increase the efficiency and effectiveness, reduce errors and processing time, and will fit on the existing Information Technology infrastructure.

1.3 Statement of the Problem
This study focuses on study and design of a computerized enrollment system for STEC-STHS. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What is the existing I.T. Infrastructure available? 2. What are the processes and people involved in the current system? 3.

1.4 Scope and Limitations 1.5 Significance of the Study 1.6 Definition of Terms
